Is the Lucid Air the Most Efficient EV? What the EPA’s 2025 Data Says

The 2025 Lucid Air Pure RWD tops the EPA’s preliminary estimated-real-world ranking at 144.8 MPGe, while its 19-inch-wheel vehicle listing is rated at 146 combined MPGe.

For model year 2025, yes—by the EPA’s estimated real-world fuel-economy measure. The EPA’s 2026 Automotive Trends Report ranks the Lucid Air Pure RWD at 144.8 MPGe, the highest figure in its model-year 2025 table. That preliminary report estimate is not the same as the EPA vehicle listing’s rating: the Air Pure RWD with 19-inch wheels is listed at 146 combined MPGe.

What does “most efficient” mean here?

The claim needs a specific scope: the EPA report identifies the top vehicle for model year 2025 using its estimated real-world fuel-economy measure. It does not establish that the Lucid Air outranks every EV from newer model years available today.

MPGe means miles per gallon-equivalent. Because battery-electric vehicles do not burn gasoline, the EPA compares their energy use with the amount of electrical energy equivalent to a gallon of gasoline. MPGe is useful for comparing energy efficiency; it is not a promise of how far a particular car will travel in everyday driving.

Why are the EPA figures 144.8 and 146 MPGe?

They come from different EPA sources and rating bases. The 144.8 MPGe figure is the preliminary model-year 2025 estimate in the EPA’s 2026 Automotive Trends Report. The report cautions that its estimated real-world values differ from the fuel-economy label values provided at the time of sale.

The EPA ENERGY STAR vehicle listing gives the Air Pure RWD with 19-inch wheels a label-style rating of 146 combined MPGe. That listing also reports 420 miles of range and energy consumption of 23 kWh per 100 miles. Use 146 MPGe when referring to that specific vehicle listing, and 144.8 MPGe when describing the report’s model-year ranking.

How do 2025 Lucid Air configurations compare?

These EPA listing figures show why trim and wheel configuration matter. The Pure RWD’s 19- and 20-inch-wheel versions have different efficiency and range ratings.

2025 configuration Combined efficiency Range Electricity use
Air Pure RWD, 19-inch wheels 146 MPGe 420 miles 23 kWh/100 miles
Air Pure RWD, 20-inch wheels 129 MPGe 372 miles 26 kWh/100 miles
Air Touring AWD, 19-inch wheels 132 MPGe 406 miles Not stated in the cited EPA vehicle listing

The Pure RWD and Touring AWD rows share model year and wheel size, but differ in trim and drivetrain, so this is not a comparison that isolates one variable. MPGe measures comparative energy efficiency, range estimates distance between charges, and kWh/100 miles describes electricity consumption; they are related but not interchangeable.

Will the Air reach its listed range in everyday driving?

Not necessarily. Lucid says range and battery power vary with temperature, driving habits, charging, and battery condition, and that actual results vary. Treat the EPA range as a rating for the listed configuration, not a guaranteed trip distance. Cold or hot conditions and how the car is driven can affect the result.
