What happened to the Lotus Evija X at Goodwood?
The crash occurred during the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the Evija X was listed as a demonstration entry. New Atlas reported that the car struck the hay bales shortly after launching from the start line, sustaining visible front-end damage. Goodwood’s 2 July 2024 entry list identifies the car as “Lotus Evija X.”
Was the driver hurt?
New Atlas reported that the driver exited the car unhurt. The report said it did not have official confirmation of the driver’s identity, so the driver should not be named as established fact.
Why did the Lotus Evija X crash?
No confirmed technical cause is established in the available reporting. New Atlas suggested traction-control trouble as a guess and quoted Goodwood Festival of Speed commentator Harry Metcalfe saying, “this isn’t driver error.” The article also reported Metcalfe’s belief that the incident may have involved software. Those remarks are commentary, not an official finding that a software or traction-control fault caused the crash.

What is the Evija X?
Lotus describes the Evija X as a one-off track derivative of its all-electric Evija, rather than a standard customer-car configuration. Lotus’s UK Evija page states an output of 2,011 bhp for the Evija; that manufacturer figure does not establish the exact setup or behavior of the Evija X at Goodwood. The Nürburgring’s official record page lists the Evija X Hypercar at 6:24.047, set by Dirk Müller on 13 October 2023 in the prototypes/pre-production category. That is the car’s listed result in that category, not a current overall prototype record. The Nürburgring record table also lists other prototype times.
