Waymo began gradually welcoming riders in Denver, Tampa and San Diego on September 1, 2026. The announcement does not mean that everyone can book a ride immediately: prospective riders should download the Waymo app and wait for a notification that it is their turn.
Which cities are included?
Waymo’s September 1 announcement names Denver, Tampa and San Diego. The company described the rollout as gradual, not as an immediate opening to all riders. Its notice says, “We’re gradually welcoming riders in three new cities: Denver, Tampa, and San Diego!” Waymo Help’s announcement gives no date by which onboarding will be complete.
How to try a Waymo ride in these cities
- Download the Waymo app.
- Wait for Waymo to notify you when it is your turn to ride.
The announcement does not give an individual wait time or explain how many riders have already been admitted. Downloading the app is the stated next step, not a guarantee of immediate access.
Check whether your trip is within the service area
A city appearing in Waymo’s list of places where it is driving does not establish that every neighborhood, pickup point or destination is covered. Before planning a trip, check the current service-area map and availability information in Waymo’s city updates. The page distinguishes current operating locations from places listed as coming soon; a future-city listing is not evidence that rides are available there now.

What the announcement does not tell riders
- Fares: The September 1 notice does not state city-specific prices.
- Exact coverage: It does not provide a complete map of rideable streets or destinations.
- Rollout schedule: It does not say when access will open to all interested riders, or estimate an individual’s wait.
- Local approvals: It does not describe city-specific regulatory steps.
Waymo’s announcement archive shows the three-city notice on September 1, 2026, followed by a September 14 notice about gradually adding riders in Las Vegas. The archive also records that Houston opened to everyone on August 20. Those separate updates do not establish the access schedule for Denver, Tampa or San Diego.
