1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Lotus Emira is sold with two fundamentally different powertrains: a supercharged 3.5-litre V6 and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder supplied by Lotus’s technical partner AMG. The V6 can be paired with a six-speed manual or an automatic, while the four-cylinder uses an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Which Emira makes sense depends less on a headline 0–62 mph figure than on the exact model year, market, gearbox, equipment, service evidence and condition of the individual car.
Lotus trim names have changed since the 2021 launch. The 5 June 2025 announcement for the 2026 model range describes V6 SE, Turbo SE and Turbo, with Turbo as the entry point. Earlier V6 First Edition cars belong to the launch-era range, not automatically to a later SE specification. Always verify the VIN, build specification and original paperwork rather than relying on an advert’s trim label.

Lotus Emira engines and gearboxes
There are two engine families in Lotus’s published Emira material. The V6 is a 3,456 cc supercharged unit. The four-cylinder is a 1,991 cc turbocharged engine sourced from AMG. Their outputs, transmission choices and driving character are different enough that the engine decision should come before comparing cosmetic equipment, wheel designs or option packs.
| Powertrain | Transmission choices | Published Lotus figures | What to verify on the car |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5-litre (3,456 cc) supercharged V6 | Six-speed manual; Lotus also lists an automatic option | V6 SE: 400 hp and 0–62 mph in 4.3 seconds | Whether the specific market and VIN have the manual or automatic, plus the exact SE equipment |
| 2.0-litre (1,991 cc) turbocharged four-cylinder | Eight-speed dual-clutch transmission | Turbo: 360 bhp and 0–62 mph in 4.4 seconds; Turbo SE: 400 bhp and 0–62 mph in 4.0 seconds | Whether it is Turbo or Turbo SE, and which model year’s specification applies |
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent instrumented road-test results. Lotus uses both “hp” and “bhp” in the cited material, so keep the original unit and variant attached to every figure. A listing that quotes “400” without naming the engine and trim is incomplete. Do not assume that two cars with the same badge have identical software, equipment or market specification.

Choosing the V6
The V6 is the clearly differentiated choice if a manual gearbox is important to you. Confirm that the advertised car is genuinely manual and that the registration documents, VIN build sheet and photographs agree. Check the number and arrangement of pedals, the gear lever and the transmission description on the paperwork rather than accepting a casual advert caption. Lotus also lists an automatic V6, but availability can vary by market; do not assume every V6 listing can be ordered or serviced in the same configuration.
For a manual car, a cold start and a long enough drive to reach normal operating temperature are useful. The clutch should engage predictably, the gear lever should select every ratio and reverse without abnormal resistance, and there should be no unexplained warning message. Those checks do not establish a model-wide reliability rate; they simply help identify the condition of the particular car you are viewing.
Choosing the turbocharged four-cylinder
The four-cylinder is not one single performance specification. Lotus lists 360 bhp and 4.4 seconds for Turbo, and 400 bhp and 4.0 seconds for Turbo SE. Those figures make the trim and model year material to a comparison. Ask the seller for the factory specification, not simply a description such as “AMG engine”, “SE-style equipment” or “same as the latest car”.
The eight-speed dual-clutch transmission also deserves a specific test drive. Check smooth take-off, reverse selection, low-speed manoeuvring and operation when warm. A hesitant response may have several possible causes, so use it as a reason for a specialist inspection rather than attempting to diagnose an expensive repair from a short drive.
Emira trim and model-year chronology
2021 launch and V6 First Edition
Lotus introduced the Emira in 2021 around a V6 First Edition, with the turbocharged four-cylinder due later. A First Edition badge identifies the launch-era range; it does not establish that a car has the equipment or naming used by later cars. Historical launch information is useful for identifying an early example, but it should not be used as a current price guide or as proof that a later SE feature is fitted.
2025 revised range
In March 2025, Lotus described Turbo SE and V6 as the revised line-up replacing First Editions in its range description. Treat that announcement as chronology rather than a universal list of cars available in every country. A car registered in 2025 may have been built to a different specification from another car registered in the same calendar year, especially if it was imported or sold from existing stock.
2026 model range
Lotus’s 5 June 2025 announcement for the 2026 range describes three versions: V6 SE, Turbo SE and Turbo. It calls Turbo the entry point and says Racing Line design options will be offered on Turbo SE and V6 SE. “Entry point” refers to Lotus’s range positioning in that announcement, not a guaranteed local price or stock position. Confirm whether the seller’s country actually offered each version and whether the advertised car has the design option, rather than treating the name as standard equipment.

A trim name from one model year may not describe the same equipment in another. The VIN and original specification paperwork resolve questions about brakes, seats, wheels, audio, driver-assistance equipment and other options more reliably than a seller’s shorthand. If the seller cannot produce a build sheet, ask an authorised repairer whether the VIN can be decoded and request the answer in writing.
How Lotus’s published performance figures should be used
Use the figures to identify the configuration, not to predict the exact time your purchase will record on the road. Lotus publishes 360 bhp and 4.4 seconds from 0–62 mph for Emira Turbo, 400 bhp and 4.0 seconds for Turbo SE, and 400 hp and 4.3 seconds for the 2026 V6 SE. They are configuration-specific claims from Lotus. Tyres, fuel, weather, surface, equipment and test method can affect real-world results, and no independent measurement is established here.
For a fair shortlist, compare like with like: Turbo against Turbo, Turbo SE against Turbo SE, or V6 SE against V6 SE. Do not combine a Turbo SE acceleration figure with a base Turbo’s equipment or call a First Edition a current SE without evidence. Keep the units and the variant name whenever you copy a figure into notes, an advert comparison or a finance calculation.

1. Verify identity and specification
- Photograph the VIN and compare it with the registration document, service invoices and any build sheet.
- Ask the seller to state the model year, market, engine, transmission and trim in writing.
- Check that the wheels, seats, trim pieces and option packs match the factory specification for that VIN.
- For an imported car, confirm which market’s equipment, warranty and service terms apply.
- Check that the mileage on each invoice progresses logically and that the dates match the vehicle’s registration history.
- Ask whether any software changes, exhaust work, suspension changes or other modifications remain on the car, and request invoices for them.
Never let a finance illustration or a low advertised price substitute for identity checks. If the VIN is obscured, inconsistent or unavailable until payment, pause the transaction. A specialist can often identify mismatched panels, wheels or interior parts, but the factory record remains the best way to settle an equipment dispute.
2. Audit the service record
Request dated invoices rather than a stamped booklet alone. Compare the work shown with the maintenance schedule applicable to that vehicle and market. Lotus’s UK Emira Service Plan summary states that routine services are due every 10,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first. That interval is a guide to the documented UK plan, not proof that every market or used car has identical requirements.
A low-mileage car still needs time-based maintenance if the schedule requires annual attendance. Conversely, a car that has covered more than 10,000 miles since its last documented service may be overdue even if its annual date has not arrived. Look for evidence of consumables and inspection work, not just a date and a dealer stamp, and ask why any gap exists.
If a UK car is advertised with a service plan, ask Lotus or an authorised repairer to confirm how many services remain and whether the plan can transfer. The published summary says unused services can transfer subject to its process and a £25 administration fee. Confirm the current terms, transfer procedure and the car’s eligibility before assigning any value to the plan.

The same UK summary describes coverage of the first three routine services for qualifying new UK cars. It lists £1,599 including VAT for the V6 plan and £2,699 including VAT for the four-cylinder Turbo plan when purchased with a new car. Those are document-stated, time-sensitive prices and eligibility conditions, not a current quotation for every used Emira. A used buyer should obtain a fresh written statement of what remains rather than deducting the original plan price from the asking price.

3. Check recalls by VIN
Use the relevant national recall authority and contact Lotus or an authorised repairer with the VIN. A model name alone cannot prove that a recall applies, has been completed or is outstanding. Obtain written confirmation of the result and ask for invoices or campaign completion records where available. If the car has moved between countries, check both the current registration market and the market in which it was first sold.
4. Inspect tyres and wheels
Lotus lists 245/35 R20 tyres at the front and 295/30 R20 at the rear in its Emira model specification. Check the sidewalls and invoices against the actual wheels on the car. These dimensions do not establish a single tyre brand, compound, load rating or Lotus approval for every market and wheel setup.
- Measure tread and inspect both tyres on each axle.
- Look for shoulder wear, cracks, bulges, puncture repairs and damage from potholes.
- Check that the same approved specification is fitted across each axle where required.
- Inspect the inner shoulders, which can be missed during a quick walk-around.
- Ask a Lotus-qualified specialist to investigate uneven wear rather than treating a new pair of tyres as the complete fix.
- Before ordering replacements, confirm size, speed and load ratings, construction, approval marking and wheel compatibility for that VIN.
- Check wheel rims for bends, kerb damage and fresh paint that could conceal a repair.
Tyre dimensions are a supported starting point for a replacement search, not a recommendation for a particular brand. Ask a qualified supplier to verify the complete fitment and suitability for the actual wheels. Budget for four-corner condition, alignment and possible wheel repairs rather than looking only at the visible tread on the outside shoulder.

A Lotus-qualified specialist should inspect the individual car, especially when records are incomplete or the vehicle has been modified. Ask for a written report covering accident repairs, panel alignment, paint readings where appropriate, suspension and steering components, brakes, underbody damage, fluid leaks, warning lights, electrical functions, clutch or dual-clutch operation, and evidence that the odometer and service history are consistent.
Give the inspector the VIN and the seller’s specification before the appointment so discrepancies can be checked. If the report identifies work, obtain a written estimate and decide whether the seller will complete it, reduce the price or let you walk away. This is sensible buying practice; it is not evidence that any particular defect is common across the Emira range.
6. Test-drive the exact car
- Start the car from cold if possible and note warning lights, noises and idle quality.
- Check clutch take-up and gear selection on a manual V6; on the dual-clutch car, check smooth engagement, reverse selection and low-speed manoeuvring.
- On a safe, legal route, test straight-line braking, steering response and whether the car tracks straight.
- Listen for tyre, wheel or suspension noises over uneven surfaces.
- Confirm that air conditioning, infotainment, windows, mirrors, cameras, sensors and every warning display work.
- Try the controls in the order you would use them daily, including cold start, parking, reversing and joining a faster road.
- After the drive, inspect for fresh fluid leaks and recheck tyre pressures and temperatures where practical.
Do not perform an aggressive acceleration test on a public road simply to chase Lotus’s quoted 0–62 mph figure. The objective is to identify the condition and usability of the exact car, then have a specialist investigate anything abnormal.
Service, warranty and ownership questions to ask
Ask the seller to separate routine servicing from repairs, recalls and optional modifications. Request the date and mileage of each service, the identity of the workshop, copies of major invoices and details of any work performed outside the authorised network. An apparently complete history with no invoices is weaker evidence than a coherent set of dated documents.

Ask whether any previous owner has made a warranty claim and whether a modification could affect future cover.

Clarify what is included in the sale: both keys, manuals, charging or diagnostic accessories if supplied, spare wheels or tyre equipment, and the original option documentation. These items do not change the engine’s published output, but missing paperwork can make future specification and warranty questions harder to resolve.
Comparing Emiras when prices and stock are unclear
Current local pricing and stock are not established by the model information above, and they can change by country, tax treatment, options and dealer supply. Build your comparison around evidence rather than a generic “starting price.” For each candidate, record the asking price, first-registration market, mileage, owners, accident history, service dates, tyre condition, remaining cover and included options.
When comparing a private sale with a dealer car, account for the cost of an independent inspection, transport, registration work, import taxes where applicable, immediate servicing and replacement tyres. Obtain quotations rather than assuming that a low purchase price represents a low total cost. The published UK service-plan prices are useful context for routine-service budgeting, but they do not cover every repair or every market.
| Decision axis | Question to answer | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Engine and gearbox | Do you want the manual character of the V6, the listed V6 automatic option, or the dual-clutch four-cylinder? | VIN build sheet, transmission photographs and a test drive |
| Trim and year | Is it First Edition, V6 SE, Turbo SE or Turbo, and which model-year specification applies? | Original order, factory specification and market documentation |
| Performance claim | Does the quoted 0–62 mph figure belong to this exact engine and trim? | Lotus specification for the named variant; do not treat it as an independent test |
| Condition | Are tyres, wheels, brakes, suspension and bodywork free of costly defects? | Specialist inspection, invoices and photographs taken before purchase |
| Coverage | What warranty or service-plan entitlement actually transfers? | Written confirmation from Lotus or an authorised repairer |
| Recall status | Are all VIN-specific campaigns completed? | Recall-authority and Lotus confirmation tied to the VIN |
Common buying pitfalls
- Treating every 2025 car as identical: registration year does not replace the model-year, market and VIN specification.
- Assuming First Edition means SE: the launch-era label belongs to an earlier range and must not be used as shorthand for later equipment.
- Comparing a 360 bhp Turbo with a 400 bhp Turbo SE: the published figures refer to different configurations.
- Accepting “automatic V6” without proof: Lotus lists the option, but market availability must be confirmed on the specific car.
- Ordering tyres from one dimension alone: confirm ratings, approval, wheel setup and axle fitment before purchase.
- Valuing an advertised service plan without checking transfer: obtain written confirmation of remaining services and the current administration process.
- Using a model-wide fault story as a diagnosis: the appropriate response to a noise, warning or uneven tyre is an inspection of that individual vehicle.
- Skipping a VIN recall check: a clean-looking car can still have an outstanding campaign, while a completed campaign needs documentary confirmation.
A practical purchase decision
Choose the V6 when a manual gearbox is central to the decision and the specific car’s market supports the configuration you want. The listed automatic V6 may suit a buyer who prioritises two-pedal driving, but verify that the car really has it and that local support is available. Choose between Turbo and Turbo SE only after confirming the model year and equipment, because Lotus publishes different power and acceleration figures for them.
Whichever engine you select, rank the evidence in this order: VIN-linked identity and specification, complete service and ownership records, recall confirmation, tyre and wheel condition, then an independent inspection and road test. A desirable colour or trim badge cannot compensate for missing documentation, overdue maintenance or unresolved mechanical concerns.
Lotus describes the Turbo as “the entry point to the Emira lineup, designed for everyday usability while preserving the unmistakable Lotus driving thrill.” That is Lotus’s promotional description, not an independent assessment. Treat it as positioning, then judge the individual car on documented specification, condition and support available in your market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Lotus Emira engine should I buy?
The V6 is the choice to investigate if you want a six-speed manual; Lotus also lists an automatic V6. The AMG-sourced 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder uses an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Compare the exact car’s market, trim, service history and condition rather than choosing from the engine name alone.
Is the Lotus Emira V6 manual?
A six-speed manual is listed for the supercharged V6, and Lotus also lists an automatic option. Verify the transmission on the VIN build sheet, registration documents, photographs and a test drive because availability varies by market.

What is the difference between Emira Turbo and Turbo SE?
Lotus lists 360 bhp and 0–62 mph in 4.4 seconds for Turbo, and 400 bhp and 4.0 seconds for Turbo SE. Equipment and naming are model-year and market dependent, so request the factory specification for the individual VIN.
What does Emira First Edition mean?
It identifies the launch-era range introduced around 2021. It is not automatically equivalent to a later V6 SE or Turbo SE, so confirm the original build specification and options.
What tyres does the Lotus Emira use?
Lotus’s model specification lists 245/35 R20 at the front and 295/30 R20 at the rear. Confirm the full size, speed and load ratings, approval marking, compound and wheel compatibility for the actual VIN before ordering.

How often does an Emira need servicing?
The UK Emira Service Plan summary states every 10,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first. Treat that as the documented UK-plan interval and confirm the schedule for the car’s market and model year.
How much is the Lotus Emira service plan?
The UK summary lists £1,599 including VAT for the V6 plan and £2,699 including VAT for the four-cylinder Turbo plan, covering the first three routine services for qualifying new UK cars. Prices, eligibility and transfer terms are time-sensitive; obtain current confirmation before valuing a used car.
How do I check an Emira recall?
Give the VIN to the relevant national recall authority and Lotus or an authorised repairer. Ask for written confirmation of outstanding or completed campaigns and retain any completion invoice.
Are there common Lotus Emira faults I should expect?
The information available here does not establish verified fault frequencies or a model-wide used-car defect list. Have the exact car inspected by a Lotus-qualified specialist and treat any warning, noise, uneven wear or missing record as an individual condition question.
Should I buy a dealer or private-sale Emira?
Compare the evidence rather than the seller category: VIN and build documentation, service invoices, recall status, warranty or plan transfer, tyre condition and an independent inspection. Include inspection, transport, registration and immediate maintenance costs in the total budget.
The Bottom Line
The right Emira is the one whose engine, gearbox and trim are proven by its VIN and factory paperwork, then supported by a coherent service record, completed recall checks, correct tyres and an independent inspection. Use Lotus’s performance figures to compare like-for-like variants, not as promises of road-test results, and verify every market-specific price, warranty and service-plan term before committing.
