Smart’s May 21, 2021 preview was a first look at an all-electric compact SUV concept—not a production-car launch. The company credited the exterior design to the Mercedes-Benz Design Network and said the show car was based on Geely’s modular SEA platform. Smart planned to unveil the concept at IAA Mobility in September 2021, but its announcement did not give a production name, launch date, price or final specifications. Read Smart’s announcement.
What Smart announced
Smart described the vehicle as an SUV show-car concept and the first concept from Smart Automobile Co., Ltd. The joint venture was founded in December 2019 by Mercedes-Benz AG and Geely Holding. The May 2021 release offered an early preview more than three months before the concept’s scheduled September premiere at IAA Mobility 2021.
The division of roles in the announcement is specific: the Mercedes-Benz Design Network was responsible for exterior design, while the vehicle was based on Geely’s SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) modular platform. That does not mean Mercedes-Benz supplied the whole vehicle or that Geely alone engineered every system.
What the concept previewed
Exterior and cabin
Smart highlighted concealed door handles, illuminated elements and a large panoramic roof. It also described a large, modern interior with a premium feel. These are details and characterizations from the concept announcement, not a complete set of confirmed production specifications.

Connectivity ideas
The company said the concept would have distinctive user-interface and user-experience elements. It also named voice control and a seamless digital key as standard features planned for every vehicle. The release does not establish that those features reached a production model unchanged.
Who Smart said it was for
Smart positioned the compact electric SUV especially for young families seeking electric transportation without giving up an urban, avant-garde image. That was the manufacturer’s description of its intended audience, not the result of independent consumer research.
Daniel Lescow, then Vice President global Sales, Marketing & After-Sales at smart Automobile Co., Ltd., described the intended balance as “super-compact on the outside and big on the inside.” Gorden Wagener, then Chief Design Officer Daimler Group, framed the concept as a fresh design identity for the brand.

The 2021 release did not state final dimensions, powertrain output, battery capacity, driving range, charging figures, price, retail availability or a production name. It should therefore be read as a design and platform preview, not as a basis for judging the specifications or value of a car for sale.
