The phrase “Aussie road-legal V8 superbike” points to two different Australian motorcycle projects: the PGM V8, listed with a 1,996 cc engine, and a separate 750 V8 project featured by Cycle World in November 1997. The PGM’s maker publishes striking specifications, but those figures do not establish an independently tested result or prove that a particular bike is currently approved and registered for road use.
Two Australian V8 projects, not one continuous story
The PGM V8 is the modern machine most directly associated with the Australian V8 superbike description. Its manufacturer lists a 90-degree, 1,996 cc V8 and an array of high-end chassis and brake components.
Separately, Cycle World’s November 1997 “Aussie V8 Superbike” feature covers a 750 V8 project. It describes the builder’s ambition to create a road-legal factory racer. The available accounts do not establish that this project became the PGM V8, so the two should not be conflated.
What PGM says about its V8
PGM’s published figures describe a large-displacement, high-revving engine in a purpose-built chassis. They are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified test results. In particular, PGM says the power and torque figures are measured at the countershaft sprocket; they are not directly comparable with crankshaft or rear-wheel figures for other motorcycles.

What the 1997 “Aussie V8 Superbike” article records
The period feature documents a distinct 750 V8 project and its builder’s road-use ambition. It reports hopes to have the team running by the end of 1997 and to hand-assemble no more than 10 motorcycles a year. Those were plans expressed at the time, not evidence that production began or that this number of bikes was built.

Does “road legal” mean you can register one today?
No—not by itself. “Road legal” may describe a builder’s goal or a manufacturer’s intended use. Current approval and registration are questions about a particular vehicle, its identity and the rules in the relevant jurisdiction. The available sources do not establish the current approval or registration status of any PGM V8 example.

Australian national approval
The Australian Government describes the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) as a searchable database of vehicles approved for provision to the Australian market under the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018. For specialist and enthusiast vehicles, the government says entry on the RAV precedes presentation for state or territory registration. This process description does not confirm that an individual PGM V8 is on the register or currently registered. See the government’s vehicle portals and specialist and enthusiast vehicle guidance.
State and territory requirements
Registration requirements also depend on the applicable state or territory rules. For example, Victoria’s motorcycle standards guidance says relevant requirements depend on the vehicle’s manufacture date, and modifications must not make it noncompliant with applicable Australian Design Rules or registration standards. That is Victorian guidance, not a universal conclusion for every Australian jurisdiction. Consult Transport Victoria’s motorcycle and moped standards summary for that jurisdiction.

How to compare V8 superbike claims fairly
A headline power number or the words “road legal” are not enough to establish that one V8 motorcycle outperforms another or can be registered where you live. Check what each claim actually describes:
- Engine and configuration: Compare displacement and layout, and confirm whether the source describes a prototype, a project or a production motorcycle.
- Power and torque measurement: Identify whether output is measured at the countershaft, crankshaft or rear wheel. PGM’s published figures use the countershaft sprocket.
- Weight basis: Distinguish wet from dry weight. PGM lists 242 kg wet with fuel, water and lubricants.
- Road status: Look for approval and registration evidence for the specific motorcycle and the relevant jurisdiction, rather than relying on a period goal or a broad “road legal” description.
- Evidence quality: Separate manufacturer specifications from independently tested results and from production claims.
The available sources do not provide enough verified competitor data to rank the PGM V8 against other V8 motorcycles.
