LiquidPiston’s Rotary-X is an experimental rotary engine architecture built around a different thermodynamic cycle—not a production engine proven to deliver the efficiency figures sometimes associated with it. A 2024 paper listing describes 75% as the cycle’s thermodynamic-efficiency potential, while a separate 2018 development paper gives 45% peak brake thermal efficiency as a target for a 30 kW prototype. Those figures describe different things, and neither establishes a verified production-engine result.
What is the Rotary-X engine?
The Rotary-X is LiquidPiston’s engine architecture, paired with the company’s High Efficiency Hybrid Cycle (HEHC). In a simplified description from Hackaday’s 2021 explainer, it is an “inside-out Wankel”: instead of a triangular rotor moving inside an oval housing, the X engine uses an oval rotor in a triangular housing. The rotor contains the intake and exhaust ports and chambers; combustion occurs in each chamber as the rotor turns. That comparison helps visualize the layout, but it does not capture the full engineering design.
A 2024 SAE paper listing describes HEHC as an optimized thermodynamic cycle and says the X architecture is intended to address challenges associated with Wankel-type engines, including sealing, lubrication, durability and emissions. Those are design aims, not evidence that each challenge has been solved in commercial service. SAE’s 2024 listing
What do the 75% and 45% efficiency figures mean?
They refer to different measures and different stages of development. The 75% figure is described in the 2024 SAE listing as thermodynamic-efficiency potential for the cycle. It is not a reported measurement of the engine’s brake thermal efficiency. The 45% figure is a target for peak brake thermal efficiency in a 2018 X4 development program—not a verified rating for a production engine.

| Figure | What the cited source says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 75% | Thermodynamic-efficiency potential, as described in a 2024 SAE paper listing by LiquidPiston authors. SAE listing | Measured brake thermal efficiency in an operating production engine. |
| 45% | Target peak brake thermal efficiency for a 30 kW heavy-fueled compression-ignition X4 prototype, in a 2018 development paper by LiquidPiston authors. SAE abstract | A demonstrated production rating or a result independently verified under a stated test protocol. |
Brake thermal efficiency describes how much of the fuel’s energy becomes useful shaft output. A cycle-level potential and a prototype target cannot be treated as equivalent to a measured engine result. A meaningful comparison with a Wankel, piston diesel or small turbine would require results measured under comparable conditions, along with details such as output, fuel, emissions, durability and cost. The cited material does not provide an independent, consistent head-to-head test.
What has prototype testing shown?
The 2018 SAE abstract reports initial progress on the X4, a 30 kW heavy-fueled compression-ignition prototype. It says initial tests verified system integrity and that the core engine structure and gas seals were validated. At that stage, performance optimization remained future work. This supports describing the X4 as a development program with early component and system validation; it does not demonstrate long-term durability, the 45% target, or commercial deployment.

A later SAE listing discusses preliminary results for an X engine targeting 45% peak brake thermal efficiency. It identifies generator, auxiliary power unit and range-extended electric vehicle applications as intended uses. These are development targets and possible applications, not evidence of established products or field-proven outcomes. SAE’s 2024 listing
Is the Rotary-X available for cars?
The available evidence does not establish a production-car program or current consumer availability. In 2021, Hackaday reported that LiquidPiston was developing a compact generator for an artillery power system for the U.S. Army and said an SBIR contract would support further development for military uses. The same article reported X-Mini development kits starting at $30,000 at that time. That is historical reporting, not a current price or confirmation that kits remain available. LiquidPiston’s SEC-filed company disclosure makes comparative size, weight and efficiency claims for the Rotary-X. Those figures should be understood as claims made by the company in that filing, not independently measured comparative results. LiquidPiston SEC filing
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What would prove a thermodynamic breakthrough?
The strongest evidence would be independently reported engine tests that specify the test conditions and show measured brake thermal efficiency, output, fuel and ignition configuration, emissions, and operating duration. For a car application, manufacturing cost, durability, packaging and commercial availability would also matter. The available papers describe a distinctive architecture, cycle potential, prototype progress and intended applications; they do not establish a universal efficiency advantage or a ready-to-buy automotive engine.
