Its gearbox is a Weddle S5 sequential transaxle: the driver shifts it, but it is not a conventional H-pattern manual. Liberty Walk’s documented role is the widebody kit.
Who built the C8 Corvette drift car?
Formula Drift driver Matt Field and his Drift Cave team converted a flood-damaged salvage C8 Corvette into a drift car. The car debuted at SEMA 2024. Liberty Walk contributed its signature widebody, while Weddle Industries supplied the S5 sequential transaxle. Weddle’s build coverage and DRIFTED’s SEMA report describe those distinct roles.
What does “manual” mean on this car?
It means the driver shifts a sequential gearbox rather than relying on an automatic transmission. The Weddle S5 is a sequential-shift transaxle, not an H-pattern gearbox, where the driver selects gears by moving a lever through a gated pattern. Calling Field’s car a “sequentially shifted manual C8” is more precise than implying it has a conventional manual transmission.
How did the Weddle S5 fit the mid-engine C8?
Packaging constrained the gearbox choice. Weddle says the replacement needed dimensions close to the C8’s original unit, including a short distance from the CV-joint centerline to the back of the block and an input shaft positioned below that centerline. The S5 can be installed mid-engine and inverted, which suited the layout. Weddle’s technical build update describes the installation and fabrication.

The conversion used a Weddle VW-style bell housing with a side-positioned starter and an adapter plate to mount the transmission to the LS V8 block. Chris Purceski of Parts Shop Max handled CAD design work, and Rob Ellis performed CNC work on a custom transaxle mount. The build also involved a front angle kit, roll cage, plumbing and wiring, and custom carbon panels, according to Weddle.
Why choose a sequential transaxle for drifting?
Drifting places heavy demands on a drivetrain, including abrupt clutch engagement and handbrake use. Weddle says Field needed a gearbox capable of withstanding “1000 hp clutch kicks” and handbrake dumps. That is Weddle’s account of the design requirement behind the choice—not a verified engine output, a measured power figure for the finished car, or an independent durability test.

What is Liberty Walk’s connection to the build?
Liberty Walk supplied the widebody styling; Field and Drift Cave led the car’s conversion. DRIFTED’s report on the SEMA unveiling describes the car as using a naturally aspirated LS engine and notes that demonstrations were planned at the time. Later event coverage confirms the car went on to appear at events. Liberty Walk’s current C8 kit listing covers 2020-and-newer Stingray coupe and hardtop convertible fitments, with front bumper, side diffusers, rear bumper and widebody fenders, plus wing options. It does not establish which exact retail kit configuration was fitted to Field’s car.

Weddle reports that Field tested and showcased the C8 during the 2025 Formula Drift tour and at events around the United States, including Thunderhill, Drift Appalachia and Long Beach. Its event article also points readers to US appearances in 2026, but schedules can change. Weddle’s 2025 event report gives its account of the tour.

At the LZ World Tour event at Castle Combe in England, Field competed in the C8 for the first time and won, according to Weddle’s event report. Field described the result this way: “After a few years of doing demos with the C8, this was the first time I got to compete in it and boy did she rip! Feels damn good to come home from the UK with a win.”
