Lewis Hamilton completed 30 laps in a Ferrari SF-23 at Fiorano on January 22, 2025, beginning in fog on wet tyres before switching to slicks. Michael Schumacher’s first reported Fiorano run, in November 1995, was 20 laps in a 412 T2. Those totals describe two very different sessions—not a contest over who was faster.
How many laps did Lewis Hamilton do in his first Ferrari test?
Hamilton completed 30 laps at Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit on January 22, 2025, driving the SF-23. He started with an installation lap on wet tyres in fog; as conditions developed, he switched to slicks, completed flying laps and practised starts. Formula 1 described the outing as part of his immersion in the team, while Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur characterized it as a warm-up for the garage and team. Formula 1’s report and BBC Sport’s coverage report the session details.
What Ferrari did Hamilton drive at Fiorano?
He drove the Ferrari SF-23, the team’s 2023 Formula 1 car. It was a familiarization outing rather than a race weekend or a direct comparison test. The weather and session purpose matter when interpreting the lap count: the 30 laps were completed across a changing surface and included installation, flying laps and practice starts.
How did Hamilton’s Ferrari debut compare with Schumacher’s?
| Outing | Date and circuit | Car | Reported laps | Context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari run | January 22, 2025, Fiorano | SF-23 | 30 | Fog and damp at the start; wet tyres first, then slicks. Team familiarization and garage warm-up. |
| Michael Schumacher’s first reported Fiorano run | November 16, 1995, Fiorano | 412 T2 | 20 | Fog was also reported; the available account does not establish that the sessions otherwise matched. |
PlanetF1 reported Schumacher’s 20-lap figure and noted that official times were not released for either his or Hamilton’s first outings. PlanetF1’s comparison is therefore useful for the historical lap-count parallel, but it does not provide a verified basis for ranking their pace.

Did Charles Leclerc drive a Ferrari before Hamilton?
Yes. Formula 1’s retrospective result identifies a 2016 Fiorano test in the Ferrari F14 T as Leclerc’s first Ferrari F1-car test. The available account does not establish how many laps he completed, so there is no supported lap-count comparison for that outing. It was also separate from his later Ferrari race debut. Formula 1’s retrospective identifies the car and test.
Leclerc also drove at Fiorano on Hamilton’s debut day, completing 14 laps in the SF-23 during a separate afternoon programme and performing donuts for fans. Those 14 laps were not his first Ferrari laps; they were a distinct 2025 run reported alongside Hamilton’s session by Formula 1.

Were Hamilton’s first Ferrari lap times released?
No official first-run lap time for Hamilton or Schumacher was given in PlanetF1’s comparison. Without verified times from comparable conditions and programmes, their lap totals cannot establish which driver was quicker. The sessions took place 30 years apart in different cars, and Hamilton’s run began in fog and damp conditions. Leclerc’s 2016 test also lacks an established lap count in the available account, while his 14 laps in 2025 came under a separate programme.

Hamilton described the occasion as a personal milestone after stepping out of the car. “I’ve been lucky enough to have many firsts in my career, from the first test to the first race, podium, win and championship, so I wasn’t sure how many more firsts I had but driving a Scuderia Ferrari HP car for the first time this morning, was one of the best feelings of my life,” he said, according to Formula 1’s January 22, 2025 report.
