In J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, Lexus leads premium brands with 151 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). Land Rover scores better than Volvo: its 274 PP100 is lower than Volvo’s 296. Lower scores indicate fewer reported problems in this study.

The comparison below uses the same measure, study edition and geography: brand-level PP100 in J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.

J.D. Power reports that rankings are based on numerical scores and are not necessarily statistically significant. The 22-point difference is the arithmetic gap between Land Rover and Volvo’s published scores, not proof that the difference is statistically significant. J.D. Power’s 2026 study release provides the scores and ranking caveat.
What PP100 measures—and what it does not
PP100 means problems per 100 vehicles. It standardizes the number of problems reported by owners against a group of 100 vehicles; it is not the percentage of vehicles that failed. A vehicle can have more than one reported problem, and the score is a survey measure rather than a pass-or-fail reliability test.

The VDS asks original owners about problems experienced with three-year-old vehicles. The 2026 results therefore describe that owner cohort’s reported experience. They do not guarantee how a particular used vehicle will perform, and they should not automatically be treated as a verdict on every new model year. J.D. How the 2026 results compare with 2025
All three brands had higher PP100 scores in the 2026 edition than in the 2025 edition. The figures are useful as a year-to-year snapshot, but two editions alone do not establish a lasting trend.

These are J.D. Power’s published U.S. study scores for each edition; the comparison does not show that the same vehicles or owners were followed over time. The 2025 study release lists the earlier scores.
What problems most affected the industry score?
The 2026 industry average was 204 PP100, two points above 2025 and the highest recorded since the study was redesigned in 2022. Infotainment was the most problematic of the study’s nine categories, at 56.7 PP100; exterior problems ranked second, at 27.5 PP100. These category scores help explain the broader results, but they are not brand-specific figures for Lexus, Land Rover or Volvo.

J.D. Power’s release quotes Jason Norton, its director of auto benchmarking, saying: “Software updates and new technologies should enhance the ownership experience over time, yet many vehicle owners cite ongoing mobile phone integration problems and little to no benefit after an update is performed.” The release also gives the category figures and industry average: 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.

- Use the brand scores as one broad comparison, not as a substitute for checking a specific model, model year, service history and vehicle condition.
- For a used car, assess the individual vehicle and its records. A brand-level survey result cannot tell you whether that car has been maintained or repaired well.
- Keep the study’s cohort in mind: it reflects original owners’ reports about three-year-old vehicles, not a direct forecast for a different age, generation or model year.
