Amati was Mazda’s planned U.S. luxury-car division, but it never reached showrooms. Announced in August 1991 for a spring 1994 launch, the project was canceled in October 1992 as Mazda weighed the recession and competition from established luxury brands. The later Mazda Millenia is linked to one intended Amati model, but it was sold as a Mazda—not an Amati.

What was Amati?

Amati was a proposed premium marque for the U.S. market, with a separate dealer network and two new sedans planned for its launch. Mazda announced the division on August 20, 1991, and targeted spring 1994 for its arrival, according to United Press International’s announcement report.

The idea was to give Mazda a distinct presence in the luxury segment rather than simply sell more expensive cars under its existing name. Contemporary reporting described efforts to position Amati apart from Lexus, Infiniti and Acura, the Japanese luxury brands already competing for American buyers.

How far did Mazda get before canceling it?

The plan advanced beyond an announcement. In January 1992, the Los Angeles Times reported that Mazda had awarded its Amati advertising account to Lord, Dentsu & Partners, with a reported value of $75 million. That was the reported value of the account award, not evidence that Mazda spent the full amount.

By the time Mazda canceled the U.S. program in October, 67 prospective dealers had signed initial agreements, the Los Angeles Times reported. Mazda notified those prospective dealers of the decision. The proposed cars had been expected to sell for $35,000 to $45,000, a planned 1992 price range rather than an actual retail price.

Why did Mazda cancel Amati?

Mazda officials cited concern about competing in the luxury-car market during a worldwide recession. The cancellation report also placed the decision against a difficult business backdrop: it said U.S. car sales were down 15% from the prior year and Mazda’s U.S. sales for the first nine months were down 2.2% to 262,000 cars and trucks. Those are figures reported for the periods described in 1992, not present-day market data.

The same report noted that Mazda had recently launched five new vehicles in the United States. Auto industry analyst Douglas Kevorkian of J.D. Power & Associates questioned whether the company could catch up with Lexus or Infiniti after those launches, saying the spending “has got to have stripped their coffers.” That was an analyst’s assessment, not Mazda’s explanation or proof of what Amati would have achieved. The available contemporary account points to a combination of recession, competitive pressure and the burden of funding another brand—not one confirmed, isolated cause.

Was the Mazda Millenia supposed to be an Amati?

There is a connection, but the distinction matters. A 2021 retrospective by L’Annuel de l’automobile describes an intended Amati 500 executive sedan as a program that later appeared in the United States as the Mazda Millenia. It also associates that model with the Eunos 800 and Xedos 9 in other markets.

That retrospective describes a broader proposed range: the compact Amati 300, executive Amati 500 and flagship Amati 1000. The detailed model mapping comes from that later secondary account; the contemporary cancellation coverage does not establish production specifications for the 1000. Most importantly, no customer bought a car wearing the Amati name. The Millenia was a Mazda product, not a rebadged Amati that reached market under the canceled division.

Could Amati really have been a “Lexus killer”?

That label is a counterfactual, not a measurable result. Amati never launched, so there is no production car, customer record or real-world comparison that can show whether it would have beaten Lexus. The evidence supports a more grounded comparison: Mazda planned a separate luxury brand and retail network for a 1994 entry, then abandoned the U.S. effort in 1992 as recession and competition made the commitment harder to justify.

The scale of the preparations makes Amati more than a name on a drawing board, but it does not settle whether the brand could have succeeded. Kevorkian’s contemporary skepticism is one analyst’s view; the project’s unrealized outcome leaves the larger claim untestable.

Why does Amati still matter in Mazda’s history?

Amati captures Mazda’s attempt to move upmarket at a moment when Japanese automakers were establishing dedicated luxury brands in the United States. Mazda made public plans, arranged advertising and sought dealers, but stopped before the planned launch. The company’s 1991 Le Mans victory with the 787B provides a notable backdrop to the period; Mazda’s corporate history records that win, though it does not establish a connection between the racing result and Amati’s strategy.

What endured was not an Amati showroom or production line, but a later Mazda model associated with one part of the proposed range. That is why the Millenia can be discussed as part of Amati’s legacy without calling it an Amati.
