Short answer: The Lexus NX is the stronger choice if your priorities are the available hybrid’s fuel economy, longer powertrain and hybrid-component coverage in the cited 2025 comparison, and lower estimated maintenance and repair costs in Edmunds’ Phoenix example. The BMW X3 is the better fit if you need substantially more cargo room, prefer its available performance-oriented powertrains, or value BMW’s three years/36,000 miles of included scheduled maintenance. What the reliability studies actually show
NX: strong results, but not a guarantee
JD Power’s 2025 Lexus NX versus 2025 BMW X3 comparison reports that the NX ranked highest in the compact premium SUV segment in the 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. That study asked owners about problems during the third year of ownership, making it more relevant to longer-term durability than a showroom inspection.

X3: absence from the cited top-three lists is limited evidence
The X3 did not place among the top three models in the cited 2026 dependability or 2025 initial-quality results. That is not the same as a finding that every X3 is unreliable. It means only that the model was not a top-three finisher in those particular studies and years.
How to interpret the 2026 dependability numbers
JD Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reported an industry average of 204 problems per 100 vehicles after three years. The study covered 33,268 original owners of 2023-model-year vehicles, fielded from December 2024 through November 2025, and examined 184 problem areas across nine categories. Lower PP100 is better. Lexus, as a brand, recorded 151 PP100 and ranked highest among premium brands.
The 151 PP100 figure is a brand-level result, not proof that the NX was one of the study’s three highest-ranked models. It also reflects 2023 vehicles and owner reports collected years later; it should not be presented as a forecast for a new 2026 vehicle or for a particular used X3 or NX.

As JD Power director of auto benchmarking Jason Norton put it in the February 12, 2026 dependability-study release: “As owners hold onto their vehicles longer, the long-term ownership experience matters more than ever.” That is why a buyer should combine survey results with the individual vehicle’s service history, recalls and condition.

Warranty protection and included maintenance
Lexus coverage
The cited 2025 comparison lists a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty for the NX and six years/70,000 miles of powertrain coverage. It lists eight years/100,000 miles for Lexus hybrid components. LexusCare says new Lexus vehicles include the first and second scheduled maintenance services and describes a four-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty.
LexusCare’s general information also describes a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid-battery warranty. Treat that as a program description rather than an automatic promise for every NX: model year, battery component, registration status and other eligibility rules can change. Ask the dealer to identify the exact warranty booklet and in-service date for the vehicle you are considering.
BMW coverage
The cited 2025 comparison lists the X3’s basic and powertrain warranties as four years/50,000 miles. BMW USA says BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles for a new BMW. The service schedule and covered operations are vehicle-specific, so obtain the service and warranty book rather than assuming every item is included.
Why warranty length matters differently for new and used buyers
For a new buyer who plans to keep the vehicle four or five years, Lexus’ longer powertrain term can reduce exposure to a major covered failure after the basic warranty ends. BMW’s included-maintenance period can offset routine-service bills earlier in ownership. For a used buyer, the remaining months and miles are more important than the original headline: a five-year-old NX may have no factory powertrain coverage left, while a lower-mileage example could still retain time-based coverage in a specific component category.

- Record the original in-service date, not just the model year.
- Check mileage limits and whether a warranty is transferable.
- Confirm whether a hybrid battery or inverter is covered separately from the gasoline engine.
- Ask for documentation of every included maintenance visit; missing records can complicate a warranty claim.
Maintenance and ownership costs: why the numbers are not interchangeable
RepairPal’s BMW figure
RepairPal reports an average annual unscheduled repair and maintenance cost of $1,034 for the BMW X3 across model years. RepairPal says its reliability measure combines cost, frequency and severity; routine small-shop visits such as oil changes are omitted from its frequency measure. The figure is therefore a broad historical signal, not a scheduled-service price for a 2025 or 2026 X3.
Edmunds’ five-year Phoenix estimates
Edmunds’ displayed comparison uses a selected 2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive and a selected 2026 Lexus NX 350h, with pricing near Phoenix, Arizona. Its five-year True Cost to Own totals are $81,310 for the BMW and $55,658 for the Lexus. Edmunds includes depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, fuel, insurance, maintenance and repairs.

The gap is large in this example, but it is not a universal ownership-cost verdict. It depends on Phoenix-area pricing, the selected trims and drivetrains, fuel and insurance assumptions, financing, depreciation and taxes. A different state, annual mileage, interest rate, insurance profile or resale market can materially change the total.

How to build a fair local comparison
- Select the same ownership period, such as five years, for both vehicles.
- Match annual mileage and fuel price assumptions.
- Request the factory service schedule for each exact engine and drivetrain.
- Ask a Lexus dealer, BMW dealer and reputable independent shop for itemized scheduled-service quotes through your planned ownership horizon.
- Add tires, brakes, registration, insurance, taxes, financing and depreciation separately so a low maintenance estimate is not mistaken for a low total cost.
- For a used vehicle, add a pre-purchase inspection and a reserve for age-related repairs.
Powertrains and fuel economy
Lexus NX choices
The 2025 NX lineup described in the comparison includes gasoline, hybrid and plug-in-hybrid choices. The 2026 comparison identifies NX 350h front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, NX 350, and NX 450h+ variants. The cited 2025 figure for the NX 350h AWD is 39 mpg combined; Edmunds lists 40 mpg combined for its selected 2026 NX 350h.

Those numbers belong to the specified 350h configurations. A gasoline NX 350 or a plug-in hybrid operated without charging will not deliver the same result. Drivetrain, wheel size, weather, speed, cargo and driving style also affect real-world consumption.
BMW X3 choices
The cited 2025 comparison lists X3 xDrive30 and M50 versions. The 2026 comparison lists 30 xDrive and M50 xDrive. Both the 2025 xDrive30 comparison and Edmunds’ selected 2026 X3 30 xDrive are listed at 29 mpg combined.
The M50’s performance focus, equipment and powertrain mean it should not be treated as a cost or fuel-economy equivalent to a 30 xDrive. Compare the version you would actually buy, including all-wheel drive and wheel size.

Cargo, passengers and daily usability
Utility can outweigh a favorable fuel or cost estimate. JD Power’s 2026 comparison gives the X3 31.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 67.1 cubic feet with the seats folded. The NX is listed at 22.7 and 46.9 cubic feet, respectively. That difference can determine whether a stroller, pet crate, bicycles or airport luggage fits without folding seats.

- Choose the X3 when rear-seat cargo volume and maximum load flexibility are frequent requirements.
- Choose the NX when the smaller cargo area meets your needs and hybrid fuel savings matter more.
- Measure your largest objects at the dealer; published volume does not guarantee a particular box or stroller will fit around wheel arches and hatch angles.
Buying a used NX or X3: inspect the car, not the reputation
Model-level studies cannot establish the condition of an individual used vehicle. Before agreeing to a price, obtain a vehicle-history report, maintenance invoices, recall status and a professional pre-purchase inspection.
Records and ownership history
- Look for time- and mileage-based services, not only oil-change receipts.
- Confirm that required hybrid inspections or cooling-system services were completed on an NX hybrid.
- For an X3, check that scheduled service was performed at the intervals specified in its service book and that warning lights were diagnosed rather than reset.
- Ask whether the vehicle was used for towing, track driving, delivery work or repeated short trips; those uses can alter wear.
Mechanical and electronic checks
- Have an independent technician scan all control modules for stored or pending faults.
- Test cold start, charging or hybrid operation where applicable, climate control, driver-assistance systems, cameras and infotainment.
- Inspect tires for uneven wear, brake measurements, suspension leaks, underbody damage and evidence of collision repair.
- Verify open recalls by vehicle identification number and confirm the remedy was completed.
Warranty verification

Choose the X3 when these priorities dominate
- You need the larger 31.5/67.1-cubic-foot cargo layout.
