There is no defensible generation-wide reliability winner for the Lexus NX based on the available comparable ratings. The NX’s first generation covers model years 2015–2021, and its second generation began with the 2022 redesign. Consumer Reports gives favorable relative-to-the-same-year descriptions to selected years in both generations, but those descriptions are not a direct cross-year scorecard. For a used NX, compare the specific model year and powertrain, then verify recalls, service history, and condition.
How the Lexus NX generations compare
The first-generation NX launched for the 2015 model year. The second generation arrived for 2022, which Consumer Reports identifies as a redesign year; J.D. Power also describes the 2022 model as a redesign. That makes 2022 a useful boundary for comparison, but it does not establish that the redesign year is less reliable.

These are selected Consumer Reports summaries, not a full table of every NX model year or separate ratings for gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. On this evidence, neither generation can be ranked first overall. The summaries do show that positive descriptions appear in both generations, while 2024 is described as about average.
Why these descriptions do not produce a reliable year ranking
Consumer Reports says its reliability histories draw on its latest subscriber survey covering about 380,000 vehicles and track 20 potential trouble spots. Its model-year summaries compare a vehicle with other vehicles from that same year. A favorable label for a 2016 NX and one for a 2023 NX therefore does not show which would have fewer problems over the same ownership period.

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reports Lexus at 140 problems per 100 vehicles. That is a Lexus brand-level result, not an NX-specific score, and cannot establish which NX generation is more reliable.
A defensible numerical ranking would require comparable scores for the model years being considered, measured by the same source and interpreted for the same survey period and powertrain. The available summaries do not provide that complete matrix, so assigning first and second place to the generations would overstate what they show.

What to check before buying a used Lexus NX
Compare like with like
- Compare the same powertrain where possible: gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions should not be treated as interchangeable reliability samples.
- Use the same reliability source and comparable model-year scores. A same-year comparison is useful context, not proof that one model year beats another.
- Consider the 2022 redesign as a generation change, not evidence by itself of a first-year reliability problem.
Verify recalls by VIN
Consumer Reports pages surfaced six recalls for the 2022 NX, four for the 2023, and five for the 2025 at the time those pages were retrieved. These counts can change and do not measure reliability on their own. A reported rearview-camera campaign, NHTSA 26V162000, concerns an image that may fail to display in certain 2022–2025 NX350 and NX250 vehicles. Notification letters were mailed May 15, 2026. Applicability and remedy status depend on the individual vehicle, so use the NHTSA VIN recall lookup and confirm whether any applicable repair has been completed.
Assess the specific vehicle
- Review service records for regular maintenance and documented repairs.
- Arrange an independent inspection before purchase; a model-year reputation cannot substitute for evaluating the vehicle’s present condition.
- Use recall completion, service history, powertrain, and condition together rather than relying on generation labels alone.
The evidence cited here does not establish a mechanical defect common to an entire NX generation. It also does not support a universal list of NX years to avoid.
