The engine’s character is central to the LC experience. Throttle response is tied directly to your right foot, and the rising V8 note is part of the car’s appeal even when you are not driving at the limit. That personality is difficult to duplicate with a smaller turbocharged engine, regardless of how quickly a stopwatch says the car accelerates.
BMW M8 Competition: a high-output GT with performance-car hardware
The M8 Competition uses a 617-horsepower twin-turbo V8 and all-wheel drive. That combination gives it a clear performance advantage on paper and a traction advantage when the road is wet, cold or dusty. The M8’s all-wheel-drive system prioritizes traction. It is especially useful for drivers who regularly encounter heavy rain, snow or freezing temperatures, although winter tires remain essential in genuinely wintry climates. AWD does not eliminate the need for appropriate tires, and it does not make braking distances shorter on a slippery surface.

The M8 is the faster instrument; the LC can be the more engaging soundtrack and response package for a driver who values involvement over maximum output.
Ride, comfort and daily usability

Technology and safety expectations
The ownership guidance for the LC includes Lexus’s standard safety and infotainment package. Verify the exact equipment on the model year and option sheet you are considering, because dealer-installed accessories and special editions can change the final specification.
With the BMW, confirm the equipment level rather than assuming every desirable feature is included in a particular M8. Ask for the original build sheet, check the operation of every driver-assistance function and test the infotainment, cameras, audio system and climate controls during the inspection.
Practicality
Neither car should be selected as a family-hauling solution. The ranges show why a used BMW is not automatically the bargain choice. A lightly used, highly optioned M8 can still cost more than a newer LC, while a high-mileage LC with neglected tires or cosmetic damage can be a poor value despite its lower asking price. Compare total condition and documented maintenance, not only model year and odometer reading.

- Request the vehicle identification number and a complete build sheet.
- Separate the advertised vehicle price from destination, documentation fees, taxes, registration and accessories.
- Ask for written finance terms, including annual percentage rate, term and total interest.
- Obtain insurance quotes using the exact VIN; performance-coupe premiums vary by driver, location, coverage and claims history.
- Price a set of replacement tires and a brake job before signing, so the first major consumable expense is not a surprise.
Fuel use and running costs
Cars.com lists the LC at 16 city/24 highway mpg and the M8 at 15 city/22 highway mpg. The Lexus has a modest efficiency advantage, but neither car is inexpensive to fuel when driven hard. Real-world results will depend on traffic, ambient temperature, tire pressures, trip length and how frequently you use the engines’ performance.
Fuel economy is only one part of ownership cost. High-performance tires, brake components, alignment work and insurance can outweigh the difference at the pump. The BMW’s higher output and all-wheel-drive hardware may increase the cost of some consumables, but there is no sufficiently authoritative five-to-ten-year comparative cost study to declare a universal maintenance winner.

For either car, identify a dealer or independent specialist before purchase. A shop that routinely services high-performance V8 coupes will be better prepared to interpret diagnostic data, inspect cooling systems and recognize prior track use than a general repair facility that rarely sees these models.
