Toyota lists the Camry from $29,600 and up to 51 mpg combined, while Lexus lists the ES 350h at about $51,000 and 46 mpg combined with front-wheel drive (FWD) or 44 mpg with all-wheel drive (AWD). The Lexus makes more system power—244 net combined horsepower versus up to 232 in the Camry—but costs roughly $21,000 more before options.
Choose the Camry if low purchase cost, maximum fuel economy, broad trim choice and a clearly published hybrid-battery warranty matter most. Choose the ES 350h if you specifically want a larger, luxury-positioned sedan with Lexus appointments, a 14-inch infotainment display and a slightly stronger hybrid system. Neither manufacturer’s specifications alone prove that one is quieter, safer, faster in real-world driving or more reliable over the long term.

At a glance: the two hybrid sedans
These cars use similar basic ingredients—a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor hardware—but target different buyers. Toyota makes every 2026 Camry a hybrid and positions it as a mainstream midsize sedan. Lexus describes the redesigned ES as a luxury hybrid sedan and uses a sixth-generation hybrid system in the 350h.

The price figures are not presented identically: Lexus’s model page and newsroom chart differ by $100 and treat destination differently. Ask a dealer for an itemized local quote before comparing totals. Destination charges, options, taxes, registration, incentives and regional availability can change the amount you actually pay.

Price and value: what does the Lexus premium buy?
Camry’s lower entry point
Toyota lists a $29,600 starting MSRP for the 2026 Camry Hybrid. Because the entire lineup is hybrid-powered, you do not have to move to an expensive trim to obtain the fuel-saving powertrain. The LE is also the most efficient version in Toyota’s published figures, reaching 51 mpg combined with FWD.
ES 350h pricing and the gap to Camry
Lexus lists the 2026 ES 350h Premium FWD at $51,095 on its model page. A Lexus newsroom pricing chart lists $50,995 including destination, followed by $52,395 for Premium AWD, $55,795 for Premium+ and $57,195 for Premium+ AWD. Those are different official displays rather than evidence of a universal transaction price, so verify which charge structure applies to the vehicle you are considering.
Using the two front-wheel-drive starting figures, the difference is approximately $21,395 to $21,495 before options. That is a substantial budget jump, not a small trim surcharge. The Lexus premium reflects brand positioning, additional equipment and the ES’s larger redesign; the published specifications do not quantify how much of the price difference translates into lower noise, longer life or greater resale value.
How to judge value for your situation
- Choose Camry value when the purchase price, fuel cost and warranty clarity outweigh luxury materials or a larger body.
- Consider ES value when you plan to keep the car for its comfort-oriented equipment and luxury presentation, and the higher upfront cost fits your budget without reducing your emergency or maintenance reserves.
- Compare like for like. A Camry XLE or XSE with options can narrow the equipment difference, while an ES Premium+ adds cost. Use window stickers and itemized quotes rather than comparing base MSRP with a heavily optioned car.
Fuel economy: Camry wins the EPA numbers
Camry’s trim-by-trim ratings
Toyota’s brochure gives separate city, highway and combined estimates. The figures below are EPA estimates as published by Toyota, not a promise of what every driver will achieve.
| Camry configuration | City mpg | Highway mpg | Combined mpg |
|---|---|---|---|
| LE FWD | 52 | 49 | 51 |
| LE AWD | 50 | 49 | 50 |
| SE, XLE or XSE FWD | 47 | 45 | 46 |
| SE or XLE AWD | 46 | 46 | 46 |
| XSE AWD | 43 | 43 | 43 |
The most efficient Camry therefore beats the ES 350h FWD by five mpg on the combined estimate and the ES AWD by seven mpg. Styling, wheel and tire packages, added equipment and the choice of AWD explain why a more expensive Camry trim can use more fuel than an LE.

ES 350h ratings
Lexus lists 46 mpg combined for the ES 350h FWD and 44 mpg combined for the AWD model. Those figures put the FWD Lexus on the same combined rating as several non-LE Camry configurations, but below the Camry LE. The AWD ES gives up two mpg on the combined estimate, while the Camry’s AWD penalty ranges from one mpg on the LE to three mpg on the XSE.
EPA estimates versus your fuel receipts
EPA numbers are standardized comparison figures. They are not independent road-test results and do not account for your speed, temperature, terrain, cargo, tire pressure, traffic or use of climate control. Treat the ratings as a way to compare configurations. If operating cost is decisive, use your own annual mileage and local fuel price with the EPA ratings, then leave room for seasonal variation rather than assuming the label result will be exact.
Powertrain and driving priorities
What the Lexus system provides
The ES 350h uses a sixth-generation hybrid system pairing a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a high-output electric motor. Lexus lists 244 net combined horsepower. That is 12 horsepower more than the Camry’s maximum published output, a difference that may matter to a buyer who regularly carries passengers or values stronger acceleration, but the available specifications do not establish a verified acceleration advantage.
What the Camry system provides
The Camry’s all-hybrid lineup produces up to 232 net combined horsepower. Toyota’s electronic on-demand AWD adds electric-drive capability at the rear when conditions call for it, while FWD versions prioritize lower weight and the highest fuel-economy ratings. Exact output by every Camry trim is not stated in the supplied specifications, so do not assume every version produces the maximum figure.
FWD or AWD?
Both sedans can be ordered with either drivetrain. FWD is usually the logical choice when you want the best EPA rating, lower purchase price and no need for additional traction hardware. AWD can help with launch traction on slippery roads, but it does not turn either sedan into a high-clearance all-weather vehicle and it reduces the published fuel-economy rating.

- Select FWD for maximum efficiency and a simpler decision if winter traction is not a regular concern.
- Select AWD if your normal routes include snow, steep wet roads or unpaved driveways and the added cost and fuel use are acceptable.
- Regardless of drivetrain, use appropriate tires. AWD cannot compensate for worn or unsuitable tires, excessive speed or poor road conditions.
Size, cabin mission and comfort expectations
The ES grows for its new generation
Lexus says the redesigned ES is 6.5 inches longer, 2.2 inches wider, 4.5 inches taller and built on a wheelbase 3.1 inches longer than the previous generation. Those are changes relative to the prior ES, not a direct dimensional comparison with the 2026 Camry. They indicate that Lexus has pursued a roomier, more substantial luxury-sedan footprint.

Different missions, not simply different trim levels
The Camry is Toyota’s mainstream midsize sedan and is sold only with hybrid power for 2026. The ES 350h is intended to sit in a luxury sedan category. That distinction affects the design brief: Lexus emphasizes a more premium environment and a larger body, while Toyota emphasizes accessible pricing, efficiency and a wide range of practical trims.
Lexus positioning supports an expectation of more upscale materials, presentation and comfort tuning, but the official specifications supplied here do not include independent measurements of cabin noise, seat comfort, ride quality or rear-seat legroom. It is reasonable to test-drive both cars, on the same roads and with the same passengers, before treating those subjective differences as decisive.
Practical cabin checks before buying
- Set the driver’s seat for your normal position, then sit behind it to check knee and foot space.
- Bring the child seats, booster seats or mobility equipment you actually use; brochure seat counts do not reveal installation ease.
- Test the trunk with your regular luggage, stroller or work equipment.
- Drive over the roughest surface near the dealership and listen for rattles, tire impact and suspension response.
- Confirm that the 14-inch Lexus display or the Camry’s installed screen is positioned where you can read it without excessive reach or glare.
Safety and driver assistance
Camry: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
Toyota says the 2026 Camry includes Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. The listed functions are:
- Pre-collision detection with pedestrian detection
- Full-speed-range dynamic radar cruise control
- Lane-departure alert with steering assist
- Lane tracing assist
- Road-sign assist
- Automatic high beams
Availability, behavior and adjustment options can vary by trim or market, so review the window sticker and owner’s manual for the exact car.

ES 350h: Lexus Safety System+ 4.0
Lexus identifies Safety System+ 4.0 for the ES 350h. The supplied specifications establish the system name but do not provide a complete feature list that can be matched one-for-one against Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Do not interpret the higher version number as proof that the Lexus is safer, and do not assume the two suites operate identically.
How to compare the systems responsibly
Ask the dealer to demonstrate the alerts and settings in the exact trim you are considering. Check whether adaptive-cruise behavior, lane-centering assistance, pedestrian detection and speed-sign recognition suit your driving. Driver-assistance systems are aids, not substitutes for attention, braking or supervision. No claim about crash-test superiority is established by the manufacturer feature names alone.
Infotainment and daily usability
Lexus interface
The ES 350h lists a 14-inch Lexus Interface display. A large screen can make navigation and menus easier to see, but size alone does not determine usability. Check touch reach, physical controls, voice recognition and smartphone integration during a demonstration.
Camry equipment varies by trim
The supplied Camry specifications do not state a single screen size or identical infotainment package for every trim. Confirm the equipment on the specific LE, SE, XLE or XSE you are pricing. A lower-priced Camry may deliver the core functions you need, while a higher trim may add convenience features that reduce the apparent equipment gap with the ES.
Camry XLE versus ES 350h: the most common cross-shopping decision
The Camry XLE is a sensible comparison when you want a more comfort-oriented Toyota without paying the ES entry price. It remains a mainstream sedan, and its published FWD and AWD estimates are 46 mpg combined. The ES 350h Premium FWD also carries a 46 mpg combined estimate, but starts at roughly $51,000 and brings Lexus’s luxury positioning and 14-inch display.

| Question | Camry XLE | ES 350h Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Primary advantage | Lower cost with strong efficiency and hybrid availability | Luxury-sedan positioning, larger redesign and higher system output |
| Published combined rating | 46 mpg FWD; 46 mpg AWD in Toyota’s brochure | 46 mpg FWD; 44 mpg AWD |
| Power figure published | Part of Camry’s up-to-232-hp range; trim-specific figure not stated here | 244 net combined horsepower |
| Best reason to choose it | You want comfort-oriented Camry equipment without a $21,000-plus base-price jump | You specifically want the Lexus experience and accept the higher purchase price |
Do not choose between these two solely on the combined mpg number: it is identical for the published FWD estimates. The decision is primarily about budget, brand position, cabin design, equipment and how much value you place on the ES’s additional output and larger body.
Warranty and ownership risk
Camry hybrid-battery coverage
Toyota states that, from the 2020 model year forward, every Toyota hybrid battery warranty covers 10 years from the date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. That is a specific, published battery term for Toyota hybrids and is an important part of the Camry’s ownership calculation.
What to verify for the Lexus
A directly comparable ES 350h battery-warranty term is not established in the supplied specifications. Before signing, ask for the written warranty booklet applicable to your country, model year and vehicle identification number. Confirm battery coverage, hybrid-component coverage, mileage limits, time limits, transferability and exclusions rather than assuming Lexus and Toyota terms are identical.

Which sedan fits each buyer?
Choose the 2026 Camry Hybrid when:
- Your purchase budget is near $30,000 rather than $51,000.
- You want the highest published fuel economy, especially the LE FWD’s 51 mpg combined estimate.
- You prefer a mainstream sedan with every trim using a hybrid powertrain.
- You want FWD or electronic on-demand AWD without moving into a luxury price bracket.
- The clearly stated 10-year/150,000-mile Toyota hybrid-battery warranty is important to your risk calculation.
- You can accept that the Camry is not positioned as a luxury vehicle.
Choose the 2026 Lexus ES 350h when:
- You have room in your budget for an approximately $51,000 starting price before options.
- You want a luxury-positioned sedan rather than the lowest-cost route to hybrid efficiency.
- The 14-inch Lexus Interface display and ES design appeal to you in an actual test drive.
- You value 244 net combined horsepower and can accept 46 mpg FWD or 44 mpg AWD.
- You want the larger redesigned ES footprint and are satisfied after checking parking, garage and rear-seat fit.
- You are prepared to verify the exact warranty and equipment package for your market.
Think twice about either one when:
- You need a crossover’s cargo height, ground clearance or easy rear loading.
- You regularly tow or carry loads beyond what a midsize sedan is designed to handle.
- You are choosing based on assumed quietness, reliability or safety superiority that has not been independently demonstrated.
- You have not driven the exact wheel, tire, drivetrain and trim combination you intend to buy.
A practical test-drive and purchase checklist
- Set your budget. Compare the $29,600 Camry starting MSRP with the Lexus figure applicable to your chosen ES trim, including destination, taxes and dealer-installed options.
- Pick the drivetrain first. Decide whether FWD’s efficiency or AWD’s additional traction better matches your climate and routes.
- Compare the EPA configuration. Use the correct Camry trim rating rather than the 51-mpg LE figure when evaluating an XLE, XSE or AWD car.
- Inspect the exact equipment. Verify screen size, seating materials, driver-assistance functions, wheels, tires and charging or connectivity features listed on the window sticker.
- Test the cabin. Check seating position, rear access, visibility, display reach, storage and trunk capacity with your own passengers and cargo.
- Drive comparable routes. Use city streets, highway ramps and rough pavement in both cars, and note—not assume—ride comfort, steering, wind noise and powertrain response.
- Read the warranty documents. Confirm battery and hybrid-component coverage for the exact VIN and region, especially for the ES.
- Get written quotes. Separate MSRP, destination, accessories, dealer fees, incentives, financing cost, taxes and registration so the price comparison is transparent.
Bottom line
The 2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid is the rational default for most value-focused shoppers: it starts about $21,000 below the Lexus, reaches a higher 51-mpg combined EPA estimate in LE FWD form and has a clearly published 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid-battery warranty. The 2026 Lexus ES 350h is worth considering when the purchase is intentionally a move into a larger, luxury-positioned sedan. It supplies 244 horsepower, a 14-inch display and Lexus presentation, but its 46-mpg FWD and 44-mpg AWD estimates do not beat the Camry’s most efficient versions. Buy the ES for the experience and equipment you can verify in person—not for an unproven promise of superior quietness, reliability or safety.
