For most everyday driving, leave a Lexus ES Hybrid in Normal. Switch to Eco when you accept gentler acceleration and less aggressive heating or cooling, use Sport when response and steering feel matter, and treat EV Drive Mode as a short, conditional low-speed tool rather than a permanent fuel-saving setting. Custom is useful only on grades equipped with it.
The exact controls depend on the car’s market, grade, generation and production date. The detailed instructions cited here apply to the Japan-market ES 300h manual group covering vehicles produced from July 2022 through May 2026. Lexus lists a separate ES 350h generation beginning in June 2026, as well as other manual groups. Identify your vehicle first, then confirm the wording and available settings in its own manual.

Identify your ES Hybrid before changing settings
“Lexus ES Hybrid” does not describe one universal set of menus. Lexus Japan’s owner-manual index groups manuals by production period and powertrain, and the index shows different documentation for different vehicles. The detailed mode descriptions used in this guide are from the Japan-market ES Hybrid manual for the July 2022–May 2026 production period. An ES 350h beginning with the June 2026 generation may use different labels or offer different equipment. Older US-market descriptions also should not be copied into a newer or Japan-market car. A historical US description of the seventh-generation ES, for example, lists its own Sport and Custom behavior, while the 2017 ES 300h has separate documentation. Use those pages as historical context, not as a button-by-button guide for another car.

On your vehicle, find the physical or console control labeled for drive-mode selection and watch the instrument display after each change. If a mode or option is not shown, your grade may not have that equipment. Do not force a setting through a menu that your manual does not list.
The practical starting point is simple:
- Normal: default balance for commuting, urban traffic and mixed conditions.
- Eco: a calmer accelerator and reduced climate-system demand when economy is more important than immediate response or maximum cabin comfort.
- Sport: sharper hybrid-system response and a different steering feel on the cited version.
- Custom: an equipment-dependent way to combine supported powertrain, chassis and climate behaviors.
- EV Drive Mode: brief, low-speed electric running when the car allows it; not a replacement for normal hybrid operation.
How the everyday modes differ

This is a behavior comparison, not a fuel-economy ranking. The cited manuals do not provide a tested percentage improvement for any mode, so no mode should be advertised as guaranteeing a particular saving.
Normal is the sensible default
The cited Lexus Japan manual describes Normal as balancing fuel economy, quietness and performance, and identifies it as appropriate for urban driving. That makes it the best baseline for judging whether another setting genuinely suits your route. It avoids the comfort compromises of Eco and the extra response of Sport without requiring you to manage a special condition.
Use Normal for a mixed commute, stop-and-go traffic, longer trips and days when passengers need predictable heating or cooling. It also gives the hybrid system its ordinary combined engine-and-motor operating strategy. Because the manual does not publish a mode-to-mode fuel-economy test, changing away from Normal should be based on a clear need—such as softer response, stronger acceleration or a brief electric-only maneuver—not on an assumed percentage benefit.
Eco changes two things you will notice
Gentler accelerator response
Eco mode softens throttle response. The car can still accelerate, but the pedal is less eager, which can make smooth starts easier in traffic and reduce accidental surges. Drivers who frequently need an immediate merge or who dislike a delayed-feeling pedal may prefer Normal instead.

Lower climate-system demand
The manual says Eco limits heating and cooling operation to encourage fuel-conscious driving. Lexus states this directly in its Japanese description: “またエアコン（暖房／冷房）の作動を抑え、燃費の向上を意識した走行に適しています。” The English meaning is that air-conditioner heating and cooling operation is suppressed and the mode is suitable for driving with fuel economy in mind. The original wording and mode explanation are in the Drive Mode Select Switch section of the ES Hybrid manual.
The trade-off is comfort. On a very hot or cold day, cabin temperature may matter more than the economy-oriented climate strategy. If your vehicle exposes climate controls that let you adjust the compromise, use them; otherwise, return to Normal when you need faster heating or cooling. The manual gives no universal fuel-saving percentage, so choose Eco for its behavior rather than expecting a guaranteed numerical result.

On the cited vehicle, Auto Glide Control can operate in Eco while the transmission is in D and the accelerator is nearly released. It is intended to let the car glide in a way that reduces unnecessary drive force during a coast-down.
Do not interpret that description as a promise that every lift-off becomes an electric glide. The manual lists operating exclusions, and the system may decide that the conditions are unsuitable. Traffic, grade, speed, battery state and other control logic can affect what you feel. Keep your normal following distance and braking habits; Auto Glide Control is an efficiency feature, not a reason to coast toward a hazard or to delay braking.
If you want to understand how it behaves, try Eco on a familiar, low-traffic road. Release the accelerator gradually in D and observe the display and vehicle response without changing your safety margin. If the behavior is inconsistent, that is not necessarily a fault—the system is conditional by design. The same manual page documents the exclusions alongside the Eco description.

Use Sport for response, not as an economy setting
Sport changes hybrid-system control for stronger acceleration and changes steering feel on the cited version. The result is a more immediate response when pulling into traffic, climbing a grade or simply enjoying a more alert connection between pedal input and vehicle movement.
Because Sport is designed around response, it is not the logical choice when your only goal is fuel economy. It may also make the car feel more active than you want during a long, relaxed commute. Select it when the benefit you want is acceleration or steering character, then return to Normal when that need ends.
Lexus USA’s historical seventh-generation ES description separates Sport S and Sport S+ and says Sport S+ can also alter steering and adaptive-damper behavior on equipped vehicles. Those details demonstrate why you should not assume that a Sport label has identical effects across markets or generations. Check your own manual before expecting a particular chassis adjustment.
Custom is worthwhile only when your grade supports it
Custom mode is equipment-dependent. On versions fitted with the relevant hardware and software, it can let you choose supported powertrain, chassis and climate behaviors instead of accepting one factory bundle. For example, a driver might want a more responsive powertrain with a less aggressive climate strategy, but the exact combinations depend on what the vehicle exposes.
Do not search for Custom if the switch or display does not offer it. The cited Japan-market manual explicitly makes availability dependent on grade and options. A Custom menu described for a US-market ES or another model year may contain different choices, so importing a menu path from an online video can lead to settings that simply do not exist in your car.

When Custom is available, change one category at a time and drive the same route in Normal and Custom. That makes it easier to identify whether the difference you feel comes from the powertrain, steering or climate setting. Record your preferred combination in the vehicle’s own menu if it provides a memory or confirmation screen; otherwise, note it so you can restore it after another driver changes the mode.

What it does
EV Drive Mode commands the car to use electricity from the traction battery and electric motor without running the gasoline engine, while the system determines that conditions are suitable. It can be useful for a short, quiet departure from a parking area, a low-speed maneuver or a brief approach through a residential street.
Why it may refuse to engage
The manual says EV mode may be unavailable when the hybrid system is too hot or too cold, the engine is warming up, the battery charge is low, vehicle speed is high, acceleration demand is substantial, the road is steep or windshield defogging is active. These are normal operating limits, not evidence that the button has failed.
Once engaged, EV mode can cancel automatically if charge falls, speed rises or you request more acceleration. Defogging needs can also end it. Keep driving inputs gentle and watch the instrument display rather than assuming the engine will remain off.
How far it can go in EV mode
For the covered Japan-market vehicle, Lexus describes EV-mode travel as several hundred metres to about one kilometre. That is approximate, vehicle-specific guidance—not an ES-wide range claim. Temperature, battery charge, speed, grade and pedal demand can shorten it, and the manual’s publication page does not establish a universal distance for other years or markets. Does EV mode save fuel?
Not necessarily. Lexus warns that frequent EV-mode use can worsen fuel economy because the normal hybrid system is optimized for efficient operation when it combines the engine and electric motor. Drawing down the battery in a low-speed EV segment can simply cause the system to run the engine later to restore charge. Use EV mode for a specific quiet or low-speed situation, not as a routine shortcut to a guaranteed fuel saving.
A practical daily-setting decision guide
Choose Normal when conditions are mixed
Select Normal when your route includes city streets, faster roads, passengers with different comfort needs or frequent changes in traffic. It is the cited manual’s balanced reference point.
Choose Eco when you can accept a calmer car
Select Eco for steady commuting when you are comfortable with gentler pedal response and reduced heating or cooling demand. It is most sensible when smoothness and an economy-focused climate strategy matter more than instant response.

Select Sport before a route where stronger acceleration or a different steering feel is useful. Change back after the situation ends rather than treating Sport as an all-purpose setting.
Choose Custom only after checking the equipment list
Use Custom if your grade provides it and you have a clear preferred combination. If the menu is absent, there is nothing to activate and no accessory is required.
Choose EV Drive Mode for a brief, suitable maneuver
Try EV mode at low speed with a warm, sufficiently charged system and modest acceleration demand. If it refuses or cancels, continue normally; do not repeatedly press the control while driving or attempt to force the mode during defogging, steep climbs or high-speed travel.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Assuming every ES Hybrid has the same menu: verify production date, market, grade and powertrain in the owner-manual index.
- Expecting Eco to provide a measured percentage saving: the cited manual gives no quantified improvement. Judge it by response and climate behavior.
- Using EV mode for every short trip: frequent use can reduce overall economy because normal hybrid control is designed for efficient combined operation.
- Interpreting an EV refusal as a fault: check temperature, charge, speed, acceleration demand, grade, engine warm-up and defogging conditions first.
- Copying a Sport or Custom setup from another market: historical US descriptions and newer generations may have different equipment and menu choices.
- Reducing following distance while experimenting with gliding: Auto Glide Control is conditional and never replaces normal braking and hazard awareness.
How to make a setting change safely
- Confirm your exact ES model, production period, market and grade, then open the matching owner manual.
- With the car stationary or in the situation specified by your manual, use the labeled Drive Mode Select control.
- Confirm the selected mode on the instrument display before moving away.
- Drive normally for several minutes and note only the changes you can actually feel: pedal response, cabin comfort, steering character or EV availability.
- Return to Normal if the setting does not suit traffic, weather, passengers or visibility.
- For EV mode, stop trying to activate it if the car refuses or cancels; the system may be enforcing one of its normal operating exclusions.
No special accessory, diagnostic tool or add-on is required to understand these settings. The authoritative references are the manual for your exact vehicle and the controls installed in that vehicle.
