For most F-150 owners who want to remove the factory nose-down rake, a leveling kit is the lower-cost, lower-risk change. Choose a lift kit when you need substantially more ground clearance, room for larger tires, or a suspension built for demanding off-road travel. Neither label guarantees a particular ride, tire size, or price: those depend on your F-150’s model year, cab, drivetrain, trim, wheel package, the kit’s actual components, and installation.
What a leveling kit and a lift kit actually change
An unloaded F-150 commonly sits lower at the front than at the rear. Manufacturers use that rake for payload and towing behavior, but many owners prefer a more level appearance. A leveling kit primarily raises the front suspension so the nose sits closer to the rear height. Guidance from Steeda describes common front lift amounts of about 1.75 to 2.5 inches, although the number varies by application and kit design.

A lift kit raises the truck more broadly. Depending on the design, it can increase front and rear ride height, replace or relocate suspension components, and include geometry-correction parts. “Lift kit” does not identify one standard height or component list; a small spacer system and a fully engineered suspension system can both be sold under that name.
| Question | Leveling kit | Lift kit |
|---|---|---|
| Primary change | Usually a front-height increase to reduce factory rake | A broader increase in vehicle ride height; front and rear changes depend on the kit |
| Typical published height context | Steeda cites approximately 1.75–2.5 inches at the front | No single height; the kit determines the result |
| Best-matched use | Daily driving, towing, a leveler stance, and light off-road clearance | Greater overall clearance, demanding off-road use, and a build that needs more tire capacity |
| Parts-only cost estimates | About $100–$250 in one published guide; another gives $100–$300 | About $1,000–$4,000 in one guide; another gives $1,000–$5,000 or more |
| Published installation estimate | About $100–$300, separate from parts, in the Steeda estimate | About $500–$1,500, separate from parts, in the Steeda estimate |
Those figures are indicative published estimates, not a current nationwide price list. A local shop may quote more or less based on labor rates, rust, seized fasteners, alignment equipment, and the work required to correct suspension geometry.

Which kit fits your F-150’s intended use?
Choose leveling when stance and modest clearance are the goal
A leveling kit is usually the sensible starting point if your main objective is visual balance rather than maximum articulation. Raising the front can make the truck look less nose-down when unloaded and may create additional space around the front tire. It is also the smaller intervention for an F-150 that remains a commuter, tow vehicle, or occasional gravel-road truck.
Leveling is not a substitute for a purpose-built off-road suspension. A front spacer or other leveling component does not automatically provide longer-travel shocks, additional droop, stronger control arms, or protection for driveline and steering components. If your trails include deep ruts, rocks, repeated suspension impacts, or high-speed washboard, evaluate the complete suspension system rather than the advertised height alone.
Choose a lift when clearance is the limiting factor
A lift kit becomes more relevant when the truck’s breakover, approach, departure, or underbody clearance limits the terrain you want to drive. More height can also be necessary for a tire-and-wheel package that cannot be accommodated by a modest front increase. Larger kits may include shocks, springs, control arms, drop brackets, bump-stop changes, or other components intended to keep the suspension operating within a usable range.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMore height is not automatically better. A tall truck has a higher center of gravity, which can reduce high-speed stability and increase body roll. Larger tires add unsprung and rotating mass, rolling resistance, and aerodynamic drag. The practical result can be slower steering response, more braking demand, and a different towing feel even when the installation is mechanically sound.
Ride quality, handling, and suspension geometry
Why “rides like stock” is not a universal promise
Ride quality depends on spring rate, shock valving, spacer location, control-arm angle, tire construction, wheel offset, and the amount of available travel. A simple leveling component may preserve much of the truck’s original spring and shock behavior, but it can still change suspension angles and the way the front suspension moves through its travel. A lift that replaces several components may work very well, yet its ride will reflect the new springs, shocks, and geometry.

The available guidance does not provide controlled, kit-by-kit ride testing for every F-150 configuration. Treat claims such as “factory ride,” “no handling change,” or “rides rough” as product-specific statements that require supporting details, not as conclusions that apply to every kit.
Handling effects to monitor
- Center of gravity: Raising the body increases leverage during cornering and can make body roll more noticeable.
- Alignment: Camber, caster, and toe can move outside the desired range after suspension height changes. Both leveling and lift installations should be followed by a professional alignment.
- Steering and control-arm angles: Excessive angle can affect ball-joint and bushing operating positions, steering feel, and available travel.
- Driveline angles: On four-wheel-drive trucks, a larger height change can alter front axle and driveshaft angles. The exact threshold depends on the truck and kit.
- Tire behavior: A heavier or more aggressive tire can add noise, rolling resistance, and steering effort independently of the suspension hardware.
After installation, the truck should track straight, return the steering wheel toward center after a turn, and show even tire wear. Pulling, a crooked steering wheel, vibration, clunks, or rubbing are reasons to stop treating the modification as cosmetic and have the work inspected.
Tire and wheel clearance: what can and cannot be promised
Both types of kit can create more room at the front, but tire fitment is specific to the truck and wheel package. Model year, two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, cab and bed configuration, trim, factory suspension, wheel diameter, wheel width, offset, tire section width, sidewall shape, and steering position all matter. Even the same nominal tire diameter can behave differently between manufacturers.
Published dealer guidance uses representative examples of up to about 33-inch tires for some leveling applications and 35-inch or larger tires for some lift applications. Those are general examples, not guarantees for every F-150. A tire that clears the inner suspension at ride height can still contact the fender liner, crash bar, mud flap, or control arm at full steering lock or when the suspension compresses.
Use this fitment checklist before ordering
- Record the truck’s model year, cab, engine, drivetrain, trim, axle configuration, and factory wheel size.
- Identify the exact kit part number and its stated front and rear height for that configuration.
- Confirm the wheel’s diameter, width, offset, and backspacing, not just its appearance.
- Ask the installer to check clearance at full left and right lock and through suspension compression.
- Check whether the kit requires trimming, different bump stops, control arms, brake-line changes, or a different spare tire.
- Plan the alignment after the final tire and wheel package is installed, not before.
Do not order a tire solely because an online listing says “fits a leveled F-150” or “fits a lifted F-150.” That wording can omit the configuration details that determine whether rubbing occurs.

Published price ranges
Steeda’s guide, updated April 17, 2026, estimates leveling-kit parts at $100–$250 and lift-kit parts at $1,000–$4,000. It separately estimates professional installation at $100–$300 for a leveling kit and $500–$1,500 for a lift kit. Porcaro Ford gives a somewhat wider estimate of $100–$300 for a leveling kit and $1,000–$5,000 or more for a lift kit, excluding installation.
| Budget item | Leveling-kit planning range | Lift-kit planning range | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parts | $100–$250 in Steeda’s estimate; $100–$300 in Porcaro Ford’s estimate | $1,000–$4,000 in Steeda’s estimate; $1,000–$5,000 or more in Porcaro Ford’s estimate | Published estimates; exact components and height change the price |
| Professional installation | $100–$300 in Steeda’s estimate | $500–$1,500 in Steeda’s estimate | Separate from parts; local labor and truck condition vary |
| Alignment | Required after installation | Required after installation | Obtain a local quote; not included in the ranges unless the shop says so |
| Additional work | Possible tire, wheel, trimming, or geometry-related work | Possible control-arm, shock, brake-line, driveline, trimming, or tire-and-wheel work | Not stated as a universal cost; depends on the exact kit and truck |
Build an itemized quote
Ask the shop to separate the kit, installation labor, alignment, tire mounting and balancing, replacement hardware, and any trimming or geometry-correction parts. Confirm whether the quote includes a post-installation inspection and whether a recheck is recommended after the suspension settles. A low parts price can become an expensive project if the truck needs seized-bolt extraction, new control arms, or a tire package that was not included in the original plan.
For a lift, also ask which shocks and springs are included, whether the advertised height is measured at the front, rear, or both, and whether the kit changes the truck’s load-carrying or towing recommendations. The cheapest kit is not necessarily the least expensive ownership choice if it requires multiple corrective parts later.
Installation and post-installation checks
Before the truck goes on the lift
- Verify the kit’s part number against the truck’s exact year, drivetrain, trim, and suspension.
- Inspect existing ball joints, tie-rod ends, control-arm bushings, shocks, wheel bearings, and brake lines.
- Measure current hub-to-fender heights so the final change can be documented.
- Discuss tire and wheel clearance with the actual wheel offset and tire dimensions.
- Confirm whether the installer is qualified for any warranty requirements that apply to the selected kit.
During installation
The installer should use the manufacturer’s torque specifications and installation sequence, preserve brake-line slack through the full steering and suspension range, and check that springs, spacers, and retainers seat correctly. On a four-wheel-drive truck, the shop should inspect axle, driveshaft, and steering angles rather than assuming a small advertised height has no geometric effect.
After installation
- Settle the suspension according to the kit maker’s instructions and remeasure ride height.
- Perform a four-wheel alignment and obtain the before-and-after printout.
- Check tire clearance at full steering lock and under compression.
- Road-test for pulling, vibration, steering-center change, clunks, and unusual tire noise.
- Retorque accessible fasteners as specified by the kit maker and inspect for contact marks after the first drives.
An alignment is not optional finishing work. Porcaro Ford says both leveling and lift installations require alignment, and Ford Performance recommends checking alignment for the specified leveling kits covered by its warranty document.

Warranty: read the exact product and model-year limits
Ford Performance’s official warranty document, revised February 14, 2021, addresses specified Fox Suspension leveling kits M-18000-F15A and M-18000-R on F-150 model years 2015–2019. It says that installation of those specified warranted kits by an authorized installer will not void the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, subject to the document’s installation and registration requirements. The document also states that concerns not caused by the Ford Performance parts remain eligible under the vehicle warranty’s terms.
“Installation of these select Ford Performance warranted suspension leveling kits by an authorized installer will NOT void your New Vehicle Limited Warranty.”
That statement is narrow. It does not establish coverage for an arbitrary aftermarket leveling kit, a lift kit, a 2020-or-newer F-150, an unlisted installer, or damage caused by a modification. Keep the invoice, installer details, registration confirmation, alignment record, and the kit instructions. If a warranty question arises, ask the dealer to identify the failed component and the applicable warranty provision rather than relying on a general claim that any suspension modification voids everything.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by advertised height alone
“Two-inch leveling kit” does not tell you whether the kit uses a top-mounted spacer, a spring change, a strut assembly, or another design. It also does not tell you the rear height, shock requirements, or final geometry. Compare the component list and installation requirements, not just the number on the package.

Assuming a larger tire will fit without rubbing
Nominal tire diameter is only one part of clearance. Wheel offset, tire width, steering angle, suspension compression, and liner shape can create contact. Verify the exact combination with the installer before purchase.

Skipping alignment because the truck drives straight
A truck can feel normal while toe or camber is outside the preferred range. Uneven wear may appear later. Schedule the alignment immediately after the suspension work and retain the measurement sheet.
Ignoring existing worn parts
New height can expose play in a ball joint, bushing, tie rod, or wheel bearing. Replacing a worn component during the installation is usually more predictable than diagnosing a new clunk after the truck leaves the shop.
Budgeting only for the kit
Labor, alignment, tire mounting, balancing, replacement hardware, trimming, and geometry-correction parts can materially change the total. Request an itemized estimate before authorizing work.
Expecting a lift to improve every driving characteristic
Additional clearance can make difficult terrain easier, but a higher center of gravity, heavier tires, and altered geometry can change cornering, braking, steering effort, fuel consumption, and towing feel. Decide which capability matters most before selecting height.
A practical decision framework
Select a leveling kit if most of these statements are true
- You mainly want to reduce the unloaded front rake.
- The truck is used for commuting, towing, hauling, and light off-road travel.
- You need only a modest increase in front clearance.
- You are prepared to verify tire fitment rather than assuming a published size applies.
- You want the lower parts and labor estimates associated with a smaller modification.
Select a lift kit if most of these statements are true
- Underbody, approach, departure, or breakover clearance limits your trails.
- You need substantially more overall height or a larger tire package.
- You accept higher parts and installation costs and a more involved alignment and inspection process.
- You are willing to address shocks, control arms, driveline angles, brake lines, and other geometry-related requirements.
- You understand that more height can increase body roll and change on-road behavior.
Pause before modifying if these conditions apply
- The truck is still under a warranty whose modification terms you have not read.
- The proposed kit does not list your exact model year and drivetrain.
- The wheels and tires are already close to rubbing at full lock.
- Existing suspension or steering parts show play, leaks, or damaged bushings.
- The quote does not identify alignment, additional parts, and labor separately.
Bottom line for an F-150 owner
A leveling kit is generally the economical answer for correcting the factory rake and gaining modest front clearance while keeping the truck’s everyday role intact. A lift kit is the appropriate direction when serious off-road clearance or a substantially larger tire package justifies the added height, parts, labor, and geometry work. The right choice is not determined by the words “leveling” or “lift”; verify the exact kit, fitment, alignment plan, total installed cost, and warranty conditions for your specific F-150.
