This is therefore not a normal “which test drive feels better?” comparison. One vehicle has a documented Malaysian proposition; the other has overseas data but no announced Malaysian commercial terms.
What the LEPAS L4 is—and what is still unknown
LEPAS is a Chery Group brand positioned around “elegant mobility.” Its international brand release describes it as the “Preferred brand for elegant mobility life.” The L4 is the brand’s compact SUV and has begun commercialisation outside Malaysia.

LEPAS reported that more than 500 L4 vehicles were shipped to South Africa on January 26, 2026. The published vehicle measurements are 4,400 mm long, 1,820 mm wide and 1,635 mm high, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase. Those figures establish the size of the overseas vehicle, not the dimensions of a future Malaysian derivative.
For Malaysia, the critical missing facts are the launch date, approved specification, grade walk, price, taxes, warranty, maintenance schedule, parts supply and dealer coverage. Until LEPAS Malaysia publishes them, a Malaysian buyer cannot calculate an on-the-road cost or compare like-for-like equipment with the Corolla Cross.

The January 2, 2026 Peninsular Malaysia price-list PDF confirms those figures and identifies the 1.8V as a 1,798 cc model. The amounts are published transaction references, not a promise that every dealer promotion, financing package or accessory bundle will be identical. Insurance is excluded, and prices can change, so verify the current figure before placing a booking.
How to interpret the RM7,000 hybrid premium
The listed Hybrid Electric costs RM7,000 more than the 1.8V, while the HEV GR Sport costs RM8,000 more than the standard Hybrid Electric and RM15,000 more than the 1.8V. Those are purchase-price differences only. They do not prove how quickly a hybrid premium will be recovered through fuel use, because recovery depends on annual distance, traffic, fuel prices, financing and maintenance.

What the LEPAS L4 costs overseas
The official South African model page lists three petrol trims:

These are South African rand prices for that market. Do not convert them into ringgit and present the result as a Malaysian estimate. Import duties, local taxes, homologation, shipping, equipment, exchange rates, distributor costs and warranty provision can all change the final Malaysian price. The trim names and equipment may also differ.
The South African page describes a 1.5L engine range and combined fuel-consumption figures of 6.9–7.0 L/100 km. The 2026 specification sheet gives all grades a 51-litre fuel tank. Neither the fuel figures nor the tank capacity should be assumed to apply to a Malaysian car until a local specification is released.
Powertrains: known local choices versus an overseas petrol range
Corolla Cross 1.8V petrol
Toyota’s Malaysian 1.8V specification describes a 1.8L, four-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC engine with Dual VVT-i. The price-list data identifies the displacement as 1,798 cc. This is the least expensive locally listed Corolla Cross and the simplest price reference for comparing a future L4.
Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric and HEV GR Sport
Malaysia also has a Hybrid Electric and an HEV GR Sport. Toyota publishes their prices, which gives buyers a choice between the lower entry price of the petrol car and two hybrid grades without waiting for a new model launch. The available data does not establish a fuel-economy result or payback period for either hybrid variant, so those should be assessed from your own driving pattern rather than assumed.

LEPAS L4 petrol grades documented in South Africa
The cited L4 range consists of a naturally aspirated AMUR rated at 80 kW and 148 Nm, plus turbocharged JAVAN and PANTERA grades rated at 108 kW and 225 Nm. All three are described as 1.5L petrol models. LEPAS is also developing new-energy vehicles globally, but no Malaysian L4 electrified specification is established by the available local information.
That distinction matters. A Malaysian buyer deciding between a Corolla Cross Hybrid and an L4 cannot treat the South African petrol figures as evidence that the L4 will launch with the same engine, gearbox, emissions calibration or fuel economy.
Size, cabin packaging and luggage space
Published L4 dimensions and cargo volume
The overseas L4 measures 4,400 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width and 1,635 mm in height. Its 2,700 mm wheelbase is the distance between the axles and is often more useful for understanding cabin packaging than exterior length alone.
The 2026 specification sheet lists 458 litres of boot capacity with the rear seats upright and 1,284 litres with them folded. Those are useful planning figures for luggage, a stroller or occasional bulky loads, but measurement methods can differ between manufacturers. Check whether a Malaysian car retains the same floor, spare-wheel arrangement and seat design.
Why a hard space verdict would be premature
The available Malaysian Corolla Cross material in this comparison establishes price, displacement and warranty, but not a directly comparable official boot-volume and dimensional table. It would therefore be misleading to declare the L4 roomier or smaller than the Corolla Cross from the overseas numbers alone. If rear-seat legroom, loading height or boot width is decisive, inspect both cars in person and measure the items you actually carry.

Ownership support and warranty
What Toyota documents today
Toyota’s 1.8V specification page states: “5 years vehicle warranty from the date of first registration with unlimited mileage.” That gives a Malaysian buyer a clearly stated coverage period and mileage policy. Confirm the detailed exclusions, servicing requirements and terms in the purchase documentation, because a headline warranty does not describe every covered component.
The Corolla Cross is already sold as a Toyota Malaysia product, so buyers can obtain a local quotation, arrange a test drive and discuss servicing before committing. The exact dealer experience still varies by outlet, but the retail channel exists now.
What has not been documented for the L4 in Malaysia
No Malaysian L4 warranty duration, mileage limit, service interval, parts policy or dealer network is stated in the available LEPAS Malaysia information. That is not proof that support will be inadequate; it means the terms are not yet available for a buyer to verify.
For a new brand, ask for written answers on parts lead times, roadside assistance, accident repair capability, software updates, battery coverage if an electrified version appears, and what happens if a distributor changes. Do not rely on a South African warranty document as a Malaysian promise.

Resale value and information risk
Resale is impossible to forecast responsibly for the L4 before its Malaysian launch. There is no local transaction history, used-car supply, warranty record or distributor track record to analyse. Overseas demand may provide context, but it does not establish Malaysian residual values.

The Corolla Cross carries lower information risk because the model is already priced and supported locally. That does not guarantee a particular resale price; depreciation still depends on condition, mileage, accident history, market supply and future Toyota pricing. It does mean you can make the purchase with more of the relevant ownership facts in hand.
Which buyer should choose the Corolla Cross?
- You need a vehicle during the current buying window. The Corolla Cross has published Malaysian prices and an established sales channel.
- You want a defined warranty. Toyota states five years from first registration with unlimited mileage for the 1.8V specification.
- You want powertrain choice now. You can select petrol, Hybrid Electric or HEV GR Sport grades rather than waiting for an unannounced L4 configuration.
- You need predictable budgeting. The RM133,800, RM140,800 and RM148,800 references let you calculate deposit, financing and insurance separately.
- You are cautious about launch risk. Local parts, servicing and resale questions are less open-ended for an established model.
Who should wait for the LEPAS L4?
- You can postpone your purchase. Waiting only makes sense if your current vehicle remains reliable and you can tolerate an unknown launch schedule.
- You are drawn to the L4’s newer design or technology positioning. LEPAS’s brand is built around “elegant mobility,” and the overseas trim range may appeal to buyers seeking something less familiar.
- You will compare after local facts arrive. Wait for an official Malaysian price, specification, warranty and service plan instead of deciding from rand prices.
- You accept first-launch uncertainty. Early buyers may face less established parts logistics and fewer used-market references than Corolla Cross owners.
A practical checklist before committing to either SUV
- Set a total budget. For the Corolla Cross, start with the published on-the-road price without insurance, then add insurance, financing costs, registration-related expenses and accessories.
- Choose the powertrain based on your driving. Compare your urban traffic, highway distance and annual mileage; do not assume a hybrid premium automatically pays for itself.
- Verify the exact model year and equipment. Ask the dealer for the written specification, safety equipment, infotainment functions, wheel and tyre details and spare-wheel arrangement.
- Inspect the cabin with your own passengers. Sit in the rear seats, check child-seat access and load your largest regular item into the boot.
- Read warranty conditions. Confirm coverage start date, mileage policy, maintenance requirements, exclusions and transfer rules.
- Price ownership items separately. Toyota’s price list names a rear digital video recorder as an optional accessory. If you want a Corolla Cross dash cam or rear recorder, confirm vehicle-year and trim compatibility before buying.
- If considering the L4, wait for Malaysian documentation. Request the official price, approved engine, fuel-consumption test standard, warranty booklet, service schedule, dealer list and parts-support commitments.
- Get written, comparable quotations. A low headline price can exclude insurance, accessories, financing fees or mandatory packages. Compare the same items on both quotations.
Common mistakes in this comparison
Converting rand directly into ringgit
Currency conversion ignores tax, shipping, equipment and distributor costs. The South African L4 prices are useful only as market-specific reference points.
Assuming overseas trim names will be sold here
AMUR, JAVAN and PANTERA are the published South African grades. Malaysia may receive different names, equipment or even a different powertrain.

Value requires a local price and a comparable specification. Until LEPAS Malaysia announces both, the L4 cannot be ranked against the Corolla Cross on Malaysian value.
Treating a global new-energy plan as a local hybrid guarantee
LEPAS’s global development of new-energy vehicles does not confirm that a Malaysian L4 will be electrified, nor does it establish battery warranty or charging support.
Bottom-line buying advice
For a Malaysian buyer shopping now, choose the Toyota Corolla Cross. Its RM133,800 1.8V, RM140,800 Hybrid Electric and RM148,800 HEV GR Sport prices are published locally, and Toyota states a five-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty for the 1.8V. You can evaluate a real quotation and arrange local support immediately.
Keep the LEPAS L4 on a watch list rather than treating it as a confirmed bargain. Its South African launch proves that the model is progressing internationally, with documented dimensions, cargo capacity and petrol trims, but LEPAS Malaysia has not announced the information needed for a Malaysian value judgement. Revisit the comparison when an official local price, specification, warranty and service network are available.
