Lease if you want the right to use a vehicle for a defined term and mileage and are comfortable returning it or buying it under the contract. Finance if you want to own the vehicle after repaying a loan. Compare the complete cost, not the advertised monthly payment. Your annual mileage, intended ownership period, cash available at signing, tolerance for end-of-term charges and plans for a trade-in can change which option is more suitable.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes a lease as “an agreement to use a vehicle, new or used, for a certain number of months and miles.” The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) gives the complementary warning: “Know your total cost, not just the monthly payment.” Read the written offer and final contract before committing.

Leasing and financing buy different things
With an auto loan, you purchase the car. Each payment normally covers part of the amount borrowed and a finance charge. When the loan is fully repaid, you own the vehicle, although you remain responsible for maintenance, insurance, taxes and other ownership costs.

Side-by-side comparison
| Decision axis | Leasing | Financing with an auto loan |
|---|---|---|
| What payments buy | Vehicle depreciation during the lease, plus rent charges and applicable taxes and fees | Repayment of the amount financed, plus finance charges |
| End result | Return the vehicle or exercise a purchase option if the contract provides one | Own the vehicle after the loan is paid |
| Mileage | Usually limited by contract; excess miles can trigger charges | No contractual lease mileage limit; high mileage can reduce resale or trade value |
| Condition and maintenance | Excess wear or damage, missing equipment, maintenance and insurance terms can add cost at return | You bear the costs as owner; wear mainly affects resale or trade value |
| Early exit | Early termination can be expensive and you generally cannot simply hand back the car and stop paying | You can sell or trade, but the loan payoff and vehicle value determine equity or negative equity |
| Monthly payment | Often lower for the same vehicle, but that does not establish a lower total cost | May be higher while building ownership; a longer term can increase total interest and the risk of owing more than the car is worth |
This is general consumer guidance, not a quote or personalized financial advice. Actual terms vary by vehicle, lender, location, borrower and date.
How the total cost is built
Loan costs
For financing, start with the negotiated vehicle price rather than a payment target. The amount financed can include the price after negotiated discounts, taxes, title and registration charges, dealer fees, optional products and any trade-in balance rolled into the deal, less your down payment or trade credit. The APR and loan term determine the finance charge and scheduled payments. A longer term can make the payment look smaller while increasing the total repayment and extending the period in which you may owe more than the vehicle is worth.

Compare each offer using the same four figures: APR, term in months, amount financed and total of payments. A lender’s preapproval gives you a benchmark before you discuss dealer financing. The CFPB explains financing channels in its guide to dealer-arranged and bank financing.
Lease costs
A lease quote should show the negotiated capitalized cost (the vehicle price used for the lease), the amount due at signing, lease term, annual mileage allowance, residual value, rent charge or money factor, taxes and every fee. The residual value is the contract’s estimate of the vehicle’s value at the end; it is not a promise about what the car will actually sell for later.
Potential additional charges include excess mileage, excess wear or damage, missing equipment, a disposition fee, maintenance obligations, insurance requirements and an early-termination amount. A purchase option may be available, but its price and conditions must appear in your agreement. CFPB notes that the negotiated price, residual value, down payment, trade-in value, rent charge, mileage limit and purchase option may be negotiable.
A CFPB lease-payment illustration
In a worked example, the CFPB uses a $20,000 negotiated price, an $8,000 residual value and a 36-month term. The implied depreciation is $12,000, or $333 per month before the rent charge, taxes and fees. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a current market price, typical payment or offer. Your contract can produce a different result because every input may differ.

Check mileage before choosing a lease
The CFPB says most leases restrict annual mileage to roughly 10,000–15,000 miles, while the actual allowance and excess-mile rate are contract terms. Estimate from odometer readings, commuting, school runs, vacations and likely changes in your routine rather than guessing.
- If your normal driving exceeds the stated allowance, request a higher-mileage lease quote and compare its cost with buying.
- Ask for the exact excess-mile charge and whether it applies to every mile above the allowance.
- Do not assume an overage will be inexpensive or negotiable at return.
- For a financed car, there is no lease mileage bill, but heavy use can reduce resale or trade value and increase maintenance needs.
Understand condition, maintenance and insurance obligations
A lease inspection can charge for wear or damage beyond the agreement’s standards, missing equipment and required maintenance. Keep service records, return all keys and accessories, and ask how the lessor defines ordinary wear before signing. Insurance coverage and deductible requirements also come from the contract; confirm them with your insurer.
With a loan, you still pay for maintenance, repairs, insurance and damage, but there is no lessor inspection bill when the loan ends. Poor condition can instead reduce the amount a dealer or private buyer will offer when you sell or trade.

When a lease schedule fits
CFPB consumer guidance describes a typical lease as lasting about two to four years. Leasing can fit a driver who expects to change vehicles on that schedule, can stay within the mileage allowance and does not need to build ownership. The lower scheduled payment sometimes associated with leasing must be weighed against the amount due at signing, recurring charges, return obligations and the fact that another vehicle decision follows at lease end.

When a loan horizon fits
The CFPB describes typical auto loans as lasting about three to seven years. Financing can fit someone who plans to keep the car well beyond the payoff date. After repayment, continued use does not require another monthly payment, although ownership costs continue. Select the shortest affordable term rather than extending the loan solely to reach a target payment; longer terms can raise total cost and increase negative-equity risk.
Step-by-step: compare financing offers
- Set the vehicle price first. Request a written out-the-door price showing the vehicle, installed options, taxes, title, registration and dealer fees. Keep financing out of this first negotiation so a low payment cannot conceal a higher price.
- Get independent preapproval. Ask banks or credit unions for offers and record the APR, term, amount financed, required down payment and total repayment. A preapproval is a comparison point, not an obligation to use that lender.
- Request the dealer’s written offer. Dealer-arranged financing can provide multiple offers, but a dealer may add a markup to the lender’s rate. Compare the dealer APR and total repayment with your preapproval, not merely with the dealer’s monthly figure.
- Normalize the terms. Compare offers for the same amount financed and term. If one quote includes optional products, a different down payment or rolled-in trade debt, remove or identify those differences before judging the APR.
- Calculate equity risk. Compare the balance you will owe over time with a realistic estimate of the vehicle’s value. A long term, small down payment or rolled-in negative equity can leave you owing more than the car is worth.
- Verify final documents. Before leaving, check that the credit contract shows the agreed APR, amount financed, payment schedule, term and total of payments. The FTC advises obtaining a signed copy of the completed contract and warns that financing may not be final if approval is still pending.
Step-by-step: evaluate a lease offer
- Confirm the capitalized cost. It should reflect the negotiated vehicle price and any permitted additions. Compare it with the same vehicle’s out-the-door purchase price; a payment-only discussion hides this essential input.
- Read the payment inputs. Record the term, annual mileage, residual value, rent charge or money factor, taxes, fees and amount due at signing. Ask which charges are refundable, which are not, and whether a deposit is at risk.
- Price your real mileage. Obtain the stated excess-mile rate and request a higher allowance if your estimate exceeds the standard. Compare the resulting total lease cost with a purchase financed on comparable terms.
- Ask about end-of-lease rules. Get the disposition fee, inspection process, wear standards, equipment requirements, return location and any purchase-option price in writing.
- Test the early-termination clause. Ask how the contract calculates an early payoff or termination, what credits are available, and whether a transfer is allowed. Do not assume returning the car ends the obligation.
- Read and keep the completed agreement. Verify every figure against the worksheet and leave with a signed copy. If approval or another condition remains pending, ask when the transaction becomes final.
Trade-ins and negative equity can change either choice
Before negotiating a replacement vehicle, request the existing lender’s payoff amount and obtain a realistic trade-in value. If the payoff exceeds the trade value, the difference is negative equity. A dealer may roll that amount into a new loan, increasing the amount financed, payment, interest and possibly the term. In a lease, the same shortfall can be added to the lease economics or required at signing, depending on the agreement.
Ask the seller to show separately: the old loan payoff, trade allowance, negative-equity amount, new vehicle price, amount financed or capitalized cost, and cash due. Do not judge the deal until you can see where the old balance went.

If you need to leave a lease early
A lease is a multi-year obligation. Early termination charges can be substantial because the lessor may seek the remaining depreciation, rent charges and other contract amounts, offset by specified credits or sale proceeds. Ask for a written payoff and read the termination section before surrendering the car. Simply returning the vehicle does not automatically cancel future obligations.

At the normal lease end
Your agreement determines whether you return the vehicle, buy it for the stated purchase-option amount, or use another permitted path. Budget for mileage, wear, missing-equipment and disposition charges that apply. Compare the purchase-option price with the car’s then-current market value only after confirming all taxes and fees; the contract controls what you owe.
If you need to exit a loan
You may sell or trade a financed vehicle, but the lender must be paid the outstanding payoff. If the vehicle is worth less than that payoff, you must cover the difference or arrange for it to be rolled into another transaction. If it is worth more, the equity can reduce the next purchase price or provide cash, subject to the final payoff calculation.
A practical decision framework
- Choose leasing for consideration when: your mileage fits the contract, you prefer changing vehicles on a two- to four-year schedule, you can meet return-condition rules, and you value use of a newer vehicle more than eventual ownership.
- Choose financing for consideration when: you expect to keep the vehicle beyond the loan term, drive unpredictable or high mileage, want freedom to modify or sell the car, or want payments to end with ownership.
- Pause and rework the deal when: the only reason an option appears affordable is a long term, a large amount due at signing, rolled-in negative equity or an unexplained fee.
These are conditional considerations, not universal rules. Vehicle depreciation, credit, taxes, insurance, incentives and local requirements can change the result.
Questions to ask before signing
- What is the negotiated out-the-door purchase price, separate from financing or leasing?
- For a loan, what are the APR, term, amount financed, total of payments and payoff process?
- For a lease, what are the capitalized cost, residual value, rent charge or money factor, mileage allowance, excess-mile rate and amount due at signing?
- Which taxes and fees are included, and which are payable later?
- What are the wear, damage, maintenance, insurance and missing-equipment standards?
- Is there a purchase option, and what exact price and conditions apply?
- What happens if approval is pending, the vehicle is damaged, or I need to end the agreement early?
- How is my trade payoff handled, and is any negative equity being added to the new obligation?
