1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the current diesel if you regularly tow a heavy trailer or want the greatest rated braked-towing margin. Choose the petrol if you need a 2WD D90, place more value on stated peak power, or your use does not justify a diesel-specific 4WD grade. The diesel’s published torque and towing ratings are higher, while the petrol is the only current choice with 2WD variants. Fuel figures reported for the range also favour diesel, but they are claimed combined-cycle results rather than a guarantee of what any owner will achieve.
This comparison applies to the Australian-market D90 range displayed by LDV Automotive Australia on 13 October 2026. Check the model year, grade and compliance plate on any vehicle or quote: the diesel has recently returned with a different engine, and older D90 specifications are not interchangeable with the current range.

The current LDV D90 powertrain choice
LDV’s Australian D90 range now combines a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with a newly returned 2.5-litre turbo-diesel. The current range page lists petrol versions in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, while diesel is shown in four-wheel-drive Executive and Luxe grades. That makes drivetrain availability an important part of the decision: a buyer who specifically wants a 2WD D90 is choosing petrol before comparing performance.

The diesel’s case is strongest when the vehicle will work hard. Its published peak torque and braked-towing rating exceed the petrol’s, which gives it more stated capacity for a large trailer. The petrol counters with a higher published peak-power figure and a broader choice of configurations. Neither engine is automatically the better answer for every urban, short-trip or mixed-use driver; those buyers should compare the exact grades, obtain written pricing and drive both relevant configurations.

The output and towing data in the table come from LDV Automotive Australia’s current range information. Read the numbers as published test claims with a defined comparison purpose, not as a promise about your commute, payload or trailer.
Why the diesel is the towing choice
Torque matters when a trailer is moving
For towing, the diesel’s advantage is its higher stated torque rather than its lower peak-power number. Torque is the twisting force available at the drivetrain. In practical terms, more torque can reduce the need for frequent downshifts when the D90 is carrying people and luggage while pulling a trailer, especially on grades or when accelerating into traffic. That does not make the diesel immune to speed, temperature, road-gradient or trailer-aerodynamic effects, but it gives the current diesel the stronger published starting point for repeated heavy work.
Peak power still matters for sustained high-speed work and acceleration, so the petrol’s higher output should not be dismissed. A lightly loaded petrol D90 may feel entirely adequate in normal driving. The relevant question is how often the vehicle will operate near its load and towing limits, not which single headline number is larger.
Rated capacity is not the same as a legal payload allowance
A 3,500kg braked-towing rating does not authorise every D90 diesel to tow that trailer in every loading condition. Before hitching, check all of these limits for the exact vehicle and trailer:

- the D90’s gross vehicle mass (GVM);
- front and rear axle-load limits;
- gross combination mass (GCM), meaning the permitted loaded vehicle-and-trailer combination;
- tow-ball download and the way that download uses the vehicle’s payload;
- the trailer’s own aggregate rating, brakes, tyres and coupling;
- the vehicle’s compliance plate and owner’s manual; and
- the towing and licensing rules that apply in your Australian state or territory.
Passengers, cargo, accessories, a towbar and ball weight all consume payload. If adding a heavy trailer pushes the vehicle over its axle, GVM or GCM limit, the nominal tow rating cannot cure the problem. LDV’s range information also warns that vehicle and trailer mass limits still apply, so obtain the exact figures rather than treating the headline rating as a standalone allowance.
Plan the towing hardware around the exact D90
Anyone intending to tow should source a D90-compatible towbar and wiring package only after confirming model year, body configuration and grade. Check the towbar’s rated capacity, tongue or ball-load limit, electrical compatibility, installation instructions and certification for your jurisdiction. A product that fits the body may still be unsuitable for the required trailer mass or electrical system. Ask the installer to document the rating and wiring arrangement, and have the finished setup inspected if local rules require it.

Petrol power: when the higher output and wider range matter
The petrol D90 has the higher published peak-power figure and is offered with the choice that the diesel line-up does not provide: 2WD. That combination may suit a driver who spends most time on sealed roads, does not need the diesel’s higher towing ceiling and wants a less specialised configuration. It also gives buyers more scope to match the vehicle to a lower-load family or commuting role rather than paying for a 4WD diesel grade they will rarely use.
Power and torque figures are laboratory or manufacturer specifications, not a complete description of how either vehicle feels. Transmission calibration, gearing, vehicle mass, tyre choice and the load in the cabin all affect response. Arrange a test drive that includes the roads you actually use, and if towing is central to the purchase, ask the dealer what demonstration and compliance information is available for your intended trailer.
Fuel consumption: what the published claims do and do not prove
WhichCar’s 8 October 2026 report gives a claimed combined figure for each current configuration: diesel is listed at 8.1L/100km, petrol 2WD at 9.1L/100km and petrol 4WD at 9.4L/100km. On those claims alone, diesel uses less fuel in the stated test comparison. The petrol 2WD figure is lower than the petrol 4WD figure in the same report, which is consistent with the two versions being different drivetrains and equipment packages.

Those figures cannot predict your annual fuel bill. Actual consumption changes with traffic, speed, temperature, terrain, tyre pressures, roof or recovery equipment, passengers, cargo, trailer weight, idling and driving style. Towing can move consumption far beyond an unladen combined result. The manufacturer page retrieved for this comparison did not expose a current official consumption table, so the reported numbers should remain attributed to the dated WhichCar article rather than presented as a guaranteed LDV test result.
To estimate cost without inventing a payback period, use your own assumptions:
- Estimate kilometres driven each year, separating normal use from towing if possible.
- Apply the relevant claimed consumption figure as a starting scenario, then add a conservative high-use scenario for traffic, payload and towing.
- Multiply litres by the fuel price you actually expect to pay in your area.
- Compare the result with current written purchase prices, finance costs, servicing schedules and insurance quotes for the exact petrol and diesel grades.
Do not claim that fuel savings will recover a price difference over a fixed number of years unless those inputs are known. The available material does not establish comparative servicing, repair, reliability or resale costs.
Grade and drivetrain availability
Petrol 2WD
Petrol is the listed choice for a 2WD D90. This is the simplest decision branch: if 2WD is a firm requirement, the current range points you to petrol. Confirm the exact grade, equipment and stock status because a dealer’s advertised vehicle may be a different model year or a 4WD demonstrator.
Petrol 4WD
Petrol 4WD keeps the petrol engine’s stated power advantage while adding the traction system and equipment associated with the four-wheel-drive configuration. Its reported combined-consumption claim is higher than the petrol 2WD claim. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on the surfaces you drive, the loads you carry and whether the added drivetrain capability is part of your normal use rather than an occasional aspiration.

Diesel 4WD Executive and Luxe

You tow a heavy trailer regularly
Begin with the diesel. Its current published torque and braked-towing rating give it the clearer specification advantage for repeated heavy towing. Then perform the mass-limit checks listed above, confirm trailer brakes and ball download, and price the required towbar and electrical installation. If the complete combination cannot stay within GVM, axle and GCM limits, select a lighter trailer or a different vehicle; do not rely on the headline rating.
You need a 2WD SUV
Select from the petrol variants, because the current diesel grades shown by LDV are 4WD. Compare petrol 2WD grades on equipment, payload and price, then verify that the vehicle on the quote is actually 2WD. Used listings can mix photographs and specifications from different years.
You tow occasionally but usually carry a family
There is no universal answer in the published data. A diesel may offer useful reserve for the occasions when the trailer is heavy, while a petrol 2WD or 4WD may better match your normal driving and purchase requirements. Calculate how often the trailer will approach the petrol rating, assess payload with all passengers aboard and compare written ownership costs rather than assuming occasional towing automatically justifies diesel.
You mainly commute or make short urban trips
The available evidence does not establish a single winner for urban or short-trip use. The fuel claims are combined figures and no independent real-world consumption or durability comparison was established. Drive both configurations if available, consider the grade and drivetrain you actually need, and ask for the servicing requirements that apply to your expected trip pattern.

You are considering off-road travel
The current diesel listings are 4WD, and petrol is available in 4WD as well as 2WD. That tells you which configurations have the drivetrain layout, but it does not prove comparative off-road ability. No independent instrumented off-road comparison or owner-reliability rate is established here. Evaluate ground clearance, tyres, recovery points, approach and departure geometry, payload after accessories and the manufacturer’s operating guidance on the exact vehicle.
Model-year warnings: avoid mixing old and current D90 data
The diesel’s return is recent. WhichCar reported on 8 October 2026 that diesel had been absent from the line-up for about two years and has returned with a new 2.5-litre engine. The older diesel described in that report was a 2.0-litre unit with different published output and torque. Those older figures should not be carried into a current comparison.
Older petrol specification material also differs. An archived D90 petrol specification sheet lists historical consumption claims of 10.2L/100km for 2WD and 10.9L/100km for 4WD, along with a 2,000kg braked-towing rating. That document is not a current limit for the petrol range shown in 2026. It is useful only as a warning that model-year specifications changed. The archived sheet is available at this older LDV D90 specification PDF.
Before comparing a new vehicle with a used one, record the build year, first-registration date, engine size, drivetrain, grade and the towing figures printed in the relevant manual or compliance information. A used D90 with an older engine is a different technical proposition even if the badge and body shape look similar.
How to compare dealer quotes correctly
- Write down the exact identity. Record model year, build date if supplied, grade, engine and drivetrain for every quote.
- Separate vehicle price from configuration. Identify whether the quote is for petrol 2WD, petrol 4WD, diesel Executive or diesel Luxe before comparing dollars.
- Check mass data. Ask for GVM, GCM, axle limits, kerb mass, payload and tow-ball-download information for the selected vehicle.
- List required accessories. Include a rated towbar, wiring, trailer brake equipment, roof accessories, recovery gear and any bullbar or storage system, because accessories consume payload.
- Request current written terms. Prices, campaigns, delivery charges, warranty wording and stock availability can change; a web-page figure is not a binding quote.
- Match the use case. Tell the dealer your trailer’s loaded mass, expected ball weight, passenger count and typical terrain so the proposed vehicle can be checked against the complete combination.
- Test-drive the relevant versions. A petrol 2WD drive cannot answer how a diesel 4WD behaves under your intended load, and a different grade may have different tyres or equipment.
What these published specifications cannot answer
The current figures establish a power, torque, towing and drivetrain distinction, but they do not establish real-world owner consumption, comparative scheduled-servicing prices, repair costs, reliability rates, resale value or a universally superior driving experience. No independent instrumented comparison test was identified for this article, and no specific towbar listing was verified for every year and grade.
That limitation matters when making a long-term decision. Use the published figures to narrow the configuration, then obtain current maintenance schedules, insurance prices and written dealer information for the exact vehicle. If reliability or resale is decisive, treat those as separate due-diligence questions rather than inferring an answer from engine type alone.
A practical decision framework
Use this sequence to reach a defensible choice:
- Start with non-negotiables. If you require 2WD, choose among petrol variants. If your intended trailer exceeds the petrol rating, investigate the diesel and verify every mass limit.
- Measure real loading. Weigh or accurately calculate passengers, luggage, accessories, ball download and trailer mass. Do not use an empty-trailer figure when the legal limit concerns the loaded combination.
- Choose the grade that leaves headroom. A higher trim or accessory package can reduce payload, so compare the completed vehicle rather than the bare brochure specification.
- Model fuel costs as scenarios. Use the published combined claims as a baseline and add a higher-consumption case for traffic, terrain and towing. Use local fuel prices and annual distance.
- Validate the hardware and rules. Confirm towbar, wiring, brakes, licence requirements and state or territory regulations before placing an order.
- Document the final choice. Keep the quote, specification, mass limits and accessory ratings together so the vehicle you collect matches the vehicle you evaluated.
Bottom line: diesel for work, petrol for choice
The current D90 diesel is the more convincing specification match for frequent heavy towing because it combines the higher stated torque with the higher braked-towing rating, and its reported combined-consumption claim is lower. It is nevertheless a 4WD-only choice in the Executive and Luxe grades shown by LDV.
