Las Vegas to Miami Road Trip Stops: Routes, Detours, and Planning

Plan a Las Vegas-to-Miami drive around your time and interests: choose an Arizona I-40 stop cluster, add the five-day Great Basin Highway for Nevada scenery, or use a sample city route as a flexible starting point.

The best stops between Las Vegas and Miami depend on how much time you have and whether you want to prioritize national parks, Route 66, cities, or the Everglades. For a western highlight, the Grand Canyon’s South Rim is a major detour: the National Park Service lists it 278 miles from Las Vegas. An I-40-oriented route can add Arizona history and geology stops; travelers with several extra days can instead take a scenic Great Basin Highway loop through Nevada. East of Arizona, treat city stops as flexible itinerary ideas rather than a fixed schedule.

Choose a route style before choosing individual stops

There is no single stop sequence that suits every Las Vegas-to-Miami drive. The National Park Service, Travel Nevada, Visit Las Vegas, and a third-party itinerary planner offer useful pieces, but the available information does not establish a current authoritative end-to-end mileage or total driving time. Check a current route planner for your dates, then build stops around the time you can spend away from the highway.

Route approach Best fit Known distance or duration What to keep in mind
Eastbound via I-40 and Arizona Travelers interested in the Grand Canyon, Route 66, and Arizona geology The NPS lists Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon South Rim as 278 miles (447 km); it does not establish a total Las Vegas-to-Miami distance here. The South Rim is a substantial western detour, not a stop directly on an eastbound line.
Great Basin Highway scenic extension Travelers with extra days who want Nevada landscapes, parks, and smaller communities Travel Nevada presents a five-day Las Vegas-to-Great Basin National Park itinerary. Its itinerary gives 52 miles from Las Vegas to Valley of Fire and 155 miles from Valley of Fire to Caliente. This is a scenic diversion rather than a quick, direct route to Miami.
City-and-coast sample sequence Travelers who want urban breaks and a Gulf Coast approach Trippy presents a six-day sample itinerary; it includes two driving days of about ten hours each. It is a third-party planning example, not a verified recommendation or a comfortable pace for every driver.

Which stops make sense in Arizona?

The Grand Canyon South Rim is the strongest major stop near the western end of the trip, but account for the distance before adding it. The NPS route directions put it 278 miles from Las Vegas, via Highway 93 south to Kingman, I-40 east to Williams, then Highway 64 north. From Flagstaff, the South Rim is 81 miles (130 km), according to the NPS. The service notes that its directions are not the only route to the park, so check current maps and conditions rather than treating one approach as mandatory.

For a Grand Canyon visit

  • Decide whether the South Rim is worth the extra miles for your schedule; do not count it as a quick roadside stop.
  • If your route takes you through Flagstaff, use it as a planning reference: the NPS lists the South Rim 81 miles away and describes three approaches from Flagstaff.
  • Check the park’s current access information and your route before departure. Drive times and conditions vary, and no dependable current total trip time is established here.

For I-40, Route 66, and roadside history

Visit Las Vegas’s May 8, 2026 article names several Arizona possibilities: Delgadillo’s Snow Cap Drive-In in Seligman, roadside remains at Twin Arrows near Flagstaff, Meteor Crater near Winslow, and Petrified Forest. These are candidates to select from, not a single continuous attraction itinerary. Check each venue’s access and operating hours independently, and confirm detour mileage before committing to a stop.

When is the Great Basin Highway worth adding?

Choose the Great Basin Highway if Nevada scenery and outdoor stops matter more than making the quickest eastbound progress. Travel Nevada lays out a five-day route from Las Vegas toward Great Basin National Park that closely follows US 93. Its sequence includes Valley of Fire State Park, Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge, Caliente, Kershaw-Ryan State Park, Ely, and Great Basin National Park.

Stops along Travel Nevada’s five-day itinerary

  • Valley of Fire State Park: The itinerary gives 52 miles for the Las Vegas-to-park leg and calls out Atlatl Rock, Elephant Rock, Fire Wave, and White Domes.
  • Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge: Travel Nevada highlights it as a birding stop.
  • Caliente and Kershaw-Ryan State Park: The itinerary gives 155 miles from Valley of Fire to Caliente and includes Kershaw-Ryan on the route.
  • Ely and Great Basin National Park: The itinerary continues toward Great Basin, with Lehman Caves and stargazing among its suggested activities.

Use Travel Nevada’s itinerary for the stop sequence and check current access for individual sites. The five-day framing is for that scenic Nevada trip; it should not be mistaken for the time needed to drive from Las Vegas to Miami.

What are useful eastbound city stops?

A Trippy sample itinerary offers one possible sequence after the Grand Canyon: Albuquerque, Amarillo, Fort Worth, Jackson, Mississippi, Pensacola, Orlando, and Miami. It is a third-party planner’s example, not proof that this order is optimal. The available information does not independently establish specific attractions in those cities, so choose city stops based on your interests, opening hours, and where you want to break up the drive.

The sample is described as a six-day schedule, including two days with roughly ten hours of driving. Treat that as a starting point to revise, not a default pace: add time for meals, fuel, traffic, sightseeing, and rest, and avoid planning a day around an optimistic drive-time estimate alone.

How should you plan an Everglades visit from Miami?

Choose an Everglades access area before putting “Everglades” on the itinerary. The park covers 1,509,000 acres, according to the NPS, and its entrances are not interconnected. A car is needed to travel within the park, and visitor areas can be at least an hour apart by car. The NPS identifies Shark Valley as the entrance closest to Greater Miami.

Shark Valley

From the Florida Turnpike, the NPS directs drivers to US 41 (Tamiami Trail) and then 25 miles west to the Shark Valley Visitor Center. This is the most direct of the described options for a visit from the Miami area; check current park access and conditions before setting out.

Homestead and Flamingo

The NPS describes the Homestead entrance as the park’s main entrance. From the Florida Turnpike, continue south to US 1 in Florida City, then turn onto Palm Drive (State Road 9336). The Flamingo Visitor Center is 38 miles south of the main entrance. Seasonal Homestead trolley service is described as operating approximately December through April, but schedules can change, so verify current availability.

Everglades City

For the Everglades City entrance, the NPS directs drivers from I-75 exit 80 onto State Road 29. This is a separate access area; do not assume that arriving at one entrance gives you a quick drive to another park area.

The NPS warns that Homestead and Shark Valley can be congested on busy winter weekends and recommends visiting on weekdays and arriving before 10 a.m. Confirm current conditions and services before travel.

How can you make the driving days more manageable?

  • Build the trip around realistic days. Set your overnight locations and sightseeing time before deciding how many miles to cover. The Trippy example’s two roughly ten-hour driving days show why a six-day schedule may not suit every traveler.
  • Map fuel, meals, and overnight stops in advance. Travel Nevada advises mapping these stops for Nevada road trips rather than relying on finding services as you go.
  • Prepare for weak connectivity. Travel Nevada warns that phone service can be spotty off-grid. Save directions and key information for offline use, and keep a paper map or atlas as a backup if useful.
  • Check road conditions. Travel Nevada advises checking Nevada 511 for closures and inclement weather, especially in winter. Recheck conditions and park access close to departure because weather, construction, and operating details can change.
  • Leave room for stops and delays. A destination-to-destination route estimate does not include time spent at parks, attractions, meals, fuel stops, or in traffic.
