Land Rover Defender OCTA vs Standard Defender: What Does the OCTA Add?

The Defender OCTA adds 110 PS, 125 Nm and a 1.4-second quicker claimed 0–100 km/h time over the Defender 110 V8 reference, plus 6D Dynamics suspension, OCTA Mode, dedicated brakes and specialised tyres.

Short answer: The Defender OCTA is the high-performance Defender variant. In Land Rover’s published comparison figures, it has up to 635 PS and 750 Nm, versus 525 PS and 625 Nm for the Defender 110 V8 shown on the same overview. Land Rover quotes 0–100 km/h in 4.0 seconds for OCTA and 5.4 seconds for that V8. The OCTA also adds 6D Dynamics suspension, OCTA Mode with a loose-gravel ABS calibration, OCTA-specific braking hardware, specially developed 838 mm-diameter tyres and a claimed wading depth of up to one metre.

Those are manufacturer specifications and claims, not results from an independent instrumented comparison. Exact equipment, outputs and availability vary by market and model year, so use the figures below as a guide to the design intent and verify the specification for the vehicle you can actually buy.

What the Defender OCTA adds at a glance

The standard Defender range covers several body styles, engines and equipment levels. For a clean performance comparison, Land Rover’s published Defender 110 overview provides a standard V8 reference point. Against that reference, OCTA is not merely a cosmetic package or a small engine tune: it combines a more powerful powertrain with a substantially reworked chassis and dedicated off-road controls.

Wading Up to one metre, according to Land Rover Land Rover does not provide a directly comparable standard 110 figure. Treat the OCTA depth as a manufacturer claim and check the route and exit before entering water.
Tyres Specially developed 838 mm-diameter tyres, with all-season and advanced all-terrain choices listed by Land Rover Land Rover does not establish an exact equivalent tyre specification in this comparison. Tyre choice is part of OCTA’s performance package; confirm size, load rating and fitment locally.

Land Rover’s pages warn that displayed figures can represent different models and that OCTA specifications and availability vary by market. A standard Defender with a different engine, body or option package will not necessarily match the V8 figures in this table.

Power, torque and acceleration

OCTA’s published output

Land Rover lists the Defender OCTA at up to 635 PS and 750 Nm. The “up to” qualification matters: it signals a maximum figure within the available market and configuration range rather than a promise that every OCTA-badged vehicle worldwide has an identical output. Land Rover’s current model information identifies OCTA and OCTA Black, but local equipment and figures still need confirmation.

How it compares with the standard V8

The Defender 110 overview lists 525 PS and 625 Nm for the standard V8 reference used here. Subtracting the published figures gives OCTA an additional 110 PS and 125 Nm. Land Rover quotes 4.0 seconds from 0–100 km/h for OCTA against 5.4 seconds for the 110 V8.

That 1.4-second difference is meaningful in a large, heavy SUV: it changes how quickly the vehicle can join a motorway, pass slower traffic or build speed on a firm trail. It does not mean every run in every country will reproduce the number. Acceleration figures depend on specification, tyre, fuel, temperature, surface, test method and whether a market uses a different certification cycle. The quoted times are manufacturer statements, not independently verified tests.

Why the extra output is more than a headline number

More torque can reduce the need for high engine speed when climbing or towing, while the extra power extends the rate at which the vehicle can accelerate once it is moving. In an off-road vehicle, however, output is useful only when the tyres can transmit it and the chassis can keep the body controlled. OCTA’s suspension and control changes are intended to make the additional performance usable, rather than simply making the specification sheet look stronger.

6D Dynamics: the central chassis difference

What Land Rover says the system is

Land Rover describes OCTA’s “New 6D Dynamics air suspension” as responding intelligently to driving styles, with hydraulically interlinked dampers and height-adjustable air springs. The hydraulic links allow the suspension units to influence one another rather than working as completely isolated corners, while the air springs provide variable ride height.

In practical terms, the system is designed to address two conflicting requirements. A high-performance road vehicle benefits from limiting pitch under braking, squat under acceleration and roll in a corner. An off-road vehicle needs wheel movement, ground clearance and the ability to absorb abrupt changes in terrain. A system that can vary its responses and height can target both uses without requiring one fixed compromise in every situation.

What the published information does not prove

The official description explains the components and intended response, but it does not provide an independently measured reduction in roll, a lap-time improvement, suspension-travel figure or comparison test against a standard Defender. It is therefore accurate to call 6D Dynamics OCTA’s defining hardware change, but not to claim a specific percentage improvement or guaranteed superiority on every surface.

Height adjustment and trail planning

Height-adjustable air springs can help provide clearance where the terrain demands it and a lower stance where road control or access is more important. The correct setting still depends on the obstacle, approach speed and tyre contact. Raising a vehicle does not remove the need to check breakover, approach and departure angles, side slopes, underbody exposure and the available traction.

OCTA Mode and electronic control

Loose-gravel ABS calibration

Land Rover says OCTA Mode offers a unique ABS calibration designed for loose gravel surfaces. The manufacturer presents it as the most engaging off-road setting. On loose gravel, braking strategy differs from braking on clean tarmac: allowing some controlled material to build in front of the tyre can help deceleration, while excessive intervention can lengthen stopping distance or reduce steering authority. The calibration is intended to account for that surface.

That statement describes the software strategy; it is not a published stopping-distance result. Actual braking depends on gradient, aggregate depth, tyre condition, load, temperature and driver input. OCTA Mode should be selected for the type of terrain for which it was designed, not treated as a universal shortcut for every slippery surface.

How to use the mode responsibly

  1. Identify the surface before selecting a mode. Loose gravel, packed dirt, mud, wet grass and rock do not offer the same grip.
  2. Reduce speed before the obstacle or descent. Electronic calibration cannot overcome excessive entry speed.
  3. Keep the vehicle pointed where you want it to go and leave room for the route to change as the surface moves.
  4. After the loose section, return to a road-appropriate setting and confirm that steering, braking and visibility are suitable for traffic.

The exact menu name, available settings and mode behaviour can vary with market software and model year. Use the owner’s manual for the vehicle in front of you.

Off-road equipment and wading

One-metre wading claim

Land Rover claims OCTA can wade to a depth of up to one metre. “Up to” is a maximum manufacturer claim, not permission to enter any water that appears to be one metre deep. Water level can change across a crossing, and a submerged hole, moving current or soft exit can stop a vehicle even when the nominal depth is within the published limit.

Land Rover’s guidance is to check the route and the exit before wading. That advice is essential because the exit often presents the greater risk: a steep bank, loose mud, hidden rocks or insufficient traction can leave the vehicle stranded after the entry looked easy.

Wading checklist

  • Walk or otherwise verify the entry, deepest point and exit where it is safe and legal to do so.
  • Check for current, submerged obstacles, a soft bottom and a usable recovery route.
  • Confirm that the depth is below the vehicle’s applicable limit and account for waves created by other vehicles.
  • Use a steady, controlled pace; avoid creating a bow wave large enough to reach vulnerable openings.
  • Test the brakes at low speed on the exit and inspect for debris before returning to normal road speed.

Water crossings can damage mechanical and electrical components even when the advertised depth is not exceeded. Follow the owner’s manual and local recovery guidance.

Tyres, wheels and the contact patch

Land Rover says OCTA uses specially developed 838 mm-diameter tyres and lists all-season and advanced all-terrain choices. The large diameter contributes to the vehicle’s stance and can help the tyre roll over certain obstacles, while tread design determines how the contact patch behaves on pavement, gravel, mud and rock.

An all-season choice is oriented toward a broad mix of road conditions. An advanced all-terrain option generally prioritises loose-surface grip and casing robustness, with possible trade-offs in road noise, rolling resistance and wet-road feel. No exact retail sizes, wheel widths, load ratings or compatibility for every market are published, so do not order a replacement by diameter alone.

What to verify before changing tyres

  • Read the tyre size, load index and speed rating on the vehicle’s local specification or sidewall.
  • Confirm clearance at full steering lock and full suspension travel.
  • Check whether the vehicle’s monitoring system and wheel package require a particular sensor or valve arrangement.
  • Match the tyre to the expected use: motorway mileage, gravel travel, mud, rock or mixed family driving.
  • Keep the axle and vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations in view; a tyre that fits physically may still be unsuitable by rating or calibration.

Brakes and the rest of the OCTA hardware

OCTA adds OCTA-specific braking equipment, although Land Rover’s official pages do not provide a complete comparative rotor, caliper, pad or thermal-capacity specification against every standard Defender version. The existence of dedicated braking hardware is consistent with the higher output and intended high-speed off-road use, but it should not be turned into an unverified claim about stopping distance or fade resistance.

When comparing vehicles at a retailer, ask for the exact brake specification, wheel clearance and maintenance requirements for the local vehicle identification number. Different markets, option packs and model years can alter those details.

Which Defender is the better fit?

Choose OCTA when performance is a priority

  • You want the highest published Defender output and the quickest manufacturer-quoted acceleration in this comparison.
  • You regularly drive fast gravel roads or demanding mixed terrain where a dedicated chassis and control mode are useful.
  • You value the 6D Dynamics system and are prepared to pay for specialised hardware even when most of your mileage is on pavement.
  • You are willing to verify local tyres, brakes, software and service support rather than assuming every market receives the same specification.

Choose a standard Defender when versatility is enough

  • Your use is primarily commuting, touring, family transport and occasional trails rather than high-speed performance driving.
  • You do not need the OCTA’s maximum power, dedicated mode or specialised suspension architecture.
  • You are comparing several engines, body styles or equipment levels and want the standard model whose size, payload and features match your actual routes.
  • You prefer to direct the budget toward a configuration, safety equipment or accessories that solve a specific need.

A standard Defender is not a single fixed specification. The 110 V8 figures provide a clear published benchmark, but other standard engines and body styles can be materially different. Compare like with like: same market, model year, body, engine, wheel and equipment level.

Buying and specification checks

There is no useful universal OCTA-versus-standard price answer without selecting a country, tax treatment, model year and comparable equipment. Land Rover does not publish a consistent market basis for a price table. Ask a local retailer for an itemised quote rather than converting a foreign headline price.

  1. Confirm the market and model year. Ask which power, emissions, wheel, tyre and software specification applies to the vehicle’s registration market.
  2. Verify the exact trim. Check whether the vehicle is OCTA or OCTA Black and identify every fitted option instead of relying on photographs.
  3. Check the performance figures on the local sheet. Confirm power, torque and acceleration units and the test standard used.
  4. Inspect the chassis equipment. Verify that 6D Dynamics, OCTA Mode and the stated braking package are fitted, not merely available in a brochure family page.
  5. Confirm tyre and wheel details. Record size, load rating, speed rating and the approved alternatives before buying replacements.
  6. Ask about usage limits. Obtain the owner’s-manual guidance for wading, towing, payload, off-road modes and recovery points.
  7. Plan service and recovery. Make sure local technicians can support the suspension, electronics, tyres and brakes and that recovery equipment is rated for the vehicle.

Common comparison mistakes

Comparing OCTA with the wrong Defender

Calling every non-OCTA vehicle “the standard Defender” hides meaningful differences. The published 525 PS and 625 Nm figures belong to the Defender 110 V8 overview, not to every Defender engine or body. State the exact reference whenever quoting a number.

Treating marketing claims as independent tests

The 4.0-second acceleration time, one-metre wading capability and 6D Dynamics behaviour are manufacturer statements in Land Rover’s published information. No dated independent instrumented comparison or long-term reliability evidence is provided by Land Rover. They should be reported with that attribution, not presented as measured third-party results.

Assuming a feature guarantees an outcome

A loose-gravel ABS calibration cannot create grip where none exists. Adjustable air suspension cannot eliminate rollover risk, and a large all-terrain tyre cannot compensate for an unsafe line or excessive speed. Equipment expands the vehicle’s operating envelope; it does not replace route assessment or training.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a foreign specification as a buying promise

Land Rover states that OCTA specifications and availability vary by market. A web page viewed in one country may not describe the engine output, tyres, options or certification of a vehicle sold in another. Use the local official specification and vehicle build information.

Bottom line for the OCTA decision

The Defender OCTA adds measurable straight-line performance and a purpose-built chassis package to the Defender formula. On Land Rover’s cited figures, the gain is 110 PS, 125 Nm and 1.4 seconds to 100 km/h over the Defender 110 V8 reference. The more important qualitative additions are 6D Dynamics air suspension, OCTA Mode’s loose-gravel ABS calibration, OCTA-specific brakes, 838 mm-diameter tyre options and a claimed one-metre wading capability.

Buy it for that combination of output, suspension control and specialised off-road intent—not simply because it carries a higher trim name. If your driving does not use those capabilities, a correctly specified standard Defender may provide the better match. If it does, verify the local model-year equipment and understand the limits behind every manufacturer claim before committing.
