What the latest compact Defender spy report says
Motor.es reported on September 3, 2026, that a camouflaged prototype it identifies as the “Defender Sport” was seen near JLR facilities close to the Nürburgring. The outlet says “Defender 80” is another name in circulation. Its account describes testing in hot southern Europe and cold northern Europe, but these are spy-report details rather than confirmation from JLR of the model’s identity or development program. The vehicle is described as a compact-looking, five-door SUV with short overhangs and a box mounted at the rear. Motor.es interprets that box as a possible place for charging cables; its purpose has not been confirmed by the manufacturer. Motor.es’s report
Is the compact Defender confirmed to be testing in Germany?
Not conclusively. Motor.es places the compact-looking prototype near JLR facilities close to the Nürburgring, but a separate 2026 SEMA report about testing on country roads outside the Nürburgring describes a facelifted, full-size Defender. Reports also differ by sighting and date: InsideEVs Deutschland said in September 2025 that a compact Land Rover prototype had been photographed testing in Britain. What are “Defender 80” and “Defender Sport”?

Autoblog reported in November 2025 that the anticipated model might replace the Discovery Sport and use JLR’s Electric Modular Architecture (EMA), while noting that battery and powertrain details were unknown at the time. Earlier reports anticipated a 2027 arrival, while Motor.es’s 2026 story forecasts an electric launch around mid-2027 and possible hybrid versions in 2028.
