The Land Cruiser 105 is part of the 100 Series generation, but it is not mechanically identical to the better-known 100 variants. Toyota’s model-code documentation lists the FZJ105 and HZJ105 with a rigid front axle and leading arms; listed 100 Series codes such as FZJ100, UZJ100 and HDJ100 use independent double-wishbone front suspension. If you are asking whether the 105 has a solid front axle, the answer for those documented 105 codes is yes.
What makes the Land Cruiser 105 different?
The key difference is the front suspension, not a separate generation. Toyota’s model-code table distinguishes the 105’s rigid-front-axle setup from the independent front suspension used by the listed 100 Series variants. That hardware distinction is meaningful, but it does not by itself establish that one version is more reliable, comfortable, durable or capable than the other.
| Documented model codes | Front suspension | Toyota-listed engine |
|---|---|---|
| FZJ105 | Rigid front axle with leading arms (RFS) | 1FZ-FE petrol |
| HZJ105 | Rigid front axle with leading arms (RFS) | 1HZ diesel |
| FZJ100 | Independent double-wishbone front suspension (IFS) | 1FZ-FE petrol |
| UZJ100 | Independent double-wishbone front suspension (IFS) | 2UZ-FE petrol |
| HDJ100 | Independent double-wishbone front suspension (IFS) | 1HD-FTE diesel |
These are model-code and engine combinations listed by Toyota, not a complete list of every market’s grades or equipment. Toyota’s 100 Series launch announcement described the 100’s double-wishbone independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering; that description concerns the announced 100 design, not the 105’s rigid axle. Toyota’s January 19, 1998 announcement gives that context.
What do the 105’s model codes tell you?
Toyota lists FZJ105 with the 1FZ-FE petrol engine and HZJ105 with the 1HZ diesel. The letters and numbers are therefore more useful than a broad label such as “100 Series” when checking a vehicle’s engine, parts or service information. Do not assume that a particular transmission, trim, or equipment package follows from the 105 designation alone.

When did the 105 fit into Land Cruiser history?
Toyota dates the launch of the 100 Series to January 1998 and identifies it as the successor to the 80 Series. The 200 Series launched in September 2007 as the successor to the 100, according to Toyota’s Land Cruiser history timeline. Those are generation milestones, not proof that the 105 was sold in every market for the entire period.

A service-manual catalog entry covers FZJ105R and HZJ105R for a manual spanning January 1998 to August 2007. That catalog coverage is useful when looking for model-specific service information, but it should not be read as a universal sales-date range. Match any Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series repair manual or parts information to the full code, market and vehicle details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare a 105 with a 100?
Start with the full model code rather than assuming every vehicle called a 100 has the same specification. Toyota’s listed 100-family codes include the FZJ100 with a 1FZ-FE petrol engine, UZJ100 with a 2UZ-FE petrol engine, and HDJ100 with a 1HD-FTE diesel, alongside the FZJ105 and HZJ105 combinations shown above. These are representative documented codes, not a global catalog of every configuration.

- Check the front suspension: the documented 105 codes use a rigid axle with leading arms, while the listed 100 codes use independent double wishbones.
- Verify the engine: Toyota lists FZJ105/1FZ-FE and HZJ105/1HZ; other engine combinations in the family use different model codes.
- Confirm market and grade: country, year, transmission and equipment may affect a specific vehicle’s specification.
- Compare for your intended use: the documented hardware establishes a design difference, not a controlled verdict on comfort, reliability or off-road performance.
Toyota’s lineage specifications also include figures for particular non-105 grades: a representative 2UZ-FE V8 wagon is listed at 4,663 cc and 235 PS at 4,800 rpm, while a representative 1HD-FTE diesel van grade is listed at 4,163 cc and 205 kW (280 PS) at 3,400 rpm. These are grade-specific Toyota figures, not 105 specifications or a basis for comparing every 100 and 105.
