Lamborghini Miura FAQ: How Rare It Is, What It’s Worth, and What to Check Before Buying

The Miura is a sub-800-production landmark, but conflicting records and wide sale results make chassis-level identity, originality and provenance essential to valuing one.

The Lamborghini Miura is one of the rarest and most influential production cars of the 1960s. It debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966 with a transversely mounted, mid-engine V12 and Bertone bodywork. Lamborghini identifies it as the company’s first mid-engine production model. Fewer than 800 cars were made, although published totals differ by source and version.

As of 2026, published market snapshots place benchmark values around $1.78 million for a P400, $1.85 million for a P400 S and $4.47 million for a P400 SV. Those are market aggregates, not appraisals: a particular car’s documented identity, factory specification, originality, condition, provenance and sale circumstances can matter more than its badge.

What is the Lamborghini Miura?

The Miura is a two-seat Lamborghini sports car introduced in 1966. Its four-litre V12 sits behind the cockpit and ahead of the rear axle, making it a genuine mid-engine design. The engine is mounted transversely, a packaging solution that created engineering challenges around the gearbox but allowed the car to remain relatively compact.

Carrozzeria Bertone designed the body. The combination of a mid-mounted V12, low proportions and dramatic styling made the Miura a landmark in performance-car design. Lamborghini says contemporary media first used the term “supercar” for the Miura; CLASSIC.COM says the model is widely credited as the first supercar. That description is best treated as an attributed historical claim rather than an objective category with a single official definition.

In Lamborghini’s naming, “P400” refers to the engine’s position and its four-litre displacement. The model evolved through three principal production versions: P400, P400 S and P400 SV.

Miura P400 vs. P400 S vs. P400 SV

The three versions share the basic concept but are not interchangeable. Lamborghini reports progressively higher output and identifies specific mechanical, chassis and trim changes for each step.

Version Manufacturer-published output Key distinctions
P400 350 CV at 7,000 rpm Original production version; four-litre transversely mounted V12 and Bertone bodywork.
P400 S 370 CV at 7,700 rpm More power, styling revisions and a more comfortable interior.
P400 SV 385 CV at 7,850 rpm Larger rear tires, widened rear arches, stronger chassis, revised suspension, independent gearbox lubrication and removal of the earlier headlight “eyelashes.”

These are Lamborghini’s CV figures, reproduced without conversion to another horsepower standard. The specification differences help identify a car and explain why the versions trade at different levels, but they do not create a fixed valuation formula. A very original P400 with exceptional history can be more desirable than a modified later car, while a documented SV conversion is not automatically equivalent to a factory-built SV.

How many Lamborghini Miuras were made?

There is no single production total that every published source accepts. The disagreement is concentrated in the P400 and SV counts, and historical chassis lists, rebuilt cars and classification methods add complexity. The safest summary is that fewer than 800 Miuras were produced.

Source P400 P400 S P400 SV How to use the figures
Automobili Lamborghini model biography, accessed 2026 265 338 150 Official manufacturer figures, but the P400 total conflicts with other records.
Figures attributed to Lamborghini’s 2005 Historical Archive and transcribed by Lamborghini Miura Options, accessed 2026 275 338 150 Independent transcription of archive figures; the archive’s own page was not available in the reviewed material.
Registro Italiano Miura homepage, accessed 2026 Not stated 338 147 Registry totals; the SV figure differs from Lamborghini’s model biography.

Do not add one row’s numbers to another and present the result as a definitive grand total. If a seller claims a car is one of a particular number built, treat that as a starting point for chassis-level verification, not proof. The car’s production number, chassis, engine, body, model designation, original colors and recorded anomalies are more useful to a buyer than a broad worldwide total.

What is a Lamborghini Miura worth?

Published figures show a very high-value market, but they are snapshots taken from different datasets. CLASSIC.COM’s Miura page, as accessed in 2026, displayed subtype benchmarks of $1,775,181 for the P400, $1,851,502 for the P400 S and $4,474,074 for the P400 SV. The same page recorded a highest Miura sale of $6,605,000 for a 1972 P400 SV on March 7, 2026, and a lowest recorded sale of $610,000 for a 1967 P400 on October 26, 2024.

Those figures are not permanent averages and should not be applied mechanically to an individual car. The page’s search excerpt and opened page showed different benchmark or average values, which is a reminder that market databases can update, recalculate or display different measures. Use the figures as dated reference points, not as a guaranteed asking price or appraisal.

A separate Marque results page tracked four verified United States sales from August 15, 2015 through May 16, 2026. Its sample had a median of US$2,255,000, a low of US$1,705,000 and a high of US$4,675,000. Three of the four results were from 2025–2026 and one was from 2015. Marque describes the data as public auction results that may contain omissions or errors, so this small, US-only sample provides context rather than a universal market estimate.

What determines the price of a specific Miura?

Comparable sales are useful only when the cars are genuinely comparable. Before relying on a headline number, separate the following questions:

  • AGE RECOMMENDATION: Recommended for children ages 3 and up, suitable as a gift for young car fans and adult collectors alike
  • Which version is it? Confirm P400, P400 S or P400 SV from factory and chassis records, not only from trim or engine claims.
  • Is the identity documented? A factory-built SV and a later conversion may look similar but do not establish the same history.
  • Is the specification original? Colors, materials, wheels, body details, engine and gearbox configuration can affect collector appeal when supported by records.
  • How complete is the provenance? Known owners, delivery destination, period documentation and a continuous chain of custody can distinguish two cars with similar appearance.
  • What is the condition? A freshly restored car is not automatically more valuable than an original car; the quality, documentation and extent of work matter.
  • What was the transaction context? Auction venue, reserve, publicity, geography and buyer competition can move a result away from a database benchmark.

The reviewed market sources do not quantify a universal dollar adjustment for any of these factors. A credible valuation therefore requires a specialist appraisal and a documentation review for the individual chassis.

How to check a Miura before buying

Because production totals and version claims can conflict, identity and provenance work should come before negotiating on appearance or a market headline. Use this sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record every identifying number. Photograph and transcribe the chassis, body and engine numbers, plus the vehicle identification number where present. Do not rely on a seller’s typed list.
  2. Establish the claimed version. Ask whether the car is a factory P400, P400 S or P400 SV, and request the evidence supporting that designation. If the car has later parts or a conversion history, describe it as such rather than treating the conversion as a factory build.
  3. Check production and dispatch information. Compare the claimed production number, dispatch date, destination, dealer and first owner with specialist records.
  4. Reconcile original specification. Verify original colors, materials and major components against the chassis record. A mismatch is not automatically disqualifying, but it must be explained and documented.
  5. Trace ownership history. Gather invoices, registration records, restoration photographs, old catalogs, correspondence and auction descriptions. Look for unexplained gaps or conflicting dates.
  6. Use independent specialist inspection. Commission a qualified Miura specialist to inspect the actual car and its records before purchase. The available historical sources do not establish a complete mechanical checklist, service interval schedule or repair-cost budget, so do not substitute a generic classic-car inspection for model-specific expertise.
  7. Obtain a written valuation opinion. Give the appraiser the identity file, originality evidence, condition report and comparable sold results. Ask the opinion to state assumptions and distinguish a factory specification from later modifications.
  8. Make the offer conditional. Tie the purchase to satisfactory verification of identity, title, records and inspection findings. Preserve copies of the documents used to reach the decision.

Which records and registries help establish authenticity?

The Miura Register

The Miura Register is a practical research reference for chassis-level due diligence. Its product description says it lists cars by production number and records, when known, the dispatch date, body, chassis and engine numbers, model type, original colors and materials, destination, dealer and first owner. It also notes anomalies and includes drawings showing the locations of chassis, body and VIN numbers.

The publisher describes the reference as a 330-page English hardback, ISBN 978-1-5272-6796-1. Availability indicators on the product page were contradictory when accessed, so confirm the current edition and stock directly before ordering. The book can support research; it does not replace an inspection or factory documentation.

Registro Italiano Miura

Registro Italiano Miura presents itself as an owner community preserving Miura history, technical information and car records. It says it can accompany owners through certification, but explicitly states that it does not replace Automobili Lamborghini for certification. Registry participation or a community record should therefore be described as supporting evidence, never as factory certification.

Ownership costs, maintenance and parts: what is actually established?

The available evidence does not provide a reliable Miura maintenance schedule, model-specific repair budget, parts-availability assessment or storage-and-use protocol. That means a buyer should not rely on an invented annual-cost figure or assume that a generic classic-car consumable, interval or repair practice applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before committing funds, ask a current Miura specialist to prepare a car-specific plan covering inspection findings, deferred work, restoration scope, storage, intended mileage and regional parts support. Have the specialist separate immediate safety work from cosmetic improvements and identify which components are original, replaced, rebuilt or modified. Get the advice in writing so it can inform both the purchase price and the ownership budget.

Is a later Miura automatically the better investment?

No. Lamborghini’s output rises from 350 CV in the P400 to 370 CV in the P400 S and 385 CV in the SV, and the SV adds significant chassis, tire, suspension and lubrication changes. Those specifications help explain the strong SV market benchmark, but they do not guarantee that every SV is worth more than every P400 or S.

Factory identity, originality, provenance and condition remain decisive. A documented, well-preserved earlier car can be more compelling than a poorly documented later car, while an attractive conversion needs to be valued as a conversion unless factory records establish otherwise.
