Kyte Shuts Down After Selling Customer List to Turo

Kyte shut down in 2025 after loan trouble and fleet liquidation. It sold its customer list to Turo, but former customers should not assume Turo took over bookings or refunds.

Kyte had shut down by August 15, 2025, after falling behind on some loans, losing control of its vehicle fleet and failing to secure new financing. The company sold its customer list to Turo in July, but that sale does not mean Turo took over Kyte reservations or refunds.

What happened to Kyte?

Kyte launched in 2019 with a rental model built around delivering cars from its own fleet to customers’ homes. It expanded to 14 markets and raised more than $300 million in financing over its lifetime, according to TechCrunch’s August 15, 2025 report. Kyte described itself as the “best competitor to Hertz”; that was the company’s own positioning, not an independent ranking.

By 2024, Kyte was struggling to generate free cash flow in Atlanta, Chicago, Boston and Washington, D.C. It explored a sale, then chose to restructure and concentrate on profitability in San Francisco and New York City. That retrenchment did not prevent the eventual shutdown.

Why did Kyte shut down?

TechCrunch reported that Kyte fell behind on some loans. Its top lender repossessed and liquidated the vehicle fleet, leaving the company without the cars central to its rental business. Kyte’s board pursued financing options but could not secure funding, and voted to wind down the company. Kyte then entered a form of receivership in California, according to a notice sent to creditors.

Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

The sequence matters: the reported closure followed both financial pressure and the loss of the fleet—not simply a change in strategy or a sale to another rental company. The financing totals and business history above are figures reported by TechCrunch, not audited financial statements.

Did Turo buy Kyte?

Kyte sold its customer list to Turo in July 2025, according to TechCrunch. The reporting does not say that Turo bought Kyte’s rental operation, took over its fleet, accepted existing reservations or assumed Kyte’s debts or refund obligations. Turo is a peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace; Kyte operated rentals using a fleet it controlled.

What should former Kyte customers do about prepaid reservations?

Some customers told TechCrunch they had prepaid for trips and were still waiting for refunds after Kyte closed. The report describes mixed outcomes: some customers said they obtained chargebacks through their card companies, while others had not. Kyte CEO Nikolaus Volk suggested to the publication that a chargeback might be the quickest route to recover money, but the article does not establish a guaranteed remedy or the current status of individual claims.

  • If you paid by card, contact the card issuer that processed the transaction and ask whether a dispute or chargeback is available for the undelivered rental. Provide your booking confirmation, payment record and any communications with Kyte.
  • If you used another payment method, contact that provider and ask what dispute process, if any, applies. Options and deadlines depend on the provider and the transaction.
  • Keep copies of your reservation, receipts, cancellation or refund requests, and responses. Do not assume that Turo can resolve a Kyte booking simply because it acquired Kyte’s customer list.

How Kyte’s model differed from other rental options

Kyte’s defining feature was delivery of a company-controlled rental car to the customer’s home. Turo instead connects customers with cars listed by individual hosts. For a replacement rental, compare whether the provider serves your location, how pickup or delivery works, the booking and cancellation terms, and how payment disputes are handled. The shutdown report does not establish current prices, coverage or terms for Turo or traditional rental companies, so check those directly before booking.
