Kiwano K01/KO1 Monowheel: What the $800 2017 Launch Offer Included

The Kiwano K01—also styled KO1 in Kiwano and Shark Group materials—was a one-wheel, self-balancing electric scooter with handlebars and body-motion control. Its often-quoted $800 price was a 2017 launch offer, not a verified current price. Published specifications also differ: 2017 launch coverage and Kiwano’s announcement advertised up to 20 mph and 20 miles, while Shark Group’s project page now lists up to 12 mph and approximately 25 miles. These are claims from different sources and dates, not results of a controlled comparison.

What the Kiwano K01 is

The K01/KO1 combines a single wheel with handlebars and self-balancing control. The 2017 coverage and maker material describe riders steering through body movement; Shark Group’s project page likewise says riders control it with body movements. It is a distinct monowheel design, not a conventional two-wheel kick scooter.

Kiwano’s June 28, 2017 announcement described the KO1 as “a one wheel scooter that uses our completely custom-designed and patented wheel.” The statement is Kiwano’s product description, not an independent assessment of the design or patent.

Why the quoted specifications do not line up

The figures below come from separate publications and should not be combined into a single definitive specification. New Atlas reported launch-era figures in May 2017, Kiwano published its own claims in June 2017, and Shark Group’s project page presents a later specification set. None of these figures represents independent testing.

What Kiwano announced at launch

Kiwano’s June 2017 release described two rider modes and claimed the scooter could climb inclines of up to 35 percent. It also stated an IP54 weather- and dust-resistance rating and said the LG batteries were UL 2271 certified. These are maker statements; the announcement does not provide independent verification or explain test conditions for the performance claims.

Who is behind the KO1, and what remains uncertain

Kiwano’s 2017 release identified Kiwano as the maker and Oliver Evans as the inventor. Shark Group’s project page, accessed October 7, 2026, describes Kiwano as its in-house brand and says the KO1 showcases its commitment to personal electric transportation. That page identifies Shark Group as the entity behind the project; it does not by itself establish current sales or service arrangements.
