The “this year” in the headline meant 2017—not the current year. The aircraft was Kitty Hawk’s Flyer, a single-seat electric prototype designed to fly over water. Kitty Hawk said in June 2020 that it was winding down the Flyer project and retiring the vehicles, so the old announcement is not evidence that you can buy one today.
What was the Kitty Hawk Flyer?
The Flyer was an electric personal aircraft, not a road car. A 2020 catalogue from the International Civil Aviation Organization described it as a single-seat, battery-powered vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft intended to operate over water. The 2017 announcement likewise presented it as a vehicle that could fly over water. Neither source establishes road-driving capability. ICAO’s 2020 catalogue described it as unavailable for purchase at that time; Kitty Hawk’s later project announcement provides the clearer account of what happened next.
Could you buy it in 2017?
A Futurism article dated April 24, 2017, said Kitty Hawk was preparing commercial production for the end of that year. It also reported the company’s claims that the Flyer had FAA approval for flight in uncongested areas and would not require a pilot’s license. Those were statements attributed to the company in a 2017 news report, not evidence of current availability or a finding that the aircraft had FAA type certification or unrestricted permission for ordinary public flights. The original 2017 article is the source for what was promised at the time.
Can you buy a Kitty Hawk Flyer now?
Kitty Hawk said on June 3, 2020, that it was winding down the Flyer project and retiring the vehicles. The company reported that it had built and flown 111 aircraft, that more than 75 people had flown them, and that it had conducted more than 25,000 crewed and uncrewed flights. These are the manufacturer’s reported totals, not independently audited figures. Kitty Hawk’s project statement does not announce a retail channel, current price, or delivery schedule. The sources cited here establish no current way to order a Flyer.
