The 2025 U.S.-specification Kia Soul offers 24.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat when measured with the mat and no cargo board, 23.4 cubic feet with the board in its lower position, 18.7 cubic feet with the board raised, and 62.1 cubic feet with the 60:40-split rear seat folded. Kia also lists 41.1 inches of front legroom, 38.8 inches rear, and front/rear shoulder room of 55.5/54.7 inches. Those figures describe volume and passenger room—not the length, width, height, or hatch-opening dimensions needed to prove that a particular box or appliance will fit.
2025 Kia Soul cargo-space figures, configuration by configuration
Kia publishes several cargo capacities because the adjustable floor changes the usable shape of the cargo bay. Treat these as separate factory configurations, not competing claims about one trunk size.

These are Kia America specifications for the 2025 U.S. model year, not independent measurements. The apparently counterintuitive result—less listed volume with the board installed—comes from Kia measuring different physical arrangements. The raised board creates a flatter loading surface and a concealed compartment but leaves less measured volume above it. Removing the board or placing it low changes the available space.
What the floor positions do
Kia’s feature information describes a two-level cargo floorboard. In its higher setting, it can hide items below the loading surface. In the lower setting, it opens additional vertical space. The 24.2-cu.-ft. figure is the mat/no-board configuration; it should not be presented as the everyday capacity for every Soul.

With the rear seat folded, Kia lists 62.1 cubic feet of total cargo volume. The rear backrest is split 60:40, so you can fold one section while retaining a rear seating position on the other side. That is useful for long, narrow loads, but the resulting floor shape and any step between the folded seatback and cargo floor still determine whether a specific object fits.
Passenger-room dimensions
The same 2025 U.S. specification lists these cabin measurements:

For trims equipped with a sunroof, Kia lists 38.3 inches of front headroom. The cited specification does not state a separate rear headroom number for sunroof-equipped versions, so do not assume that the non-sunroof rear figure applies unchanged.

Legroom, shoulder room and headroom are standardized reference measurements; they are not a promise that every occupant will experience the same comfort. Seat position, cushion shape, child seats and the height of the person sitting in front all affect usable space.

Why cubic feet cannot answer “Will my item fit?”
Cargo volume is a three-dimensional total, usually calculated with a standardized method. It does not tell you the narrowest point between the wheel housings, the height of the hatch opening, the diagonal clearance, or the length of the floor from the hatch to the seatbacks. A box can have less volume than the published capacity and still fail to pass through the opening or fit between the wheel wells.
The official specification extracts reviewed for the Soul do not provide cargo-bay length, cargo-bay width, cargo height, or hatch-aperture dimensions. A community question asking for rear cargo dimensions in inches illustrates the practical need, but it is not verified measurement data. For a close fit, measure the actual vehicle and the actual item rather than converting cubic feet into guessed linear dimensions.
How to measure a Kia Soul for a specific load
Measure in the exact configuration you intend to use. A tape measure, a second person and a cardboard template are more useful than a capacity calculator when the fit is tight.
- Set the floor first. Record whether the board is removed, low or high. If the item must remain below a concealed floor, measure only the compartment height available in that position.
- Choose the seat arrangement. Measure with both rear seats upright, one 60:40 section folded, or both sections folded. Move the front seats to the positions required for passengers; a fully forward front seat is not a realistic travel configuration if someone must sit there.
- Measure the hatch opening. Take the narrowest horizontal width and the lowest vertical height of the opening. Also measure the diagonal from a lower corner to the opposite upper corner if the item will enter at an angle.
- Measure the floor. Measure usable length from the hatch threshold to the rear seatbacks or folded seatbacks. Measure width at the narrowest point, including the space between wheel housings rather than the wider area near the hatch.
- Check height inside the bay. Measure from the selected floor surface to the lowest obstruction on the hatch or roof. If the item is rigid, account for the hatch’s inward sweep as it closes.
- Measure the object’s real outside dimensions. Include packaging, handles, casters, protective padding and any part that cannot be removed. Measure in the orientation you plan to load it.
- Test with a template. A cardboard rectangle cut to the item’s length and width can reveal wheel-well or hatch conflicts before you lift a heavy object. Leave clearance rather than relying on a measurement that is exactly equal.
When the item will be carried with a passenger, test the 60:40 split instead of assuming the full 62.1-cu.-ft. figure is available. A long object may fit through the folded side while the remaining rear seat stays usable, but its width and tie-down position still need to be checked.

Using each cargo configuration
Rear seat up, board removed: 24.2 cubic feet
This is Kia’s largest listed rear-seat-up volume. It may be useful for tall or irregularly shaped soft luggage, but the floor is not the same as the raised-board configuration. Loose items should be secured so they cannot move toward the occupants during braking.
Rear seat up, board low: 23.4 cubic feet
The low board provides a defined loading surface while retaining more listed volume than the high setting. Use this arrangement when you want the board in place and need additional vertical room. Confirm the floor-to-hatch height with a tape measure if a rigid container is close to the limit.
Rear seat up, board high: 18.7 cubic feet
The high position prioritizes a flatter, more concealed load area. It is the smallest of Kia’s three rear-seat-up figures, so a tall suitcase or bulky package that fits with the board low may not fit here. The benefit is organization and concealment, not maximum volume.

Folding both sections creates the largest published cargo area. Because the split is 60:40, partial folding is possible when you need to carry a passenger. Measure the transition over the folded seatback, and check whether your item requires a completely flat surface; a nominal total volume does not describe every contour.

Model-year and regional qualifications
Kia America’s 2022 specification extract reports the same core cargo-volume, legroom and shoulder-room figures cited for the 2025 U.S. Soul. That does not make every Soul identical: model-year equipment, trim, sunroof and floor configuration can change the measurement or the way the space is used.
Kia’s global Soul feature page is regional rather than a U.S.-model-year specification sheet and warns that specifications may vary by region and change. If you are buying or measuring a vehicle outside the United States, use the specification page for that market and model year. Do not transfer a U.S. number to another country without checking the local vehicle.
Trim affects at least the published front headroom because Kia gives a separate 38.3-inch figure for applicable sunroof-equipped trims. The cited material does not establish different cargo capacities by trim, so cargo-volume differences should not be inferred without a trim-specific specification.

Use the capacity figures as a first filter, then use linear measurements for the decision.

- Suitcases and soft bags: Compare the tallest bag with the hatch opening and the selected floor height. Soft sides may compress, but wheels and rigid frames will not.
- Flat-pack furniture or panels: Check diagonal hatch clearance and the length with one or both 60:40 sections folded. The package may be longer than the cargo floor even when its volume is modest.
- Strollers and bulky gear: Measure the folded object, including wheels and handles, at the narrowest hatch width. Test whether the high cargo board removes needed height.
- Boxes and appliances: Use the shipping carton’s outside dimensions, not the product’s advertised dimensions. The carton must pass through the opening before the interior volume matters.
- Mobility equipment: Verify ramp angle, hatch clearance, wheel-well width and tie-down needs in person. No cited Kia figure confirms fit for a wheelchair, scooter or other specific device.
For any load that blocks the driver’s view, changes rear-seat use or approaches the hatch, prioritize safe restraint and visibility over maximizing the published volume.
Common mistakes when reading Soul dimensions
- Quoting one unqualified cargo number: Saying “the Soul has 24.2 cubic feet” hides the board and mat conditions. State the configuration with the number.
- Calling cubic feet a length-by-width-by-height measurement: Volume cannot reveal the hatch aperture or the narrowest interior width.
- Assuming the raised floor is the biggest space: Kia’s listed 18.7 cubic feet in the high position is lower than the 23.4 cubic feet in the low position and 24.2 cubic feet with no board.
- Transferring numbers between markets: Regional specifications can differ, and Kia says they may change.
- Ignoring the sunroof qualification: The 38.3-inch front-headroom figure applies to applicable sunroof trims; the 39.9-inch front figure is for versions without a sunroof.
- Using a community measurement as an official specification: The cited forum wording identifies a need for linear dimensions but does not verify them.
A practical decision rule
For shopping and trip planning, start with the seat configuration you will actually use. If the rear bench stays upright, use 18.7, 23.4 or 24.2 cubic feet only as a rough comparison tied to the floor position. If one passenger must remain in back, fold the appropriate 40-percent or 60-percent section and measure the remaining path. If both sections fold, use 62.1 cubic feet as the manufacturer’s total, then verify the hatch opening, floor length, wheel-well width and height against the object.
This approach separates what Kia has established—the standardized capacities and cabin reference dimensions—from what must be established at the vehicle: the linear clearances for your particular load.
