Toyota says the 2026 Highlander seats seven when equipped with second-row captain’s chairs. An optional second-row bench is available on the XLE and Limited gas grades and on the XLE hybrid. With that bench, capacity rises to eight. The bench is therefore not a universal Highlander feature; confirm it on the window sticker for the vehicle you are considering. Toyota’s 2026 lineup has gas XLE, XSE, Limited and Platinum grades, plus XLE, Limited and Platinum hybrid grades.

Captain’s chairs make it easier for children to reach the third row and create a walk-through between the seats, but they remove one passenger position. A bench maximizes people capacity and can be useful when three children must share the second row, but access to the third row is less convenient. Decide which problem you have most often before comparing prices.
What is established about 2026 Sorento seating?
A search result for Kia’s 2026 Sorento specification page identifies both seven-passenger and six-passenger configurations, but the Kia Media page itself was not retrievable. Kia’s live general specifications page now displays 2027 content and cannot establish 2026, trim-by-trim seating. Verify the exact 2026 Sorento’s seat count, second-row bench or captain’s chairs and available packages on the vehicle’s build sheet.

That tool is useful for an initial specification check, but its values are tied to the displayed configurations rather than every trim. Can adults use the third row?
Neither SUV should be treated as a full-time adult shuttle simply because it has three rows. In Edmunds’ 2025 hybrid comparison, both third rows and the cargo areas behind them were limited compared with larger three-row SUVs. Edmunds judged the rearmost seats more suitable for smaller passengers, older children and teens than for three adults on long trips. That is an independent 2025 observation, not a 2026 test, but it is a realistic expectation for this vehicle size.
Car and Driver’s displayed comparison lists 41.7 inches of second-row legroom for the Sorento versus 38.7 inches for the Highlander, and 29.6 inches of third-row legroom versus 28.0 inches. Because the tool’s trims are not necessarily identical to the vehicles at your dealer, use the numbers as a prompt to test the exact versions rather than as a guarantee.
Cargo with all rows occupied
For a family, the space behind the third row often matters more than maximum cargo volume with every seat folded. Edmunds reported a Highlander advantage in cargo room with the third row raised in its 2025 hybrid assessment, while the Sorento offered an advantage in third-row legroom and headroom. Toyota publishes 84.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity with the second and third rows folded for the 2026 Highlander. A directly comparable, verified 2026 Sorento cargo figure was not available here.

2026 Highlander gas and hybrid specifications
Toyota estimates 24 mpg combined for 2026 gas Highlander models. The 2026 Highlander Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two motor-generators, producing 243 net combined horsepower. Toyota estimates 35 mpg combined for the hybrid and lists towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds. These are manufacturer estimates and ratings; confirm the rating for the exact vehicle, hitch equipment and trailer, and follow the owner’s manual before towing.
AWD is standard across the entire 2026 Highlander lineup, including gas and hybrid grades. Toyota describes the change this way: “For 2026, Highlander makes All Wheel Drive standard on gas models and a simplified grade structure, with feature-packed models available in four gas and three hybrid grades.” This is a manufacturer statement from Toyota USA’s September 5, 2025 announcement, not an independent evaluation.
What the available Sorento hybrid test shows—and does not show
The independent comparison available for this topic concerns 2025 hybrids. As republished by AP, Edmunds cited 36 mpg combined for a Sorento Hybrid with front-wheel drive (FWD), 34 mpg for Sorento Hybrid AWD and 35 mpg for the Highlander Hybrid with AWD. The EPA estimates and model-year specifications should be checked for any 2026 Sorento you price; the 2025 figures cannot be carried forward automatically.
In Edmunds’ 2025 testing, the Sorento Hybrid AWD reached 60 mph in 7.6 seconds, compared with 8.2 seconds for the Highlander Hybrid. Edmunds described the Sorento’s six-speed automatic as shifting smoothly and noted engine drone from the Toyota’s continuously variable transmission (CVT) during hard acceleration. Those impressions belong to the tested 2025 vehicles and are not 2026 test results.

Price: compare equivalent trims, not advertising tiles
Toyota announced U.S. 2026 starting MSRPs of $45,270 for the gas XLE and $47,020 for the hybrid XLE, excluding dealer processing and handling. Toyota said 2026 vehicles were expected at U.S. dealerships beginning in November 2025. Destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees, incentives and actual transaction prices can change the amount you pay, so obtain a written quote for your location.

Car and Driver’s live comparison displayed $33,885 for its Sorento selection and $47,865 for its Highlander selection. Those are not matched trim or equipment levels and should not be used to claim that one model is universally cheaper. The displayed vehicles may differ in drivetrain, seating and included features from the starting MSRPs in Toyota’s announcement.
For historical context only, AP’s 2025 republication of Edmunds’ hybrid comparison listed a $40,105 Sorento Hybrid and a $48,315 Highlander Hybrid at the time of that article. Neither is a 2026 price. The right shopping comparison is a Sorento and Highlander with the same drivetrain, similar safety and convenience equipment, the same number of seats and comparable destination charges.
Does the hybrid premium pay back?
Start with your annual mileage and the type of driving you do. Toyota’s published difference between the 2026 gas and hybrid XLE starting prices is $1,750, before fees and incentives. A hybrid may make more sense for high-mileage urban or suburban driving, while a lower-mileage household should calculate fuel savings rather than assume the premium will be recovered. Use your own fuel price, mileage and financing terms; no ownership-cost or payback study is established by the available sources.

Toyota’s 2026 announcement lists a 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and eight-year/100,000-mile coverage for covered hybrid-related components, whichever comes first. Read the warranty booklet for exclusions, maintenance requirements and transfer rules.
Kia’s live Sorento specifications page states 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain and 5-year/60,000-mile basic coverage, but that page has rolled to 2027 content. It is not proof of the 2026 Sorento warranty. Ask the dealer for the 2026 Kia warranty guide and confirm whether coverage changes for a second owner, commercial use or particular hybrid components before using warranty length as a deciding factor.
Safety and driver assistance: do not declare a winner without the exact trim
Toyota says Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ is standard on the 2026 Highlander. The available Kia page lists safety equipment but now represents 2027 content. A complete, directly comparable 2026 trim-by-trim equipment table was not established, and the sources do not provide directly comparable 2026 IIHS or NHTSA crash-test ratings for both vehicles.

Before signing, check the current IIHS and NHTSA results for the model year and verify the window sticker for features such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance and parking sensors. Standard equipment can change by grade, package and production date. A feature listed for a higher trim is not evidence that it is standard on the base model.

When the Sorento’s size can help
A smaller exterior footprint can make a Sorento easier to place in a tight garage, urban parking space or narrow school pickup lane. The benefit is practical rather than numerical here because a verified 2026 dimension table was not available. Sit in the driver’s seat, check sightlines over the shoulder and test the turning path at the places you use most.
When the Highlander’s standard AWD and capacity help
The Highlander’s standard AWD removes a drivetrain decision: every 2026 grade has it. Both vehicles can fit this pattern, but try the third row with the passengers who will actually use it and load your normal luggage behind it. Edmunds’ 2025 assessment suggests treating both rearmost rows as occasional seating for smaller passengers or older children rather than adult-first spaces.

You drive long distances and want a hybrid
Compare the exact 2026 Sorento Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid window stickers, EPA ratings and prices. Toyota’s 2026 published estimate is 35 mpg combined, while the independent Sorento figures available here are from 2025. The earlier test found quicker Sorento acceleration, but it cannot predict 2026 performance or fuel economy.
You tow a small trailer
The 2026 Highlander Hybrid has Toyota’s published rating of up to 3,500 pounds. Confirm the exact vehicle’s tow rating, tongue-weight limit, hitch installation and trailer-brake requirements. Do not infer a Sorento 2026 rating from an older model or an unspecific web listing.
