The difference is calculated by subtracting the selected Sorento trim’s listed starting price from the itemized on-road quote for your registration location. In formula form: on-road price − selected trim’s listed starting price = difference. There is no single all-India on-road figure because road tax, registration, insurance and other applicable charges depend on the state or union territory, the exact variant and the quote date.
Kia India currently displays six Sorento trim prices as “Starting MSRP*”: ₹27,99,000 for HTE, ₹29,49,000 for HTE(O), ₹32,49,000 for HTK, ₹33,49,000 for HTK(A), ₹37,49,000 for HTX and ₹38,49,000 for HTX(A). Treat those as the manufacturer page’s starting prices for the corresponding trims, not as a drive-away amount. For an exact total, obtain a current, itemized written quote from a Kia dealer serving the place where you will register the vehicle.

What the two prices mean
Ex-showroom or starting MSRP
An ex-showroom price is the vehicle price before the costs needed to put the car on the road in a particular jurisdiction. Kia’s current India Sorento trim page labels its displayed figures “Starting MSRP*.” That wording matters: the figure is a starting price for a named trim, not a guaranteed final price for every configuration, dealer or date.

A quote for an HTX(A), for example, cannot be compared with the HTE starting price. Trim equipment differs, and a dealer may quote a vehicle with a different powertrain, option or stock specification than the one you initially selected.

On-road price
On-road price means the amount shown on a buyer-specific quote after the vehicle price and applicable registration-related costs are combined. The exact contents vary by location and by the way a dealer formats the document. A proper quote should identify the vehicle price and show the relevant road-tax or registration amount, insurance amount and any other charge separately.
Because the registering authority and local tax rules are location-specific, an on-road price in one city should not be presented as an India-wide Sorento price. Kia directs customers to a local dealer for details, which is why a written quote for your registration location is the decisive document.
Kia Sorento listed prices to use as the baseline
The following are the current displayed starting prices on Kia India’s Sorento trim page, observed in 2026. They are not a nationwide on-road schedule and should be rechecked against the live page and a dealer quote before purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

|---|---|---|
| HTE | ₹27,99,000 | Use as the baseline only for an HTE quote. |
| HTE(O) | ₹29,49,000 | Use as the baseline only for an HTE(O) quote. |
| HTK | ₹32,49,000 | Use as the baseline only for an HTK quote. |
| HTK(A) | ₹33,49,000 | Use as the baseline only for an HTK(A) quote. |

“Starting” is a qualification attached to every figure. The amount on a dealer’s current quotation can differ if Kia changes pricing, if the quoted vehicle is configured differently, or if the page and dealer system are updated at different times. Ask the dealer to identify the exact trim and the vehicle price used in the calculation.
The calculation, step by step
- Choose the exact trim. Record the complete designation—HTE, HTE(O), HTK, HTK(A), HTX or HTX(A)—and confirm any powertrain or equipment description on the quote.
- Record the matching Kia starting price. Copy the current displayed amount for that same trim. Do not use the cheapest Sorento price as a shortcut when you are buying a higher trim.
- Specify the registration location. Tell the dealer the state or union territory, and the city or registering authority where applicable. Registration location determines which local road-tax and registration entries belong in the quote.
- Request an itemized written quotation. Kia’s own guidance points customers to a local dealer. Ask for the vehicle price and every additional line to be shown separately, with the quote date and validity period.
- Check the road-tax and registration lines. Confirm whether the document shows road tax, registration charges or both, and whether any amount is an estimate pending registration.
- Check the insurance line. Note the premium, policy type, coverage limits, add-ons and policy period. An insurance estimate is not interchangeable with another policy’s price unless the coverage is comparable.
- Check other itemized charges. A quote may show entries such as TCS or other fees. Ask what each one covers and whether it is mandatory, optional or already included in another line.
- Add the quoted lines to understand the on-road total. Use the amounts in the current quote, not a city estimate copied from an older article or calculator.
- Subtract the matching listed starting price. The result is the difference between the dealer’s on-road figure and Kia’s displayed starting-price baseline: on-road quote − matching trim’s starting price = difference.
- Check for duplicate entries. Before accepting the result, ask whether a charge has already been included in the quoted vehicle price or another subtotal. Do not add the same registration, insurance or tax amount twice.
A worked calculation without pretending to know your city’s total
The arithmetic is straightforward once the quote is complete. Suppose, purely as an illustration, that a dealer gives an HTE on-road quote of ₹31,00,000 and the current matching Kia starting price is ₹27,99,000. The difference would be:
₹31,00,000 − ₹27,99,000 = ₹3,01,000
This example demonstrates the method only. It is not a Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru or any other city estimate, and it does not establish what road tax, insurance or registration will cost for an actual buyer. Replace both figures with the current numbers on your own written quote and the matching Kia trim page.

Which quote lines create the difference?
Road tax
Road tax is linked to the jurisdiction in which the vehicle is registered. The amount and calculation method can therefore change when the registration state or union territory changes. A quote should identify the authority or location used and show whether the amount is provisional or final.

Registration charges
Registration-related charges may appear as a separate line from road tax. Read the labels carefully: one document may combine items into a single registration subtotal, while another may list them individually. The only safe comparison is between itemized quotes that explain what each line contains.
Insurance
Insurance is buyer-specific even when two people purchase the same trim. Compare the premium together with the policy’s coverage, deductibles, declared value, duration and add-ons. The lowest number is not automatically the equivalent number if it represents narrower coverage. If the dealer’s figure is marked as an estimate, request the final premium and policy details before treating the on-road amount as settled.
TCS and other charges
An indicative Mumbai Sorento breakup cited in current coverage includes local road tax, an insurance estimate, TCS and registration charges. That type of breakup is useful for seeing the categories a quote may contain, but it is a third-party estimate for Mumbai under its own assumptions. It is not an official nationwide schedule or a binding price for another city. Treat every additional entry the same way: identify it, establish whether it applies to you and verify whether it is already included elsewhere.
Why a Mumbai estimate cannot answer every buyer’s question
City-based calculators are often presented as if they were universal. They are not. A Mumbai estimate uses Mumbai’s local tax and registration assumptions, while a buyer registering in another state or union territory may face different rules and amounts. Insurance can also vary with the selected policy and the information used for the estimate.
Use a city breakup as a checklist of possible categories, not as your personal drive-away price. Label any comparison with the city and date, preserve the assumptions, and replace it with the dealer’s current written quote before deciding how much cash or financing you need.
How to compare two dealer quotes properly
When dealers quote the same Sorento, compare the documents on identical terms. A lower headline can simply reflect a missing line, a different insurance policy or a different trim.
| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Exact vehicle | Trim name, powertrain and displayed vehicle price | A different trim has a different Kia starting-price baseline. |
| Registration location | State or union territory and registering city or authority | Road-tax and registration amounts are location-dependent. |
| Insurance | Premium, policy type, coverage and add-ons | Two insurance numbers may not buy equivalent protection. |
| Taxes and fees | Road tax, registration, TCS and every other named line | A missing or bundled line can make a quote look artificially low. |
| Quote date | Issue date, validity period and any price-change clause | Manufacturer pricing and dealer calculations can change. |
| Inclusions | Whether each amount is already included in a subtotal | Prevents double-counting when you recalculate the total. |
Ask both dealers to use the same trim, registration location and insurance basis. Then compare the final on-road totals and the itemized lines rather than comparing only a single “on-road” number.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the cheapest trim as the baseline
Problem: You subtract ₹27,99,000 from an HTX(A) quote because HTE is the first price shown online.
Fix: Match the baseline to the exact trim. HTX(A), for example, has a displayed starting price of ₹38,49,000, so that is the relevant Kia page figure for an HTX(A) comparison.
Calling starting MSRP an on-road price
Problem: You treat the displayed Kia amount as the amount needed to register and drive the car away.
Fix: Keep the manufacturer’s starting price as the vehicle-price baseline and obtain the local quote for taxes, registration, insurance and other applicable entries.
Applying one state’s tax to another
Problem: You copy a Mumbai breakup into a quote for a different registration location.

Comparing insurance numbers without comparing cover
Problem: You choose the lower premium even though it includes different limits or add-ons.
Fix: Compare policy details as well as price, and ask the dealer to identify whether the number is an estimate or a final premium.
Adding a charge twice
Problem: You add a registration or tax line to a subtotal that already includes it.

Relying on an old article or screenshot
Problem: You use a historical trim price or an introductory city estimate after the manufacturer has updated its listing.
Fix: Recheck Kia’s live trim page and request a current quote close to the purchase date. Record the date on which you made the calculation.

Moneycontrol reported on September 9, 2026 that Sorento deliveries had begun and described an introductory ex-showroom range of ₹27.99 lakh to ₹40.39 lakh. The current Kia trim page displays six starting prices, with HTX(A) at ₹38,49,000. Those are different source snapshots and should not be blended into one table.
For a current listed-trim comparison, use the official page’s displayed starting prices and identify them as starting MSRP. Treat the ₹27.99 lakh–₹40.39 lakh range as a dated introductory report, not as a replacement for the live manufacturer listing. If a dealer’s current quote is above or below either figure, ask which trim, equipment and price date the quote reflects.
What you can know before requesting a quote
- You can select the trim and record its current Kia-listed starting price.
- You can prepare a worksheet with separate fields for vehicle price, road tax, registration, insurance, TCS and other itemized charges.
- You can decide where the vehicle will be registered and ask the dealer to calculate for that authority.
- You can define the insurance coverage you want so competing quotes are comparable.
- You can use the subtraction formula to check the dealer’s arithmetic once the final total is supplied.
What cannot be known from the trim page alone
- The exact on-road total for an unspecified city or registration authority.
- The final insurance premium and coverage selected by the buyer.
- Whether a particular dealer quote includes, excludes or bundles a fee.
- Whether a displayed starting price has changed after the page was last checked.
- Whether a dated media report’s introductory range still matches the current dealer system.
Those unknowns are why a local written quote is required. A calculation made without the registration location and itemized amounts is only a framework, not a promised purchase price.
A buyer’s quote-check worksheet
Copy this structure into a note or spreadsheet and fill it from the same dated quotation:
| Field | Entry to record |
|---|---|
| Quote date and validity | Date issued and the date through which the dealer will honor it |
| Registration location | State or union territory, city and registering authority where known |
| Exact Sorento trim | Full trim designation and any powertrain or equipment description |
| Kia displayed starting price | Current listed amount for that same trim |
| Dealer vehicle price | Amount shown on the quotation |
| Road tax | Quoted amount and whether it is estimated or final |
| Registration charges | Every registration-related line and its description |
| Insurance | Premium, insurer or policy description, coverage and add-ons |
| TCS and other charges | Each named entry, with a note on whether it is mandatory or optional |
| On-road total | Final amount printed by the dealer |
| Calculated difference | On-road total minus the matching Kia displayed starting price |
If a dealer will not explain a line, ask for a revised quotation that does. A transparent itemization is more useful than a lower-looking total that cannot be reconciled.
When to recalculate
Recalculate whenever the trim changes, the registration location changes, the insurance coverage changes, the dealer issues a new quote or the manufacturer updates its listed price. Recheck immediately before booking and again before registration if the quote has a validity deadline. Keep the old and new documents so you can see exactly which line changed.
Bottom line for “How much more is on-road than ex-showroom?”
There is no single Sorento surcharge that applies to every Indian buyer. Start with the Kia-listed starting price for the exact trim, obtain an itemized quote for the place where the car will be registered, verify road tax, registration, insurance, TCS and any other named charges, then subtract the matching listed price from the quoted on-road total. That difference is buyer- and location-specific, so a current written dealer quote—not a generic city estimate—is the figure to use for your purchase decision.
