The right answer depends on the Sorento’s model year, engine, transmission, configuration, and 17-character VIN. Official U.S. notices document several different issues rather than one defect affecting every Sorento. The most consequential examples include connecting-rod-bearing wear in certain 2012–2013 vehicles, a transmission electric-oil-pump fault covered by recall 22V760, and an engine-block coolant-leak campaign for certain 2025 vehicles.

1. Connecting-rod-bearing wear in certain 2012–2013 Sorentos
What Kia’s notice identifies
Kia’s February 21, 2024 renotification for NHTSA recall 20V750 concerns certain 2012 and 2013 model-year Sorentos. The notice identifies potential excessive wear of the connecting-rod bearings. As the bearings wear, the engine can be damaged; Kia also describes an engine-compartment fire risk.
This is not a diagnosis for every engine noise. A knock, ticking sound, oil-pressure warning, stalling event, or check-engine light can have several causes. The recall notice establishes a specific risk for the VIN-defined population, so campaign eligibility should be checked before drawing a conclusion from a sound or warning alone.

Inspection and repair process
The dealer is directed to inspect the engine compartment for fuel and/or oil leaks, perform an engine test, and make repairs. If the test shows the covered damage, the remedy can include engine replacement. The dealer also installs the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update.
Kia states that, after the KSDS update, it will warrant qualifying long-block repairs for connecting-rod-bearing damage for 15 years or 150,000 miles from the vehicle’s first service, whichever comes first. The stated term applies to new and used owners, but only to qualifying repairs and the covered condition. It is not a blanket warranty for every engine failure, oil leak, or noise.

What to do if your 2012–2013 Sorento is affected
- Record the vehicle identification number and confirm that recall 20V750 is listed for that VIN.
- Ask an authorized Kia dealer to verify whether the inspection, KSDS update, and any required repair are complete.
- If you notice severe knocking, smoke, a burning smell, an oil or fuel leak, or a warning indicating an unsafe engine condition, stop in a safe place and request assistance rather than continuing to drive.
- Keep the repair order showing the test result, software update, and any engine work. Those records help establish whether a later repair is within the stated coverage.
2. Transmission electric-oil-pump fault covered by recall 22V760
The warning pattern
Kia’s NHTSA-hosted owner notice for recall 22V760 describes a fault in the transmission’s electric oil pump. The notice says the fault can illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (check-engine light), display “stop safely immediately” on the instrument cluster, and sound an audible chime. It further describes possible loss of motive power after 20–30 seconds of normal driving.
The exact combination of lights, message, and chime matters. A check-engine light by itself does not prove that this recall condition is present. Conversely, the specified stop message and chime should not be treated as a routine service reminder.

Kia’s owner notice states: “If you experience audible ‘chimes’, the ‘stop safely immediately’ message on the instrument cluster and/or illumination of the malfunction indicator light (MIL), stop your vehicle at a safe location immediately and turn off the engine.” After stopping, contact an authorized Kia dealer and explain that the recall warning pattern appeared. Arrange transportation or towing according to the dealer’s instructions; do not attempt to continue a normal trip because the notice describes loss of motive power.
Dealer remedy
The remedy is performed at no charge for an eligible vehicle. The dealer inspects the transmission, replaces it if necessary, and reprograms the transmission control unit. The notice does not make every Sorento transmission part of the campaign. Confirm the affected year and configuration through the VIN and ask whether the remedy remains open.
3. Engine-block coolant leakage in certain 2025 Sorentos
How the condition develops
A Kia voluntary service-campaign notice dated November 12, 2025 identifies a manufacturing error that may fracture the engine block in certain 2025 Sorentos. A fractured block can leak coolant. If coolant loss continues, the vehicle may display an “Engine Overheated” warning and the engine can be damaged by continued operation.

This campaign is different from a universal 2025-model diagnosis. The notice applies only to the VIN population Kia identifies. A coolant leak on a Sorento outside that population still needs diagnosis, but the campaign remedy cannot be assumed without VIN confirmation.

- When an “Engine Overheated” warning appears, follow the overheating instructions in the owner’s manual.
- Pull off the road as soon as it is safe. Avoid opening a hot cooling system or continuing to drive to a destination.
- Contact an authorized Kia dealer and arrange towing, as directed by the campaign notice.
- Ask the dealer to verify campaign eligibility and document the coolant leak, warning, and engine condition.
Kia says the dealer will replace the engine free of charge under the campaign for an included VIN. A voluntary service campaign may not appear in a safety-recall-only search, so check both the VIN record and Kia’s campaign information.
How to check whether a Sorento recall or campaign is still open
Use the 17-character VIN
Find the 17-character VIN on the vehicle and registration documents, then use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN lookup or ask a Kia dealer to check it. The result is vehicle-specific and is the only reliable way to determine whether one of the documented remedies applies to your Sorento.
- Enter the complete VIN exactly as shown; a single incorrect character can return the wrong record.
- Review every unrepaired safety recall, not just the newest entry.
- Ask the dealer to check Kia service campaigns as well as safety recalls, including the 2025 engine-block campaign.
- Confirm whether a listed remedy is open, completed, or awaiting parts, and request the completion date for work already performed.
- Keep the dealer’s repair order and campaign number with the vehicle records.
Know what a VIN search does and does not show
NHTSA distinguishes a VIN lookup from a year/make/model search. A VIN result reports unrepaired recalls for that particular vehicle. A broader search can show general recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications, but it does not establish that your vehicle is included.
NHTSA also cautions that VIN results may omit recalls already repaired, newly announced recalls whose VIN population is still being identified, non-safety customer campaigns, international recalls, and other categories. That is why a dealer campaign check is important when a symptom matches a Kia service notice.

How to interpret common Sorento symptoms
“My Sorento has a check-engine light”
A check-engine light is a symptom, not a diagnosis. On vehicles covered by recall 22V760, Kia lists it alongside the “stop safely immediately” message and chime. If those additional warnings appear, follow the recall’s immediate-stop instruction. If the light appears alone, avoid guessing at the cause: record any other messages, have the vehicle scanned and inspected by a qualified repairer, and check the VIN for open campaigns.
“My Sorento says stop safely immediately”
Treat the message and associated chime as an urgent driving instruction. Move to a safe location, shut off the engine, and contact an authorized Kia dealer. The transmission notice specifically warns that motive power may be lost after 20–30 seconds of normal driving.
“My Sorento is overheating or losing coolant”
Follow the owner’s-manual overheating procedure, pull over safely, and arrange towing. For certain 2025 vehicles, Kia identifies a fractured engine block as a possible source and specifies engine replacement through the campaign. Do not open a pressurized cooling system while it is hot.
“My Sorento engine is knocking”
Engine knocking can indicate serious damage, but the sound alone cannot establish connecting-rod-bearing wear. Owners of certain 2012–2013 vehicles should have the VIN checked for recall 20V750 and request the specified engine test. Severe noise, smoke, a burning smell, or an oil or fuel leak warrants stopping and arranging assistance.

Recalls, service campaigns, complaints, and investigations are not the same
An owner complaint is a report submitted by an owner or another party. NHTSA publishes complaints with personally identifying information removed. Similar complaints can contribute to screening or an investigation, but one complaint is not a confirmed defect determination, a failure-rate estimate, or proof that all vehicles of that model year are affected.

A manufacturer communication can describe a condition or recommended action without being a safety recall. The 2025 coolant-leak notice is a voluntary service campaign, which is why a safety-recall-only result may not display it. A formal safety recall has a defined remedy and population, while an investigation is an agency process that may or may not lead to a recall.
Complaint totals should not be used as a reliability ranking without accounting for model-year exposure, vehicle age, sales volume, and a defined denominator. No harmonized Sorento failure-rate analysis is established here.
What repairs should cost an eligible owner
The remedies described in the cited Kia notices are provided at no charge when the vehicle is included and the condition meets the campaign requirements. That includes the recall 22V760 inspection, necessary transmission replacement, and transmission-control-unit programming; the 2012–2013 recall inspection, KSDS update, and qualifying repair under the stated coverage; and the 2025 campaign engine replacement.
Do not pay for a replacement engine, transmission, sensor, software update, or generic part before the VIN and diagnosis are confirmed. A non-campaign repair may be necessary for an unrelated fault, but an eligible recall remedy should not be presented as an owner-paid upgrade.
Used-Sorento purchase and ownership checklist
- Write down the VIN before buying or accepting a used Sorento.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA and ask a Kia dealer for both recall and service-campaign history.
- For a 2012–2013 vehicle, verify the KSDS update and whether recall 20V750 inspection or engine work was completed.
- For any vehicle showing a stop-immediately message, chime, or unexplained loss of power, require diagnosis before driving it normally.
- For a 2025 vehicle with coolant loss or an overheating warning, verify the engine-block campaign status and insist on documented repair.
- Ask for invoices and campaign completion records rather than relying on a seller’s verbal assurance.
Limits of a model-wide problem list
The documented notices do not provide a complete failure probability for every Sorento year, engine, or transmission. They also do not establish repair prices for problems outside the campaigns, a worldwide defect list, or a universal diagnostic procedure. U.S. campaign eligibility may differ in other markets; owners outside the United States should use their market’s official safety authority and Kia distributor.
Databases and campaign populations can change as recalls are repaired, newly announced vehicles are identified, or Kia updates its records. Recheck the VIN when symptoms appear, when buying a used vehicle, and before paying for work that might be covered.
