For a buyer in Germany, the choice comes down to one question: which Model Y trim are you actually comparing? The Kia EV5 GT is a single, fixed AWD specification with a published price of €59,990. The Tesla Model Y is a family of variants, and its range, acceleration and likely price shift with each one. If you want a Kia with 306 PS, a 1,800 kg towing rating and a Kia dealer relationship, the EV5 GT is the simpler buy. If you want the longest official range, the quickest acceleration, or Tesla’s route-planning and Supercharger ecosystem, the Model Y is the stronger case, provided the specific trim fits your budget. The published figures below do not settle ride comfort, real-world efficiency, reliability or running costs, so those points belong in a test drive and a local cost check.
Start with the market and the trim
The title does not name a country, so this comparison is anchored to official German listings from Kia Germany and Tesla Germany. Prices, incentives, equipment and warranty terms change by market, and the figures in this article should not be carried over to another country without checking.
- Kia EV5 GT is not the same as the EV5 GT-Line. Kia uses different grade names in different regional lineups. The Australian brochure cited below describes an EV5 AWD Long Range variant for that market, and it should not be read as a description of the German GT.
- Prices differ by country. Kia France lists the EV5 GT at €58,290, while Kia Germany lists €59,990. Use the price from your own market and dealer quote only.
- “Tesla Model Y” covers several variants. Tesla Germany’s official page lists RWD, Long Range RWD, Premium AWD and Performance versions with different range and acceleration figures. Pick one before comparing.
Headline specifications
The table below uses only values stated on the official German pages for each brand, plus one Australian brochure value where noted. “Not stated” means the cited page does not give that figure; it does not mean the car lacks the feature.
| Item | Kia EV5 GT (Germany, Kia Germany page) | Tesla Model Y (Germany, Tesla Germany page, by trim) |
|---|---|---|
| Drivetrain | AWD | RWD; Long Range RWD; Premium AWD; Performance |
| Battery | 81.4 kWh | Not stated on the cited page |
| Power | 225 kW / 306 PS | Not stated on the cited page |
| WLTP range (manufacturer figure) | Up to 476 km | RWD 525 km; Long Range RWD 603 km; Premium AWD 622 km; Performance 580 km |
| 0–100 km/h (manufacturer figure) | 6.2 s | RWD 5.6 s; Long Range RWD 5.6 s; Performance 3.5 s; Premium AWD not stated for that trim on the cited page |
| Top speed | 180 km/h | Not stated on the cited page |
| Towing capacity | 1,800 kg | Not stated on the cited page |
| Listed price | €59,990 (Kia Germany listing) | Not stated on the cited page; price depends on trim and configuration |
Kia’s page is for the German EV5 GT; Tesla’s page lists several Model Y trims in one place, so a like-for-like comparison means picking the Tesla row that matches the budget and use case.

Range: what the WLTP figures do and do not tell you
Both brands quote WLTP figures, which are certification values measured under a standard test cycle. They are useful for comparing one car against another under the same rules, but they are not a promise for a given trip. Tesla’s German Model Y page states, in English rendering, that “the WLTP standard can be helpful for comparing the range of electric vehicles,” and it cautions that actual range varies with speed, weather, and elevation or topography. The same caution applies to the Kia figure of up to 476 km, which is a maximum rather than a typical result.
Because Tesla lists a higher WLTP figure on its Long Range and Premium AWD versions than Kia does for the EV5 GT, the Model Y has the advantage on paper if you buy one of those trims. On the RWD trim, the Model Y’s listed range is higher than the Kia’s maximum, but the RWD version is not a like-for-like match for an AWD Kia, so compare the drivetrain you actually intend to buy.

Charging on a road trip
Kia and Tesla publish charging figures in different formats, and they are not measured the same way. Read each one as a marketing claim with conditions attached.
Kia EV5 GT
Kia Germany states that DC charging from 10% to 80% takes 30 minutes. The page also says peak charging requires a 400 V fast charger rated at least 150 kW. Added range depends on the starting state of charge, battery temperature, the charger used, driving style and consumption, so a 30-minute stop should be read as a best-case planning figure for a suitable station.

Tesla Model Y
Tesla Germany lists a maximum Supercharger rate of 250 kW. For specified versions, the page gives up to 257 or 267 km of added range in 15 minutes, and it notes that this figure assumes constant-speed travel. Tesla also says its route planning can include Supercharger stops. The 15-minute distance figure and Kia’s 10–80% time do not measure the same thing, so they cannot be ranked against each other directly.
Home charging on the Kia side
The Australian MY26 EV5 brochure lists Type 2 AC and CCS Type 2 DC connections for that market and an 11 kW three-phase onboard AC charger for the AWD Long Range variant. The same brochure gives approximate DC 10–80% times of 72 minutes on a 50 kW charger and 38 minutes on a 350 kW charger. These are Australian figures for a different grade. Before buying a home wallbox, confirm the German EV5 GT’s socket type and onboard charger rating in Kia’s German documentation.

Space and family use
Cargo and length figures come from different markets and measurement conventions, so they are not directly comparable. The Kia figures below are from the Australian brochure; the Tesla length and cargo figures are from the German page.
| Item | Kia EV5 (Australian MY26 brochure) | Tesla Model Y (Germany, Tesla Germany page) |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | 4,615 mm | 4,790 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,750 mm | Not stated on the cited page |
| Rear cargo, seats up | 513 L | 2,138 L cargo volume (seat state and measurement method not stated) |
| Rear cargo, seats folded | 1,714 L | Not stated separately |
| Front compartment | 67 L | Not stated on the cited page |
| Seats | Not stated in the cited brochure | Up to seven on certain Premium AWD configurations; five-seat layout on some variants |
The Model Y’s cargo figure is much larger on paper, but its measurement convention is not stated, so do not treat it as a verified advantage. For family use, the practical test is physical fit. Bring your child seats, a pushchair, and the luggage you normally carry, and check whether the seat configuration you need is available in the trim you are considering.

Price, warranty and running costs
Price
Kia Germany lists the EV5 GT at €59,990. Its lease example on the same page was valid only until 30 September 2026, so that offer is no longer available as of today and should not be used as a current payment figure. Tesla Germany’s page does not show a Model Y price in the material reviewed, so you will need a current configurator or dealer quote for the trim you want.
Warranty
- Tesla Model Y (Germany): basic vehicle coverage of four years or 80,000 km, and battery and drive unit coverage of eight years or 192,000 km, as listed on Tesla Germany’s page.
- Kia EV5 GT (Germany): the cited material does not state the warranty terms for the German EV5 GT. Ask your Kia dealer for the written terms before comparing.
Running costs
A reliable cost comparison needs local insurance quotes, your electricity tariff, the service schedule for each brand, expected depreciation, finance terms and your annual mileage. The published figures here do not include these items, so no claim about which car is cheaper to own is supported.
Which one should you buy?
Use the following checklist to decide.
- Choose the Kia EV5 GT if you want a single AWD specification with 306 PS, a 1,800 kg towing rating (as stated by Kia), and the €59,990 price fits your budget in your country.
- Choose a Model Y if the trim you need offers the range or acceleration you want, you value Tesla’s route planning and Supercharger access, and the local price for that trim is competitive.
- Check before you sign: whether the car’s seat layout suits your family, whether your home or workplace charging matches the car’s socket and onboard charger, and whether your local warranty and lease or finance terms match the figures above.
- Test drive both cars to judge ride comfort, seat support, visibility, cabin noise and infotainment usability. None of these are established by the manufacturer figures in this article.
Manufacturer specifications can narrow the field, but they cannot tell you which SUV will feel better on your daily drive. Make that call after driving both, using a quote for the exact trim you intend to buy.
