Choose the Kia EV3 if you want the option of substantially more official range and a newer battery choice; choose the Kia Niro EV if its established 64.8 kWh specification, available trim and current deal fit your driving better. Kia UK lists the EV3 with 58.3 kWh Standard Range and 81.4 kWh Long Range batteries, giving up to 270 and 375 miles respectively on the combined WLTP test. The Niro EV brochure lists a 64.8 kWh battery and up to 285 miles WLTP. Those are laboratory figures, not promises of the miles you will achieve on every journey, and current UK price, stock, equipment and finance terms must be checked with Kia or a dealer before you decide.
The short answer: EV3 for maximum range choice, Niro EV for a simpler specification decision
The EV3 and Niro EV are both electric SUVs for UK buyers, but the published specifications point to different priorities. The EV3 offers two battery sizes: 58.3 kWh in Standard Range form and 81.4 kWh in Long Range form. Kia UK’s specification lists combined WLTP ranges of up to 270 miles and 375 miles respectively. The Niro EV uses a 64.8 kWh battery and is listed at up to 285 miles combined WLTP.

That makes the EV3 Long Range the clear leader on the published range number, while the Niro EV sits closer to the EV3 Standard Range. The EV3 also gives you a choice between avoiding the extra cost and weight of a larger battery or paying for more distance between charging stops. However, range is only one buying criterion. Your home-charging situation, regular routes, public charging access, trim and wheel choice, purchase price and local availability can outweigh a laboratory advantage.

Range and battery choice
EV3: two batteries for two different use cases
Kia UK’s EV3 specification lists a 58.3 kWh Standard Range battery and an 81.4 kWh Long Range battery. The quoted combined WLTP figures are up to 270 miles for Standard Range and up to 375 miles for Long Range. Kia also notes that wheel and trim configurations produce different values, so the headline maximum may not apply to every version in a dealer’s showroom.
The useful decision is not simply “270 versus 375”. Standard Range can be the rational option if most journeys are local or regional and you can charge at home. Long Range is aimed at drivers who regularly cover long motorway distances, have limited charging opportunities or want a larger buffer before stopping. The larger battery does not remove the need to plan charging, and its additional capacity may affect the purchase price and efficiency of a particular trim, details that must be confirmed in the live UK specification.
Niro EV: one 64.8 kWh battery and up to 285 miles WLTP
Kia UK’s Niro EV brochure describes a 64.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and up to 285 miles in the combined WLTP cycle. That places its published maximum slightly above the EV3 Standard Range figure and well below the EV3 Long Range maximum. Kia’s fleet overview also quotes up to 285 miles.

Because the Niro EV figure comes from Kia’s published material and the EV3 numbers come from the current EV3 specification, compare them on the same combined WLTP basis, not as guaranteed real-world mileage. A vehicle’s exact wheel and trim configuration can alter the certified result.
Why WLTP is not your guaranteed journey distance
Kia UK warns that “The individual driving style and other factors, such as speed, outside temperature, topography and the use of electricity-consuming devices/units, have an influence on the real-life range and can possibly reduce it.” In practical terms, motorway speed, winter temperatures, hills, heating or air conditioning and payload can all reduce the distance available between charges. No independent real-world test result establishes a definitive winner between these two cars.

How quickly do the EV3 and Niro EV charge?
DC rapid charging: EV3 has the shorter published stop
Kia UK’s EV3 table gives a 10–80% DC time of 29 minutes for the 58.3 kWh version when using a 101 kW charger, and 31 minutes for the 81.4 kWh version on a 128 kW charger. The different charger ratings matter: these are not equivalent conditions and should not be interpreted as a laboratory head-to-head test.
For the Niro EV, Kia’s brochure states 43 minutes for 10–80% with a suitable DC fast charger. Kia’s UK fleet overview states 45 minutes for the same percentage window. Report the Niro EV as approximately 43–45 minutes rather than silently choosing one number; the discrepancy is between two official Kia sources.

| EV3 Long Range | 31 minutes | 128 kW charger |
| Niro EV | Approximately 43–45 minutes | Suitable DC fast charger; Kia sources quote 43 and 45 minutes |
Actual public-charge time depends on the station’s delivered power, battery temperature, starting state of charge, queueing and whether the car can sustain its advertised rate. A charger labelled with a higher maximum does not guarantee that the vehicle will receive that power throughout the session.
AC and home charging
Kia UK’s home-charging guidance identifies Type 2 sockets for AC charging and gives indicative times at stated power levels. For the EV3, the guidance lists 11 kW charging in 7 hours 15 minutes for Standard Range and 5 hours 20 minutes for Long Range. For the Niro EV, it lists 9 hours 25 minutes at 7.2 kW or 6 hours 20 minutes at 11 kW.
| Vehicle/version | AC power | Indicative time |
|---|---|---|
| EV3 Standard Range | 11 kW | 7 hours 15 minutes |
| EV3 Long Range | 11 kW | 5 hours 20 minutes |
| Niro EV | 7.2 kW | 9 hours 25 minutes |
| Niro EV | 11 kW | 6 hours 20 minutes |
These are guidance figures, not a promise for every home installation. Your property may have a lower-rated supply, and the car, wallbox and electrical installation must all support the selected power. Kia’s EV3 specification also says its maximum charging speed requires an appropriate 400-volt charger and sufficient power.

Do you need a separate Type 2 cable?
A Type 2 cable may be relevant for some home or public AC setups, but neither car should be assumed to require a separately purchased cable. Check the exact vehicle’s included equipment, the connector on your wallbox or destination charger and whether that unit has a tethered cable. If you are buying a cable, match the connector type, cable length, current rating and single- or three-phase requirement to both the car and charger.

Mostly short commutes with overnight parking
If you can charge at home and your weekday mileage is modest, the EV3 Standard Range or Niro EV may both cover the routine without relying on rapid chargers. The Niro EV’s 64.8 kWh battery offers a higher published maximum than the EV3 Standard Range, while the EV3 gives you the option of selecting the larger battery if your occasional journeys justify it. Compare the actual trim prices and equipment rather than assuming the larger battery is better value.
Frequent motorway or long-distance driving
The EV3 Long Range’s up-to-375-mile combined WLTP figure gives the largest official buffer and should reduce the number of charging stops on routes where conditions are similar to the test. The Niro EV’s up-to-285-mile figure and the EV3 Standard Range’s up-to-270-mile figure imply more frequent planning on long trips. In winter or at sustained motorway speed, all three figures can fall, so use route planners and identify reliable charging sites before committing to a journey.
Drivers without dependable home charging
When you cannot charge overnight, the difference between published DC times becomes more important. The EV3’s quoted 29- or 31-minute 10–80% sessions are shorter than the Niro EV’s approximately 43–45 minutes, but a reliable charger near work or home may matter more than the theoretical minimum. Check local charger availability, payment methods, opening hours and typical occupancy at the times you travel.
Mixed family use and irregular travel
For school runs, shopping, commuting and occasional holidays, choose the battery and trim that fit the dominant pattern. Do not infer a space advantage from the SUV body styles: the supplied UK material does not provide matched, current boot-volume and passenger measurements for both vehicles. If luggage capacity or rear-seat space is decisive, inspect both cars and compare the model-year specification sheets directly.

Price, trim and availability: what is not safe to assume
Current like-for-like UK purchase prices were not established in the available material. Do not use an old launch price as if it were today’s transaction price. EV pricing changes with model year, trim, dealer support, finance rate, stock and manufacturer campaigns.
When comparing a specific EV3 with a specific Niro EV, record the following in the same worksheet:
- Model year and exact trim name.
- Battery size and certified WLTP figure for that trim and wheel design.
- On-the-road price, delivery charges and any dealer discount.
- Cash price versus the total amount payable under finance.
- Included charging equipment and optional accessories.
- Availability date and whether the car is factory order or in stock.
- Any current UK incentive or benefit relevant to your circumstances.
Equipment, trim availability, warranty details and finance offers are volatile. Confirm them on Kia UK’s current pages and with a UK dealer before placing an order.
How to make a route-based choice
- Measure your normal week. Note weekday mileage, the longest regular trip and how often you drive beyond your usual area.
- Mark your charging locations. Identify whether you can install or use an overnight AC point and list dependable public chargers on your frequent routes.
- Choose a range buffer. Allow for cold weather, motorway speed, hills and heating rather than planning to arrive with a nearly empty battery.
- Compare equivalent cars. Match battery, trim, wheel size, equipment and model year before comparing prices.
- Check the charging conditions. Keep the stated charger power and 10–80% window attached to every charging-time claim.
- Inspect practicality. Take the child seats, luggage or equipment you actually carry to a dealer; do not rely on an unverified boot-volume assumption.
- Verify the final offer. Get written confirmation of price, finance total, included cable, delivery timing and the exact certified specification.
Advantages and compromises at a glance
| Priority | More favourable published case | Why it matters | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum official range | EV3 Long Range | Up to 375 miles combined WLTP | Trim and wheels affect the figure; real range varies |
| Choice of battery size | EV3 | 58.3 kWh or 81.4 kWh | Confirm availability and price of the chosen version |
| Published 10–80% DC time | EV3 | 29 or 31 minutes under stated charger conditions | Not a controlled comparison with the Niro EV |
| Single mid-size battery option | Niro EV | 64.8 kWh and up to 285 miles WLTP | Brochure and fleet page quote different DC times |
| Home charging | Depends on installation | Both use Type 2 AC charging guidance | Power available at the property determines the result |
| Current value | Not established | Must be calculated from today’s offer | Compare like-for-like UK prices and finance terms |
So, is the EV3 worth choosing over the Niro EV?
Choose the EV3 Long Range when covering long distances between charges is your overriding requirement and the current price and availability make sense. Choose the EV3 Standard Range when you want the newer EV3 option but can live with a published maximum of up to 270 miles and have convenient home charging.
Choose the Niro EV when its 64.8 kWh, up-to-285-mile specification, available equipment and current dealer offer suit your routes. Its published range is close to the EV3 Standard Range, but its official DC charging figures are slower and vary between Kia sources at approximately 43–45 minutes for 10–80%.
There is no evidence here for a universal winner on comfort, luggage space, real-world efficiency or purchase value. Those decisions require a current UK specification, an inspection and a written quote. The defensible conclusion from the published data is narrower: the EV3 offers more battery and range choice and shorter stated DC sessions, while the Niro EV remains a credible option for buyers whose everyday pattern, preferred trim and available deal align with its single 64.8 kWh configuration.
