Kia Dealer-Portal Flaw Could Have Exposed Millions of Connected Cars—What Researchers Actually Found

Researchers demonstrated a real Kia dealer-portal and API flaw that could expose owner data and control connected features. It was reportedly fixed before disclosure, and there is no evidence that millions of cars were actually hacked.

The Kia security story was real, but “millions of cars were hacked” is not. In 2024, security researchers demonstrated that a weakness in Kia’s dealer-facing web systems could let an attacker use a vehicle identifier such as a license plate to access backend functions, retrieve owner information, add an unauthorized user, and control certain connected features on compatible vehicles.

The flaw was reportedly fixed before public disclosure on September 20, 2024. The researchers estimated that about 15.5 million vehicles could have been affected, but that was an estimate of potential exposure—not a confirmed count of compromised cars. The available reporting also provides no evidence of mass criminal exploitation of this specific vulnerability.

What happened?

Researchers led by Sam Curry reported discovering the Kia issue on June 11, 2024. Their technical write-up described a chain of weaknesses spanning Kia’s dealer portal, backend application programming interfaces (APIs), and owner-service systems.

This was primarily an authorization and account-linking failure. It was not a universal defect in Kia’s ignition system, and it did not give an attacker the ability to remotely steer or drive a car.

At a high level, the researchers said an attacker could:

  1. Create or authenticate to a dealer-related account.
  2. Obtain authorization to use dealer API functions.
  3. Look up vehicle and customer information.
  4. Abuse vehicle-enrollment or account-management functions.
  5. Associate an attacker-controlled account with a target vehicle.
  6. Use ordinary connected-car commands through Kia’s backend.

The license plate was reportedly the starting identifier in the demonstration. It was not necessarily the only information or action required. The attack also involved account and API operations, vehicle identifiers, and the account-linking workflow. Calling it a “license-plate hack” is useful shorthand, but it can make the exploit sound simpler than the underlying chain of authorization failures.

The researchers said the automated workflow could take roughly 30 seconds after the vehicle identifier was entered.

What could an attacker do?

The demonstrated capabilities varied by vehicle, hardware, model, trim, region, and connected-service support. The researchers reported the ability to perform functions including:

Capability Risk Important limitation
Locate the vehicle Privacy, surveillance, and stalking risk Required compatible connected-service hardware and backend access.
Retrieve owner information Exposure of a name, phone number, email address, and physical address The returned information depended on what the backend made available.
Add an unauthorized user Potentially persistent access to the vehicle’s connected services The account-linking process had to complete successfully.
Lock or unlock doors Physical-access and personal-safety risk Available only on vehicles supporting the relevant remote feature.
Start or disable the starter Remote vehicle-control risk Not every model supports the function, and it is not remote driving.
Sound the horn or operate lights Nuisance, disruption, or attention-drawing control Availability varied by vehicle and connected feature set.

The owner-data exposure deserves as much attention as the remote commands. An attacker who could silently add an account might retain access without an obvious sign such as a forced entry or damaged ignition. Location data and a physical address can create risks that go well beyond inconvenience.

Did this let someone take over the car?

It allowed what is more accurately described as a connected-feature takeover, not complete control of the vehicle.

The reported technique did not allow an attacker to steer, accelerate, or operate a Kia as if sitting in the driver’s seat. “Hack cars” in the headlines refers to abusing internet-connected functions such as location, door locks, remote starting, horn, and lights.

That distinction matters. A cloud-service vulnerability can still be serious without being a remote-driving vulnerability. Unauthorized location tracking, personal-data exposure, account persistence, and door control are meaningful security problems even when the vehicle cannot be driven remotely.

Did the vehicle need an active Kia Connect subscription?

Sam Curry’s report said the attack worked on affected, hardware-equipped vehicles regardless of whether the vehicle had an active Kia Connect subscription. That is a researcher-reported finding, not a universal condition independently confirmed by Kia in the public material cited here.

“No active subscription” and “no connected-car capability” are not the same thing. A vehicle may contain compatible telematics hardware even if a trial or paid service is inactive. Conversely, model year, trim, market, regional rules, service eligibility, and backend changes can affect which functions are available.

Kia’s connected-service availability information and Kia Connect updates page show why it is unsafe to apply the finding to every Kia worldwide. Some availability also varies by geography, including regional limitations identified by Kia.

How many Kia vehicles were potentially affected?

The researchers estimated that approximately 15.5 million vehicles could have been within the potentially affected population. Their description focused broadly on vehicles manufactured after approximately 2013 with the necessary connected-service hardware.

That number requires careful wording:

  • It was an estimate from the researchers, not a confirmed Kia fleet count.
  • It does not mean 15.5 million vehicles were actually accessed.
  • It does not establish that every model, trim, country, or model year was vulnerable.
  • It does not establish that every vehicle in the estimate supported every reported command.

The most accurate summary is: the flaw could potentially have exposed about 15.5 million connected Kia vehicles, according to the researchers, but the number of vehicles actually compromised was not established.

Was the flaw exploited by criminals?

The available material supports a security-research demonstration, not a confirmed criminal campaign against Kia owners.

No evidence of mass exploitation was identified in the reviewed sources. At the same time, that is different from proving that nobody ever abused the flaw. Publicly available information does not provide a complete forensic account of whether Kia found evidence of prior misuse.

What did Kia do?

The researchers reported the vulnerability to Kia, and public reporting indicates that the relevant portal weakness was fixed before the disclosure was published on September 20, 2024. The public sources do not establish the precise patch date.

Kia’s Cybersecurity Vulnerability Reporting Program identifies U.S. Kia vehicles, Kia websites, the Owners’ Portal, and Kia Access applications as security-reporting targets. The policy does not provide an incident-specific technical bulletin for this flaw, and Kia’s U.S. policy says it does not offer monetary or non-monetary bug bounties.

What Kia owners should do now

Owners should not attempt to reproduce the exploit, probe dealer APIs, or test whether another person’s vehicle can be accessed. Kia’s security policy instructs researchers not to access other people’s data or vehicles.

  1. Use official Kia services. Sign in through the Kia Owners’ Portal or the official Kia Access app.
  2. Change a reused password. If the Kia password was used on another website, replace it with a unique password.
  3. Enable multifactor authentication if available. Availability can depend on the account, service, and region.
  4. Review linked vehicles and authorized users. Look for unfamiliar accounts, vehicles, or account activity.
  5. Remove anything you do not recognize. If the portal does not allow removal, contact Kia Connect support or a Kia dealer.
  6. Keep software current. Apply applicable vehicle, infotainment, and telematics updates. A vehicle software update is not necessarily the same as a server-side authorization fix.
  7. Clean up after a sale or transfer. Remove the vehicle from the old account and follow Kia’s transfer or deactivation process.

Do not assume that an old anti-theft update fixes this type of problem. The dealer-portal vulnerability involved online identity, authorization, and account association; it was not the same as a physical ignition weakness.

This was not the “Kia Boys” theft method

The 2024 dealer-portal vulnerability and the thefts commonly associated with the “Kia Boys” label were separate security issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
2024 dealer-portal flaw Kia Boys theft method
Online dealer-portal and API authorization problem Physical-access theft method
Could expose owner data and connected features Targeted an ignition and immobilizer weakness
Potentially involved newer connected vehicles, depending on eligibility Mainly affected certain 2011–2022 vehicles without an immobilizer
Reportedly fixed through server-side remediation before disclosure Addressed through anti-theft software and hardware measures

Kia’s announcements about the separate theft issue discuss its anti-theft software and consumer litigation resolution, as well as a theft-deterrent device for vehicles not eligible for the software upgrade. Those measures do not, by themselves, establish that an online account or telematics backend is secure.

The larger connected-car lesson

The most important lesson is not that a license plate is a universal key to a Kia. It is that modern vehicles depend on a large digital ecosystem: dealer portals, owner accounts, mobile apps, cloud APIs, telematics hardware, and third-party integrations.

A weakness in an administrative or dealer-facing system can become a consumer security problem when that system has excessive authority over vehicle records and owner accounts. Strong authentication is not enough if authorization checks do not properly verify who is allowed to link an account to a vehicle or invoke a command.

For readers evaluating a connected vehicle, the relevant question is not simply whether it has remote start or an app. It is also how the manufacturer manages identity, account recovery, authorized users, regional service eligibility, software updates, vulnerability disclosure, and access after a vehicle changes hands.
