Archer announced a planned Los Angeles air-taxi network in August 2024, with operations targeted for “as early as 2026.” But that was a target—not a guarantee that a citywide passenger service would be operating for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Archer’s May 2026 update showed certification work was still in progress and identified initial U.S. pilot operations in Florida, Texas and New York, while Los Angeles remained a planned deployment tied especially to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
What Archer proposed for Los Angeles
Archer’s original plan was to use piloted electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft, or eVTOLs, to connect airports, campuses, entertainment venues and other parts of the Los Angeles region. The company said flights could replace some one- to two-hour road journeys with trips of approximately 10 to 20 minutes.

The proposed network included:
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- The University of Southern California
- Orange County
- Santa Monica
- Hollywood Burbank Airport
- Long Beach
- Van Nuys
Archer also discussed potential vertiports near USC, Hollywood Park and SoFi Stadium, including possible collaboration with Hollywood Park and the Los Angeles Rams. USC was considering whether existing heliports could be adapted for eVTOL operations. These were proposed locations, not evidence that completed, bookable passenger facilities existed at each site.
Archer’s August 2024 announcement said it wanted the network in place ahead of major worldwide sporting events, including the 2026 World Cup, the 2027 Super Bowl and the 2028 Olympics. The company’s wording was “as early as 2026,” which is materially different from promising a fixed launch date.

Was Archer’s service available for the 2026 World Cup?
The available evidence does not establish that a full public Archer air-taxi network operated in Los Angeles during the World Cup, which ran from June 11 through July 19, 2026.
Los Angeles hosted matches at SoFi Stadium on June 12, 15, 18, 21, 25 and 28, and July 2 and 10. Archer’s relationship with the event was real: in October 2025, the company was named an official Los Angeles World Cup 2026 host-city supporter and exclusive air-taxi partner of the Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission.
However, an event partnership or “official supporter” designation does not prove that scheduled public flights, consumer fares, route timetables or a booking system were available. It is also not the same as FAA certification or operational approval.
The company’s strongest formal air-taxi commitment was more directly connected to LA28. In May 2025, Archer announced that it had been selected as the official air-taxi provider of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Team USA. That announcement contemplated transportation for VIPs, fans and stakeholders, along with vertiport hubs near major venues. It remains a forward-looking partnership, not a guarantee of service volume or a particular launch date.

What “by 2026” actually meant
“As early as 2026” described Archer’s earliest hoped-for start, not a binding commitment to have every proposed route running by January—or by the World Cup.
An initial launch could also have meant something much narrower than a mature, on-demand network. Early operations might consist of a limited number of routes, demonstration flights, chartered trips, pilot-program flights or event-related service. A commercial network would require enough certified aircraft, trained pilots, vertiports, charging capacity, operating approvals and reliable dispatch capability.

Archer’s corporate announcements also contain forward-looking-risk warnings. Certification, commercialization, infrastructure, customer demand and partnerships may not develop as planned. For that reason, “Archer announced a plan” is accurate; “Archer launched an LA air-taxi network” is not supported by the cited evidence.
The aircraft: Archer Midnight
The aircraft behind the proposal is Midnight, a piloted electric VTOL aircraft. Archer says it is designed for one pilot and up to four passengers, with space for carry-on luggage. The company has described speeds of up to 150 mph and back-to-back flights of approximately 20 to 50 miles.
Archer also says Midnight uses multiple engines and propellers with redundant systems and is intended to produce less noise and fewer emissions than conventional helicopters. Those are company design claims and targets, not independently verified operating results or completed FAA performance findings.

A passenger would still need to reach the departure vertiport, park or arrange a ground transfer, check in, complete any applicable security procedures, board, and travel from the destination vertiport to the final address.
Certification was still the critical hurdle
Midnight needed FAA type certification before Archer could operate it as a certified passenger aircraft. Certification is separate from building a facility, signing a venue partnership or conducting a demonstration.
In its May 11, 2026 results release, Archer said it had closed Phase 3 of the FAA’s four-phase type-certification process. Phase 4—formal demonstration of compliance with airworthiness requirements through testing and analysis—was still underway.
That status represented substantial progress, but it was not completed FAA type certification. The same release said Archer expected initial U.S. operations during 2026. The publicly identified locations for those initial operations were tied to the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, or eIPP, in Florida, Texas and New York. Los Angeles was discussed separately as a planned market, with preparations focused particularly on the 2028 Olympics.

Why Hawthorne Airport matters
Hawthorne Airport could become the physical anchor for Archer’s Los Angeles operations. In December 2025, Archer completed the first phase of transactions giving it control of the airport’s master lease and associated subleases.
The company expected Hawthorne to serve as an operational hub, a base for future LA28-related activity and an aviation-technology and innovation center. The airport is less than three miles from LAX and is close to SoFi Stadium, The Forum, Intuit Dome and central Los Angeles.
That is meaningful infrastructure preparation, but control of an airport or fixed-base operator is not approval to carry commercial eVTOL passengers. Archer would still need aircraft certification, appropriate operating authorization, pilots, infrastructure approvals, charging systems and airspace procedures.
See the filing describing Archer’s Hawthorne Airport transactions.
Could air taxis have flown during World Cup match days?
Potentially, but only under the applicable FAA, airport and event-security rules. The FAA published World Cup airspace procedures covering match venues including SoFi Stadium. Pilots were directed to monitor Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) and temporary flight restriction (TFR) information, and airport access could be affected during high-demand periods.
These rules should not be confused with a blanket ban on all electric aircraft. The FAA’s “No Drone Zone” restrictions were directed at drones and other unmanned aircraft. A certified and authorized passenger aircraft would be governed by its own operating approvals, event procedures, traffic-management requirements and any TFR conditions.
For a vertiport near a stadium, additional questions would include venue security, local land-use approval, emergency access, air-traffic coordination, passenger screening and whether flights could continue during poor weather or security incidents.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a passenger trip would involve
- Travel to an approved vertiport or participating airport.
- Check in and complete the required passenger and security procedures.
- Board Midnight with a pilot and up to four passengers.
- Fly between participating locations, potentially in about 10 to 20 minutes.
- Complete the final ground journey from the destination vertiport.
The advertised flight time would not include the first and last ground legs, parking, check-in, security, boarding, charging and turnaround, air-traffic delays or weather disruptions. A trip that is dramatically faster in the air may not save much time if the vertiports are inconvenient or the passenger faces a long transfer at either end.

Pricing was also unresolved. The Los Angeles Times reported that early service could be priced more like a premium car service than an ordinary taxi or rideshare. That would make the aircraft attractive for time-sensitive travelers and event VIPs, but less likely to function as mass transportation for ordinary fans.
The Los Angeles Times reported on the proposed network’s infrastructure and pricing challenges.
What still had to go right
Whether Archer could turn the proposal into dependable Los Angeles service depended on several separate pieces:
- Completing FAA type certification and obtaining the operational approvals required for passenger flights.
- Qualifying pilots and producing enough aircraft for meaningful service.
- Approving and building vertiports, charging equipment and ground-support facilities.
- Coordinating with airports, venues, local and state agencies, law enforcement and event organizers.
- Integrating flights safely into dense Southern California airspace.
- Managing noise, emergency response, weather and community acceptance.
- Offering fares and schedules that generate sufficient demand.
Several practical failure points could delay or limit the plan: a vertiport might not receive approval, certification could take longer, aircraft production might not meet event demand, or temporary airspace restrictions could reduce service during matches. Marine-layer conditions, strong winds, wildfire smoke and other weather can also affect aircraft dispatch, even when ground transportation continues.
How to tell a real passenger service from a promotion
Before treating an Archer Los Angeles announcement as proof that flights are available, look for all of the following:
- A specific FAA authorization or certification status appropriate to the operation.
- A named route and operating airport or vertiport.
- An opening date and operating schedule.
- Published fares and a genuine booking channel.
- Passenger eligibility, luggage and security rules.
- Weather, cancellation and refund policies.
“Official provider,” “official partner,” a venue agreement or a demonstration flight does not by itself establish regular public passenger service.
The bottom line
Archer’s Los Angeles air-taxi project was a genuine announced plan, not a fictional concept. The company proposed a network linking LAX, USC, nearby airports and entertainment destinations, supported by infrastructure work at Hawthorne Airport and partnerships connected to major sporting events.

It described continuing FAA certification work, expected initial U.S. pilot operations in Florida, Texas and New York, and ongoing preparation for Los Angeles and the 2028 Games. The World Cup connection was therefore part of Archer’s rollout narrative and event strategy—not proof that fans could book routine air-taxi rides to SoFi Stadium.
