It does not, by itself, let an attacker start the engine or steer the car. The affected system was installed by dealers on some vehicles, so the make or model alone cannot tell you whether your car has it.
What the KARR vulnerability lets an attacker do
UC San Diego researchers found that the KARR Security app contained a shared Bluetooth authentication key. Using that finding, they built an app that could send commands accepted by nearby KARR devices. The problem is in the aftermarket alarm system—not a general flaw in the vehicle brands on which dealers installed it.

For a vulnerable device within Bluetooth range, the demonstrated commands could unlock the car, disable the alarm, honk the horn, flash the lights or disable the ignition. Disabling ignition could leave a driver stranded. The Bluetooth flaw does not itself start the engine or remotely control steering. WIRED’s account of the researchers’ findings describes a separate theft technique involving physical entry and a locksmith tool; that is distinct from what the Bluetooth vulnerability enables.

How many vehicles may have a KARR device?
The often-cited figure of more than 2 million is a researchers’ estimate of deployed Bluetooth-enabled KARR devices, reported by WIRED. The researchers used crowdsourced WiGLE signal data and serial-number extrapolation; it is not a confirmed count of cars that remain vulnerable or unpatched.

KPBS reported a separate estimate by UCSD researcher Nishant Bhaskar: more than 2.2 million cars sold in Southern California since 2017. That is a regional sales estimate, not an independently audited count of affected vehicles. Researchers also found KARR-equipped vehicles in the United States and other countries, so the issue is not confined to Southern California. A 20-minute scan near UC San Diego found 97 KARR-equipped vehicles, a local observation rather than a national prevalence rate. KPBS explains the regional estimate.
Does my car have a KARR alarm?
Some dealers installed KARR systems to protect cars on their lots, and the equipment could remain in a vehicle after sale—even if a buyer did not request or activate the add-on. You may not have been told it was there.

- Look for a KARR or SWDS sticker on a vehicle window.
- Check beneath the dashboard for a small button with a blinking light, another identification cue described by WIRED.
A sticker or button can help identify the system, but it does not establish whether the device is running vulnerable firmware. If you are unsure, contact the company or a dealer for help identifying the installed system and checking its update status.

KPBS reported that Acrisure Protection Group released a firmware patch on July 20, 2026. WIRED reported the following process for owners: the KARR Security app may alert users to the update; if you do not have the app, download it and connect it to the KARR alarm, then select “customer service” and “firmware update.”

- Open or install the KARR Security app and connect it to the vehicle’s KARR alarm.
- Select “customer service.”
- Select “firmware update” and follow the app’s instructions.
Those are the steps reported in July 2026; check the app or WIRED’s update guidance for current instructions, since vendor procedures can change. If you cannot connect or complete the update, ask Acrisure Protection Group or a dealer for assistance. The cited reports do not establish that owners must remove or replace the alarm.

Acrisure Protection Group called the vulnerability “highly complex” and said it presented a “low risk to customers under real-world conditions,” while stating that it developed a firmware update. That is the company’s characterization, not an independent risk assessment. WIRED reported that UCSD researchers privately notified the company in January 2025 and that the patch arrived close to 18 months later, shortly before planned conference presentations. WIRED also reported that the company planned communications through its app, website and dealers but had not explained how it would reach owners unaware that a KARR device had been installed.

- 【2-Pack Double Protection】: Each set includes 2 car alarm units + 1 wireless remote, so you can secure two vehicles at once, or place one on the front and one on the rear of a single car. The remote can pair with multiple hosts - great for couples, families, or a car + motorcycle combo
- 【Smart 3D Motion Sensor, Fewer False Alarms】: Built-in 3D acceleration sensor with AI algorithm detects vibration, prying and forced entry, while intelligently filtering out noise from passing cars, rain or thunder - high sensitivity without the constant false alarms that cheap alarms cause
- 【108dB Siren + Red Warning Light】: First vibration triggers a short beep with red flashing as a warning; a second sets off a 30-second loud 108dB siren with strobe-like flashing that scares off thieves. 3 volume levels (108/102/96dB) suit neighborhoods, lots or busy streets
- 【Magnetic Mount, No Drilling】: A strong magnet holds the alarm in place - no tools, no wiring, no sticky residue, and you can move it between cars anytime. The anti-UV PC housing resists high heat and cold, so it stays stable even in a car parked under the summer sun
- 【66ft Wireless Remote & Long Battery】: Arm, disarm or locate your vehicle from up to 66ft (20m) away. Powered by 2 AAA batteries, the unit runs 6+ months and the remote lasts up to 2 years. Also works for home doors, bikes, ebikes, luggage - multi-scene security
The practical takeaway is to identify whether your vehicle has a KARR/SWDS unit and, if so, check its firmware through current vendor guidance. The reported commands require Bluetooth proximity; the estimates describe possible scale, not a verified tally of vehicles still exposed.
