For the closest, best-documented High Peaks scenery, take NY Route 73 on the 30-mile High Peaks Scenic Byway between Adirondack Northway Exit 30 and Lake Placid. The route passes mountain scenery, Chapel Pond, Johns Brook, Roaring Brook Falls and the Cascade Lakes, according to the New York State Department of Transportation. For a longer regional journey, consider a section of the Olympic Trail—but don’t expect uninterrupted mountain views along its full span.

Here are four distinct ways to plan a mountain-focused Adirondacks drive, with the route type and limits of each made clear. The available official route descriptions support these options, not ten independently verified itineraries.

Which Adirondacks drive is best for mountain views?

The High Peaks Scenic Byway on NY Route 73 is the strongest choice if mountain scenery is the priority. NYSDOT describes the 30-mile route from Adirondack Northway Exit 30 to Lake Placid as winding past the Adirondacks’ highest peaks and picturesque waters, including Chapel Pond, Johns Brook, Roaring Brook Falls and the Cascade Lakes. Those named features make it a more specific mountain-view recommendation than a region-wide route whose scenery varies by section.

The setting is substantial: the Federal Highway Administration says the High Peaks Region contains more than 40 peaks above 4,000 feet. NYSDOT also reports more than four million travelers annually on the High Peaks Byway; the agency’s page does not state a year, and that figure is not identified as a count of scenic-drive visitors alone.

Four scenic Adirondacks drives and route ideas

1. High Peaks Scenic Byway: NY Route 73 from Exit 30 to Lake Placid

Best for: A focused drive through the High Peaks with named water and mountain features along the corridor.

Route type and length: A named, 30-mile scenic byway connecting Adirondack Northway Exit 30 with Lake Placid. NYSDOT names Chapel Pond, Johns Brook, Roaring Brook Falls and the Cascade Lakes in its route description. The agency’s description does not establish that every feature is visible from the road or that each has a roadside stop, so check access before planning a stop or hike.

How to plan it: Treat Lake Placid and Exit 30 as the endpoints of a corridor, rather than assuming this is a loop. Allow time for the drive and any stops you independently confirm; a reliable drive-time estimate is not established here.

2. Olympic Trail: choose a manageable section

Best for: A longer regional road trip that includes Lake Placid, rather than a drive devoted exclusively to mountain views.

NYSDOT describes the Olympic Trail as stretching from Lake Ontario to Lake Champlain and identifies Lake Placid as a highlight. Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1932 and 1980. This is a regional route, not evidence of continuous mountain scenery across its full length. Choose a section based on your starting point and available time instead of treating the entire trail as one mountain-view drive. The state’s Olympic Trail description provides the route’s regional context.

3. Lake Placid–Wilmington on Route 86

Best for: Pairing a Lake Placid-area drive with a named natural attraction.

Lake George, Great Sacandaga: Adirondack Park Map (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map, 743)
  • National Geographic Lake George/Sacandaga Lk #743 by New York - TI00000743

Visit Adirondacks highlights High Falls Gorge along Route 86 between Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain. This makes the corridor a practical candidate for a shorter outing, but confirm the attraction’s current access and operating information before setting a date. The tourism source establishes the general corridor and attraction, not a complete itinerary, exact stop access or a drive-time estimate.

4. Lake Placid and the Whiteface area

Best for: Combining mountain-country driving with Olympic-area attractions.

The regional tourism site calls out the Olympic ski jumps above Lake Placid and Whiteface-area attractions. Use Lake Placid as a base for planning a local outing, then verify the roads and visitor access for the specific attraction you choose. The available route information does not establish current summit-road access, seasonal opening dates or a complete Whiteface-area loop.

How to choose and prepare

  • For the clearest supported mountain-focused choice: Choose NY Route 73’s High Peaks Scenic Byway and plan around its named corridor features.
  • For a broad regional journey: Select a section of the Olympic Trail that suits your endpoints; its full Lake Ontario–Lake Champlain span should not be treated as a continuous mountain-view route.
  • For a local attraction stop: Consider Route 86 between Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain, with High Falls Gorge as a named attraction to check.
  • Before departure: Confirm current road conditions, closures, seasonal access and attraction operations with the responsible road or attraction administrator. The route descriptions cited here do not establish live conditions or 2026 opening dates.
  • For regional planning: Visit Adirondacks offers an Adirondack Scenic Byways Roadmap. Its travel guide covers 14 New York State Scenic Byways; that scope does not mean all 14 lie wholly within the Adirondacks.

See the regional Visit Adirondacks scenic drives and byways guide for its highlighted drives and attractions.
