Mahindra has published India-market powertrains, variants, equipment and dated introductory prices. The JSW Motors India page for the T2 lists an appealing specification, but explicitly says that India pricing, final specifications and variant availability were not confirmed at the time of its update. That makes the T2 a wait-and-see proposition rather than an equally confirmed showroom alternative.
This is a specification-based buying guide, not a back-to-back road-test verdict. No independent source establishes which SUV rides better, is easier to park, uses less fuel, lasts longer or costs less to own. Those decisions require testing the relevant trims in your normal traffic, parking spaces and family configuration.

Verdict: buy the Thar ROXX now, or wait for confirmed T2 details
The Thar ROXX is the practical recommendation when you need a known India-market vehicle, want a choice of petrol or diesel and manual or automatic transmissions, and prefer equipment and variant information published by the manufacturer. It is a five-seat SUV with a 2,850 mm wheelbase, a claimed 644-litre boot and a broad comfort and safety specification.
The T2 could become a strong alternative if its India-listed configuration reaches showrooms unchanged. Its provisional specification includes a 2,800 mm wheelbase, 220 mm minimum ground clearance, automatic dual-zone climate control, rear air vents, an electric tailgate and, on higher trims, features such as a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control and 360-degree imaging. It is also wider than the ROXX on the figures available. But its India price, booking status, final equipment and variant availability remain unresolved in the cited JSW Motors India information.

Therefore, the decision is not a conventional value comparison yet:
- Need an SUV now: shortlist the Thar ROXX, then confirm the current local trim, waiting period, on-road price and test-drive suitability.
- Like the T2’s cabin size or equipment: wait for a formal India launch, confirmed prices, dealer support and final specifications before paying a booking amount.
- Choosing for daily comfort: drive both vehicles back to back with your usual passengers. Published suspension descriptions cannot prove ride quality or city usability.
Price and availability: the biggest difference today
Mahindra Thar ROXX prices are dated launch announcements
Mahindra’s August 15, 2024 launch release announced an introductory Thar ROXX range starting at ₹12.99 lakh ex-showroom. A September 25, 2024 announcement for 4×4 variants started at ₹18.79 lakh ex-showroom. In January 2026, Mahindra announced the rear-wheel-drive STAR EDN with an introductory price starting at ₹16.85 lakh ex-showroom.
These are announcement prices tied to specific dates and versions, not a verified October 2026 dealer price list. Ex-showroom figures also exclude registration, insurance, taxes, accessories, financing and other on-road charges. Check Mahindra’s current official price list and obtain a written quotation from a local dealer before comparing budgets. A current price, discount or waiting-period claim cannot be inferred from those launch figures.
The T2 has no confirmed India price in the supplied specification
The JSW Motors India T2 page provides engine and trim information but states that “Pricing, variant availability and final India specification were not confirmed at the time of writing.” Consequently, any third-party expected price should be treated as speculation, not as a quotation. Without a confirmed price, it is impossible to calculate a defensible purchase-value or monthly-payment winner.
For a fair comparison, wait until the T2 has a published India price list and compare equivalent equipment: automatic transmission, drive system, safety aids, sunroof, camera systems, warranty and service inclusions. Comparing a confirmed ROXX price with an estimated T2 price can make either SUV appear artificially attractive.
Powertrains and everyday performance
Thar ROXX: two engines and two transmission types
Mahindra’s 2024 launch release lists a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel, each available with a six-speed manual or an Aisin automatic transmission in the announced range. The manufacturer reports 130 kW and 380 Nm for the petrol and 128.6 kW and 370 Nm for the diesel.

The diesel’s torque characteristics may suit drivers who regularly carry passengers or travel on rough roads, while the petrol offers a different refinement and response profile. However, the supplied material contains no controlled fuel-economy test, acceleration comparison, noise measurement or long-term reliability data. Do not choose an engine solely from the power and torque numbers; include your annual mileage, traffic conditions, transmission preference and access to service support.

The JSW Motors India table lists a 1.5TD configuration with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and two 2.0TD configurations, also with seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions. Listed outputs are 135 kW and 290 Nm for the 1.5TD and 187 kW and 390 Nm for the 2.0TD versions.
Those figures are listed specifications, not confirmation that every engine, transmission calibration or equipment package will be sold in India. The page’s final-specification caveat applies. A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox may feel different from the ROXX’s six-speed manual or Aisin automatic in stop-start traffic, but no independent test in the available material establishes clutch smoothness, low-speed response or durability.

Power output is not a substitute for a road test. For everyday use, throttle calibration, visibility, steering effort, ride isolation, braking feel and automatic-transmission behaviour can matter more than the highest published kilowatt figure.
Dimensions, cabin and family practicality
ROXX interior and luggage claims
Mahindra describes the ROXX as a five-seat SUV on its M_GLYDE platform. Its launch material lists a flat second-row floor and a claimed 644-litre boot. A flatter rear floor can make it easier for a middle passenger to place their feet, but actual shoulder room, child-seat access and luggage loading should be checked with your family’s own seats and bags.

Selected versions are described with a panoramic roof and ventilated front seats. Twin 26.03 cm screens and wireless phone connectivity are also listed. Because these features are trim-dependent, confirm the exact variant rather than assuming they are standard across the range.

T2 footprint and equipment
The JSW Motors India page lists the T2 at 4,785 mm long with the spare-tire cover and 4,612 mm without it, 2,006 mm wide, with a 2,800 mm wheelbase and 220 mm minimum ground clearance. The global JETOUR page gives the same 4,785 × 2,006 × 1,880 mm dimensions and 2,800 mm wheelbase, corroborating the global footprint but not a finalized India-market vehicle.
The listed T2 equipment includes automatic dual-zone air conditioning, rear air outlets, five seats and an electric tailgate across the listed configurations. Higher trims add items such as a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control and 360-degree imaging. The same page warns that India availability and final specification were not confirmed, so treat each item as provisional.
At 2,006 mm wide, the T2 is a substantial vehicle for Indian apartment ramps, older parking garages and narrow lanes. The ROXX’s exact width is not stated in the cited material, so a dimensional winner cannot be declared. Measure your parking space and test mirror clearance rather than relying on brochure impressions.
Practical checks before you decide
- Take the vehicle to your home parking space, including the ramp, gate and turning area.
- Seat every regular passenger in the second row and check knee room, headroom, door opening and visibility.
- Install your actual child seat using the ISOFIX points and test access around it.
- Load your routine luggage, stroller or work equipment into the boot; do not rely on the stated litre figure alone.
- Use the cameras and mirrors in a tight parking manoeuvre, checking whether the screen view remains clear at night and in rain.
- Ask the dealer to demonstrate the exact trim’s roof, seat ventilation, tailgate, driver-assistance and connectivity functions.
Comfort and commuting
What Mahindra claims for the ROXX
Mahindra says the ROXX uses WATT’s Link, advanced shock absorbers with MTV-CL and frequency-dependent damping technology, plus a Hydraulic Rebound Stopper. The company presents these as part of a refined body-on-frame SUV design. Those are engineering descriptions, not measured proof that it rides better than the T2 over broken urban roads.
For a daily route, pay attention to low-speed bumps, expansion joints, speed breakers, steering weight during parking, seat support, air-conditioning performance while stationary and the ease of entering the second row. Test the same route in both vehicles, preferably with the passengers who will use them most.
What the T2 listing suggests
The T2 table lists independent MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension, automatic dual-zone climate control and rear air outlets. These features may appeal to a family commuter, especially in hot weather, but the page’s India-market caveat means the final equipment can change. Suspension layout alone cannot predict comfort: spring tuning, damping, tire sidewalls, seat design and body control are equally important.

Visibility, maneuverability and daily stress
No source reviewed provides a comparative turning circle, steering ratio, seat height, blind-zone measurement or independent parking assessment. Ask for a test drive that includes a crowded market, a multi-storey car park, a rough residential road and a highway merge. A vehicle that feels manageable in a showroom may be tiring when repeatedly positioned in a narrow space.

Safety equipment and what is not proven
Thar ROXX safety specification
Mahindra lists six airbags, three-point belts and seatbelt reminders for all seats, ISOFIX child-seat mounts and Level 2 ADAS on specified versions. The launch release says the SUV was “Engineered to achieve the highest B-NCAP safety rating.” That wording is an engineering claim; it is not evidence in the cited release of a completed crash-test score. Do not describe the ROXX as having a published B-NCAP rating unless an official test result is separately available.
T2 listed safety aids
The JSW Motors India table lists front airbags, front-side airbags, ISOFIX, tyre-pressure monitoring and electronic stability control. Its top listed trim adds blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. The table is trim-dependent and subject to the page’s warning that final India specifications and availability were not confirmed.
Feature count is not crash-test performance. Ask for the exact Indian homologation and safety-test information for the vehicle you can actually buy. During the drive, verify that driver-assistance systems can be adjusted or disabled in the way your household prefers and that alerts are understandable rather than distracting.

ROXX hardware and announced 4×4 pricing
Mahindra’s September 2024 4×4 announcement describes a low-ratio transfer case, electronic locking differential, snow, sand and mud modes, CrawlSmart and IntelliTurn. It claims 650 mm water-wading depth. The announced 4×4 variants were diesel-only and started at ₹18.79 lakh ex-showroom at that time.
Confirm the current model-year variant, tire specification, underbody protection and wading guidance before using those figures for a purchase decision. Water depth is not a guarantee of safe crossing: speed, current, entry angle, recovery equipment and local conditions matter.

T2 listed off-road systems
The JSW Motors India table lists automatic real-time 4WD and a rear electronic limited-slip differential for the 2.0TD configurations, along with off-road modes and crawl control. That is a different description from the ROXX’s low-range transfer-case language. Because the T2 India specification is provisional, confirm whether low range, gearing, locking functions, tire choices and protection plates are fitted to the exact production trim.
For serious trail driving, compare confirmed hardware rather than exterior styling. Check approach and departure angles, clearance under load, tire sidewalls, recovery points, spare-wheel access and the availability of roadside or dealer assistance in the areas you visit.
Which is more practical for family use?
The ROXX has the stronger case today because its five-seat layout, boot claim, powertrain choices and selected comfort and safety features are documented for India. The T2’s listed rear air vents, electric tailgate, possible 360-degree imaging and driver-assistance suite could be valuable for a family, but those benefits cannot be treated as guaranteed until JSW confirms the production variants.
Family practicality also depends on the details not established in the available specifications: ease of fitting three child seats, rear-door opening, third-row absence, luggage shape, charging ports, interior storage, air-conditioning pull-down time and service coverage. Put your own family through a complete loading and parking trial before signing.
Should you wait for the Jetour T2 in India?
Waiting makes sense when its unresolved details are decisive
- You specifically want the listed 2.0TD output, real-time 4WD concept or multi-link rear suspension.
- The T2’s listed width, tailgate or higher-trim technology fits your needs better than the confirmed ROXX equipment.
- You can postpone purchase until JSW publishes an India launch date, booking process, price list, warranty and final variant equipment.
Buy the ROXX instead when certainty matters
- You need a vehicle within your current buying window.
- You want both manual and automatic transmission choices or a petrol alternative.
- You require a published India-market variant structure and a dealer quotation rather than an estimate.
- You plan to use the SUV for family travel and want to test a vehicle that is already specified for the market.
Do not place a refundable or non-refundable booking based only on an expected T2 price or an overseas specification. Request written confirmation of the engine, gearbox, drive system, safety equipment, warranty, service intervals and delivery date.
A disciplined test-drive and purchase checklist
- Choose equivalent trims. Match transmission, drive system, tire size, roof, camera and assistance equipment before comparing impressions.
- Drive cold and warm. Observe starting behaviour, air-conditioning performance, gearbox response and brake feel in the first ten minutes and after the vehicle reaches operating temperature.
- Use real roads. Include speed breakers, patched asphalt, potholes, a tight parking area, an open road and stop-start traffic.
- Bring the household. Have the usual front and rear passengers assess ingress, seat comfort, visibility and noise without a salesperson answering for them.
- Check technology. Pair your phone, test wireless connectivity, inspect camera clarity, adjust driver-assistance settings and verify that the exact trim has the advertised screens.
- Inspect the paperwork. Match the vehicle identification and equipment list to the quotation. Confirm ex-showroom and on-road totals, insurance, registration, accessories, warranty and delivery commitments.
- Verify support. Ask where scheduled service, body repairs, software updates and roadside assistance will be handled in your city and on routes you use.
Bottom line for an India buyer in 2026
The Mahindra Thar ROXX is the better-supported everyday choice at present, not because a published specification proves it rides, parks or lasts longer, but because its India-market product information is substantially more settled. The JSW Motors India T2 listing is promising on paper, yet its own qualification prevents a firm purchase comparison: price, final specification and availability were not confirmed in that information.
Choose the ROXX after testing the exact trim in your normal conditions and checking current local pricing. Choose to wait for the T2 only if you are comfortable postponing the decision until JSW confirms what India customers can order, at what price and with which equipment. In either case, treat the figures above as manufacturer or listed specifications—not independent comparative test results.
