This is not a normal comparison between two fully launched vehicles. Mahindra introduced the Thar ROXX in 2024 and published specifications, safety equipment and launch pricing. JSW Motors’ Combat remains a forthcoming model in the available reporting. Autocar India reported the name and likely powertrain on September 12, 2026, then reported a planned December 4, 2026 debut on October 9, 2026. Until JSW publishes India-specific details, any Combat specification is an expectation rather than a purchase-ready fact.

Torque depends on the exact engine and drivetrain configuration, so a buyer should not treat one number as a universal Thar ROXX output. The launch specification gives 380 Nm for the listed petrol configuration and 370 Nm for the listed diesel configuration. Mahindra’s separate 4×4 price announcement describes the 4×4 diesel manual at 330 Nm and the 4×4 diesel automatic at 370 Nm.

That variation matters when you compare quotations. Ask the salesperson to write down the engine, transmission, drive layout and model year on the offer; “diesel Thar ROXX” is not specific enough to establish the torque figure or equipment.
4×4 hardware and claimed water ability
Rear-wheel-drive versions and 4×4 versions serve different buyers. Applicable 4×4 variants use Mahindra’s 4Xplor terrain modes and electronic locking differentials. Mahindra claims 650 mm of water-wading depth. That is a manufacturer capability claim, not an independently tested result, and it does not make every Thar ROXX variant equally suitable for deep water or difficult trails. A 4×4 buyer should confirm that the quoted trim includes the terrain modes and locking hardware rather than assuming they are standard across the range.
Safety and visibility equipment
Mahindra’s launch material lists six airbags, Level 2 advanced driver assistance, a 360-degree surround-view system with blind-view monitor, tyre-pressure monitoring, and stability and traction systems. Verify the final equipment list for the exact trim and production year because launch-range features can be distributed differently between variants. During a test drive, check camera clarity in daylight and darkness, the position of blind-view images, and whether the driver-assistance alerts are easy to understand on your normal roads.

JSW Combat: what is reported, and what is still unknown
Launch timing and identity
Autocar India reported on September 12, 2026 that JSW Motors plans to call its Jetour T2-based SUV Combat. A report dated October 9, 2026 says the planned debut is December 4, 2026. Those reports describe a plan, not a completed launch. They do not establish when bookings open, when customer deliveries begin, which cities receive cars first, or whether the name and date will change.
Reported plug-in-hybrid specification
The September report says the India vehicle is likely to use a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, two electric motors and an 18.4 kWh battery, drawing on the international T2. It cites the international T2’s 360 hp, 610 Nm and claimed 90 km NEDC electric range. None of those figures should be used as the Combat’s confirmed Indian output or range. India calibration, homologation, software, cooling, kerb weight, charging hardware and equipment can all alter the result.
For a plug-in hybrid, the practical question is not only the headline electric range. You need a reliable place to charge, a tariff that makes regular charging worthwhile, and a routine that allows the battery to be replenished. Wait for the official Indian battery capacity, charging time, connector, warranty and operating modes before calculating fuel savings.

Expected equipment
The October report describes equipment expected from the international model: a large infotainment screen and driver display, powered and ventilated seats, a 12-speaker audio system, six airbags, a 540-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS. These are reference-model expectations, not a confirmed Indian trim list. JSW could standardise, delete or reserve them for a higher variant. Treat a showroom display or official India brochure as the point at which each item becomes established.

When the Thar ROXX’s petrol or diesel is simpler
The Thar ROXX gives you a conventional engine choice that can be refuelled through the existing petrol or diesel network. That is useful for high-mileage intercity driving, owners without a parking-space charger and buyers who need predictable refuelling stops. Diesel may suit sustained highway use, while petrol can make sense for lower annual mileage or drivers who prefer a quieter powertrain. Your exact choice still depends on local fuel prices, traffic, service support and the quoted variant.
When the Combat’s plug-in system could make sense
A plug-in hybrid can reduce engine use on short trips when it is charged regularly, while retaining an engine for longer journeys. That potential advantage is conditional: without frequent charging, the vehicle may carry battery weight without delivering the expected electric-running benefit. Do not compare the reported NEDC range directly with a real-world commute or with a certified Indian figure that has not yet been published.

Questions to ask before committing
- How many kilometres do you drive on weekdays, and can most of them be completed after an overnight charge?
- Do you have a dedicated parking socket and permission to install the required equipment?
- Will your annual long-distance trips require charging stops that are not yet available on your routes?
- What battery, hybrid-system and vehicle warranties will be offered in India?
- Is the quoted Combat price for the same tax, registration and equipment basis as the Thar ROXX quote?
Traction and off-road use
What the Thar ROXX offers
The Thar ROXX comparison must begin with drive layout. Mahindra sells both rear-wheel-drive and 4×4 versions, and the 4×4 hardware is tied to particular variants. If you need traction on loose surfaces, steep tracks or repeated monsoon crossings, identify the exact 4×4 trim, its tyre specification, approach and departure clearances, recovery points and underbody protection during the dealer visit. The published 650 mm water-wading claim applies as a manufacturer claim and should be treated with the same caution as any rated capability: speed, current, entry angle and vehicle condition still affect safety.
What is not yet known about Combat
The reports reviewed do not verify the Combat’s Indian drivetrain layout, low-range gearing, differential locks, terrain modes, ground clearance, water-wading rating or underbody protection. A rugged-looking body or an international T2 specification cannot substitute for those details. If off-road use is central to your decision, wait for an India brochure and inspect the production vehicle rather than placing a deposit on expected hardware.

Mahindra’s launch material describes a flat second-row floor, which can make three-abreast seating and loading easier than a raised centre tunnel. Sit in every seating position with the adults or child seats who will actually use the vehicle. Check rear-door opening, knee room, headroom, access to the belt buckles, ISOFIX or other child-seat provisions listed for the exact trim, and the boot with the second row occupied. Do not infer luggage capacity from exterior size.

Use the 360-degree view and blind-view monitor while parking in the dealer compound. Confirm whether the display, sensors and driver-assistance warnings remain usable with your preferred seating position and whether the system can be adjusted for frequent urban traffic.
Validate every Combat feature against the India trim
Ventilated powered seats, a large screen and a 12-speaker system could make the Combat attractive as a family cruiser, but the reports do not say which Indian variant receives them. Ask for a written equipment sheet and a demonstration of the rear seat, boot, camera views and child-seat fit. A 540-degree camera description in a report is not evidence that every trim sold in India will have that system.
Price, ownership and availability
Why the published numbers cannot be compared as bargains
Mahindra introduced the Thar ROXX from ₹12.99 lakh in a historical launch announcement and separately announced introductory prices for 4×4 variants. Those announcements are not a current price list. Registration, insurance, taxes, accessories, financing and dealer charges vary by city and date. Obtain an itemised on-road quotation for the exact engine, transmission, drive layout and trim.

The reported ₹30–50 lakh ex-showroom range for Combat is an estimate. It is not a JSW price announcement and cannot establish value against a Thar ROXX quotation. The two figures also may describe different equipment and tax assumptions. Wait for the official ex-showroom prices, variant names and delivery terms before judging affordability.
Ownership checks that matter more than a headline price
- Confirm local inventory, expected delivery date and whether the quoted Thar ROXX is a current production vehicle.
- Request scheduled-service intervals, labour rates, consumables, roadside assistance and warranty coverage in writing.
- For the Combat, ask who will service the high-voltage system, where parts are stocked and how battery and hybrid components are warranted.
- Compare insurance premiums and registration costs for the exact city rather than using an online ex-showroom estimate.
- Ask whether the offer includes accessories, extended warranty or maintenance packages that make two quotes appear different.
Which SUV fits each buyer?
Buy the Thar ROXX now if
- You need a vehicle before the Combat’s reported debut and cannot accept an unconfirmed delivery date.
- You want to test the actual seating, cameras, driver assistance and ride quality before paying.
- You require a confirmed 4×4 configuration and can verify the relevant hardware on the quotation and vehicle.
- Your routine does not support regular plug-in charging or you prefer conventional petrol or diesel refuelling.
Wait for the Combat if
- You are specifically seeking a plug-in-hybrid SUV and can keep your current vehicle until India specifications are official.
- You want to compare its final electric range, charging system, warranty and service network rather than rely on international T2 figures.
- Premium cabin equipment and advanced camera or driver-assistance features matter, but only if they are included in the variant you can afford.
- You are comfortable making a decision after the December 4 plan becomes a confirmed launch with prices and booking terms.
Do not decide on these assumptions
- Do not treat the T2’s 360 hp, 610 Nm or 90 km NEDC claim as Combat performance.
- Do not assume a reported 540-degree camera, ventilated seats or Level 2 ADAS will be standard in India.
- Do not use the Thar ROXX’s ₹12.99 lakh historical starting price as today’s on-road cost.
- Do not compare an estimated Combat ex-showroom range with a discounted or differently equipped Thar ROXX quote.
A practical buying process
- Define the non-negotiables. Write down seating, annual kilometres, charging access, 4×4 requirement, automatic/manual preference and maximum on-road budget.
- Get a precise Thar ROXX quote. Include variant, engine, gearbox, drive layout, manufacturing year, insurance, registration and every fee.
- Drive the Mahindra on your real routes. Test low-speed ride, highway stability, parking visibility, rear-seat access and the assistance systems you will use.
- Record the Combat’s confirmed launch data. When JSW publishes the India brochure, capture battery size, certified range, charging time, output, dimensions, warranty, variants, prices and delivery schedule.
- Compare like for like. Put both vehicles on the same ex-showroom and on-road basis, then add expected fuel or electricity cost, service and insurance.
- Inspect the final car before payment. Confirm the VIN or production details, included equipment, spare wheel or repair kit, charging accessories if applicable, and the written warranty.
Bottom line for a 2026 decision
The Mahindra Thar ROXX is the defensible choice for an immediate purchase because it is launched, specified and available for a physical evaluation. Choose the exact RWD or 4×4 variant around your terrain needs, then negotiate from a current city-specific on-road quotation rather than the historical launch price.
The JSW Combat is the more interesting wait-and-see option for a buyer who wants a plug-in hybrid and is prepared to postpone the decision. Its reported powertrain, international performance figures, premium equipment and ₹30–50 lakh estimate remain unconfirmed for India. The sensible comparison point arrives only after the planned December 4 debut produces official variants, prices, technical data, bookings and delivery commitments.
