That defense puts the electric Ferrari’s physical controls and mixed analogue-digital displays at the center of a broader argument: whether its minimalist, saloon-like design advances Ferrari or strays too far from the brand’s familiar look. The title’s US$615,000 figure is not a settled global price; launch-period reports gave different prices for different markets.
What Ive says the Luce’s design is meant to do
Ferrari worked with LoveFrom, the design collective co-founded by Ive and Marc Newson, on the Luce. Ferrari’s own design leadership was involved as well. In a Top Gear interview published April 1, 2026, Ive described an interface intended to combine the qualities of analogue displays with digital information and tactile, physical controls.
His objection is not that a car should have no digital technology. It is that a large, screen-led interface is a poor fit for the experience he wants drivers to have. “Practically and functionally, a large touchscreen doesn’t work in a car. That’s incontrovertible. I find it easy and lazy,” Ive told Top Gear. He also said: “Getting into a car and seeing one big display, well, it sucks the life out of me.” Those are Ive’s design judgments, not independently established safety findings.
Why critics have questioned its Ferrari character
The Luce’s minimalist, saloon-like form looks different from the low, familiar shapes associated with Ferrari’s petrol sports cars. The Guardian reported criticism from observers and online commenters, as well as concern from former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo about the marque’s legacy. The disagreement is ultimately about visual continuity: whether a new kind of Ferrari should still look recognizably like the cars that built the brand.

WIRED spoke with Italian automotive professionals, including designer Maurizio Corbi, who criticized the distinction between product and automotive design. “It’s clear that this is a product designed not by a car designer but by a product designer,” he said. That is Corbi’s professional assessment, not an objective classification of the design.
How electric-car packaging changes the shape
The Luce is described as Ferrari’s first fully electric vehicle. The Guardian notes that an EV battery-and-motor skateboard layout can raise the upper body compared with some Ferrari models, while allowing more room for passengers in the rear. That packaging helps make a five-seat layout possible. The result can be judged both as a departure from Ferrari’s usual proportions and as a practical consequence of designing around an electric powertrain.

Associated Press reported four electric motors, one for each wheel. The Guardian reported a 122 kWh battery, a range of 329 miles (530 km), and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds. These are launch-period reported specifications, not independent test results; range in particular should not be read as a measured real-world result.
Is the Ferrari Luce really a US$615,000 car?
US$615,000 is the figure in the headline, not a universally confirmed price. Contemporary reports differ, and the quoted amounts refer to different currencies and markets:

| Reported figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|
| US$640,000 starting price | The Guardian’s May 26, 2026 report; not a globally applicable price. |
| €550,000 | The Guardian’s May 27, 2026 report. |
| €500,000 Italian sticker price | Associated Press’s May 2026 coverage, which said U.S. pricing had not been announced. |
Because the reports use different currencies, markets and dates, they do not establish one definitive worldwide price. Availability is also time-sensitive: the latest availability reporting in the consulted coverage, from May 2026, said the car was not yet on sale then. That does not establish its sales or delivery status in October 2026.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the disagreement comes down to
- Brand identity: Critics question whether the Luce’s restrained, saloon-like styling preserves enough of Ferrari’s familiar visual character.
- Passenger space: Electric packaging supports a roomier rear and a five-seat layout, priorities that differ from those of many traditional Ferrari sports cars.
- Driver interaction: Ive argues for tactile controls and a blend of analogue and digital displays rather than a single dominant touchscreen.
Whether that combination feels convincingly Ferrari is a matter of taste. The concrete distinction is that the Luce pairs an electric, four-motor platform and five-seat practicality with an interface Ive says should remain physical and engaging.
