How much did Surtees’s Ducati 851 sell for?
Broad Arrow’s official results list the 1990 Ducati 851 F90 Corsa, ex-John Surtees, as lot 202 with a “total selling price” of €81,250. Dueruote reported a pre-sale estimate of €60,000–€80,000, putting the result €1,250 above the top of that range. The sale was part of Broad Arrow’s auction associated with the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este; the pre-sale report gave 25 May 2025 as the auction date, and the results document is dated 27 May 2025. Did it set a Ducati 851 auction record?
It may have, but the sources do not confirm that conclusively on a comparable basis. In its pre-sale coverage, New Atlas cited $42,932 as the then-current auction record for a Ducati 851. Surtees’s bike later sold for €81,250. Those amounts use different currencies, and the available reports do not establish a consistent treatment of buyer’s premiums or a standardized conversion for the comparison. The result therefore may have surpassed the cited earlier record, but the figures alone do not verify a definitive record. New Atlas’s report gives the earlier dollar figure; Broad Arrow’s results state the later euro total selling price.
What made this 851 F90 Corsa notable?
Dueruote described the F90 Corsa as one of 20 motorcycles made for the 1990 Superbike World Championship. The model also has significance in Ducati’s history: Dueruote says the 851 introduced the company’s liquid-cooled, four-valve Desmoquattro twin. Its report credits the 1990 season with 16 podiums across 26 races. Those production and racing details are reported by Dueruote.

How did the rest of the Villa d’Este auction perform?
Broad Arrow’s results document lists 72 lots offered and 56 sold, for a 78% sell-through rate. It reports a final auction total of €31,172,625. These figures put the Ducati’s sale in the context of the event without changing the qualification around the model-record comparison. The official results document is dated 27 May 2025.
