One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor the walk-behind mower covered by John Deere’s OMGX22621_C7 operator manual, gasoline with up to 10% ethanol (E10) is acceptable. The manual also calls for regular unleaded fuel rated at 87 octane or higher and recommends using fresh fuel within about 30 days, or adding stabilizer. Those specifications are for the mower covered by that manual—not every John Deere engine—so check the operator manual for your exact machine.
What ethanol blend can you use in this John Deere mower?
The cited walk-behind mower manual permits gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol. That includes E10, but it does not establish that higher-ethanol blends such as E15 or E85 are suitable. The manual also warns against fuel or additives containing methanol, which can damage the engine. Check the pump label and your equipment manual before filling the tank.

The same manual specifies regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher. Octane rating and ethanol content are separate fuel characteristics: meeting the octane requirement does not mean a blend is approved for your mower.
Why the exact mower or engine manual matters
The E10 guidance above comes from one John Deere walk-behind mower manual. Deere’s 2022 mower FAQ also repeats E10 guidance, but that does not establish a single fuel specification for every model, engine family, or region. Find the manual for your machine and follow its fuel requirements; if you are unsure which manual applies, ask a Deere dealer.

How to keep fuel fresh between mowing sessions
Fuel age is a separate issue from ethanol percentage. For the mower covered by its manual, Deere advises buying fresh, clean fuel in an amount likely to be used within approximately 30 days, or adding fuel stabilizer. Store fuel in a tightly covered container in a cool place out of direct sunlight, and use a clean, approved container to help keep dirt and water out.
For seasonal storage, use a stabilizer only as its current label directs and only with fuel and equipment it supports. John Deere’s Canada product listing for Fuel Protect TY27534 says the product treats fresh gasoline in stored equipment for up to 12 months and gives a dose of 1 oz per 2 gallons. Those are manufacturer claims for that product, not an independent test or a general shelf-life guarantee. Check the current package label and your equipment manual.

- Fixes rough running and hard-to-start engines: Breaks down gum and varnish that cause rough running, hard starts, sputtering, and no-start issues in small engines, helping restore performance quickly
- Cleans carburetors and fuel system: Works through the fuel system to clean carburetors, fuel injectors, and internal components, functioning as a small engine carb cleaner without requiring disassembly
- Removes water and combats ethanol fuel effects: Helps eliminate water in the fuel system and combats the effects of ethanol-blended fuels, including E15, which can contribute to rough running, stalling, and starting issues
- Designed for lawn mowers and small engine equipment: Ideal for use in lawn mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, snow blowers, generators, and other 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines
- Easy-to-use fuel treatment: Add to fresh gas and run the engine to circulate through the system, treating up to 20 gallons and helping restore smooth operation in small engines affected by fuel-related issues
Deere’s fluids and conditioners guidance also describes treating fresh fuel and running the engine before storage. Follow the current product instructions and the storage procedure in your own machine’s manual; stabilizer does not make an otherwise unsuitable fuel blend acceptable or repair damage already caused.
