Joby Aviation and Virgin Atlantic have signed a definitive multi-year agreement to develop a UK electric air taxi service, but passengers cannot yet book a UK flight. Virgin Atlantic plans to offer the service through its website and app; Joby remains responsible for operating the aircraft, managing routes and securing UK regulatory approvals. Heathrow and Manchester are expected connection points, with Manchester–Leeds and Heathrow–Central London among the proposed early routes.
What the Joby–Virgin Atlantic agreement means
The companies first announced their partnership in 2025. On July 22, 2026, they announced a definitive multi-year agreement making Virgin Atlantic Joby’s exclusive airline partner for air taxi services in the UK. Under the plan, customers would be able to book a Joby connection through Virgin Atlantic’s website or mobile app alongside a long-haul flight. Virgin Atlantic is also expected to support customer acquisition and infrastructure integration at the London and Manchester hubs. Joby’s announcement of the agreement describes the arrangement.
The agreement does not make Virgin Atlantic the aircraft operator. Joby says it will operate the aircraft, manage routes and pursue the approvals needed from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The release describes the arrangement as complementing Joby’s existing partnership with Delta Air Lines; it also reports that Delta holds a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic.
Which UK routes are proposed?

- Heathrow–Central London: as little as 8 minutes by air taxi, according to Joby’s projection.
These are proposed routes and company-estimated flight times, not confirmed schedules or independently measured door-to-door journeys. The actual trip would also involve getting to and from the landing sites, any waiting or transfer time, and the service’s eventual operating arrangements.
The original 2025 announcement used Heathrow–Canary Wharf as an illustrative route, estimating an 8-minute flight and comparing it with an 80-minute car journey. That was a different example from the Heathrow–Central London route named in 2026. Neither announcement establishes that either trip is currently operating or available to book. Joby’s 2025 partnership announcement gives the earlier route example.

What aircraft would Joby use?
Joby describes its aircraft as an all-electric, vertical-takeoff-and-landing design with six tilting propellers, one pilot and room for up to four passengers. In its 2025 UK partnership announcement, the company said the aircraft could reach speeds of up to 200 mph and that it expected to deploy it on routes up to 100 miles. These are company-published specifications and plans, not verified performance figures for a UK passenger service.
A separate 2022 company announcement described a maximum range of 150 miles. That is a dated company claim, distinct from the 2025 expected route length; the two figures should not be treated as interchangeable measures of a confirmed UK operating range. Joby’s 2022 UK validation announcement contains the earlier range figure.

Is Joby’s air taxi approved to fly passengers in the UK?
The cited announcements do not establish completed UK certification or permission to begin passenger operations. Joby said in 2022 that it had formally applied for UK validation of its aircraft design through the CAA, based on its FAA type certification. In 2026, the company said certification was progressing under the bilateral safety agreement between the FAA and UK CAA, building on that application. Joby remains responsible for securing the approvals.
In an August 5, 2026 shareholder letter, Joby reported that five electric aircraft were flying, including its first FAA-conforming aircraft, and described progress in the final stage of the US type-certification program. That is company-reported US certification context; it does not demonstrate UK validation or authorization to carry UK passengers. Joby’s shareholder-letter archive lists the company’s investor materials.

When will UK flights start, and can you book one?
The announcements do not give a firm UK launch date, a confirmed scheduled route, a published UK fare or an open passenger-booking window. Virgin Atlantic’s planned website and app integration describes how booking could work in the future; it is not evidence that tickets are on sale now.
Joby’s 2025 announcement said launch pricing was expected to be comparable with existing premium ground ridesharing options, but it did not provide a confirmed UK fare. Until routes, approvals, schedules and fares are published, the proposed flight times cannot establish whether an air taxi would be quicker or better value for an individual airport trip.

A short flight estimate is not the same as a complete journey comparison. Once a service is operating and the details are published, compare:

- Door-to-door time, including travel to and from the landing sites and transfer or waiting time.
- The full fare and any conditions for connecting it with a Virgin Atlantic flight.
- Whether the departure and arrival sites are convenient for your actual trip.
- Passenger and luggage limits, accessibility arrangements and disruption policies.
- Whether the route is operating under the required approvals and has a confirmed schedule.
