What happened in the Jiji–Cars45 deal?
TechCabal reported on 28 June 2021 that Jiji had acquired Cars45. The companies said their operations would merge in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana. The amount paid was not disclosed.
Jiji was known for classified listings, while Cars45 offered a service for selling cars to dealers or through a consumer marketplace. The announcement described the combination as bringing online and offline capabilities together—not simply adding another category of listings.
Why did Jiji acquire Cars45?
Jiji said it was looking beyond classifieds toward adjacent businesses that could use its marketplace position to support transactions. Co-founder Vladimir Mnogoletniy described the strategic logic as acquiring “very close business models” that would give Jiji exposure to transactional marketplaces.

Jiji CEO and co-founder Anton Volyansky called the acquisition the company’s “first bold step into the transactional business model.” The stated ambition was therefore broader than expanding car listings: Jiji was seeking a foothold in services that could help facilitate activity around a sale.
What did Cars45 add to Jiji?
Cars45’s announced model combined online discovery with offline vehicle checks. Its inspection centres and vehicle condition reporting—including checks against databases—were presented as central parts of the service. The announcement said inspections covered more than 200 parameters, a company-reported detail attributed to Jiji CFO David Ojo.

Those descriptions explain the intended service design; they are not an independent guarantee that an inspection detects every problem or that a vehicle is safe or accurately described. A 2023 ThisDay report later referred to Cars45 by Jiji inspection and verification centres in Nigeria in connection with a Suzuki by CFAO partnership. That is a dated example of the combined brand and proposition, not evidence that the partnership continues today.

What is known about Cars45 after the acquisition?
Later sources show the Cars45 name remained in use, but do not resolve the company’s exact present-day status. In November 2024, the African Competition Forum’s landscape study listed Jiji among general classified platforms and referred to its acquisitions of OLX and Cars45. The study also noted that automotive classified markets vary across countries and that many platforms are local; it does not establish Cars45’s current market share.
A Cars45 Nigeria LinkedIn post said the brand was adopting the Cars45 name again. That indicates brand usage, but a social post does not establish the legal entity, ownership structure or current operations by country. The 2021 announcement’s three-country scope should not be treated as confirmation of today’s footprint.

The available sources do not establish the acquisition price, detailed terms, present standalone status, or a measurable post-acquisition performance outcome attributable to the deal.
