There is no universal winner between the Jetour T2 and Mahindra Thar ROXX. The right choice depends first on where you live, which variant is actually available, whether you need petrol or diesel, and whether your driving includes serious off-road work. The T2 information currently available is a global specification, not confirmation that the SUV is sold in India. Mahindra’s figures and feature descriptions come from 2024 launch material, so current prices and equipment must be checked with a local dealer.
On the published specifications, the T2 is the larger-bodied five-seat SUV and its 2.0-litre versions use real-time four-wheel drive. The Thar ROXX offers a documented petrol-and-diesel range, manual and automatic transmissions, and a detailed off-road system on applicable 4×4 variants. Those are different propositions rather than direct substitutes.

Consider the T2 only after confirming local sale status if its global specification suits your needs: a wider and longer body, five seats, and a 2.0-litre powertrain with real-time 4WD. The global page does not establish Indian pricing, warranty coverage, dealer support, or the equipment of any India-specific version.

Neither vehicle can be declared the safer, more reliable, cheaper-to-run, or better-riding choice from the cited manufacturer material. Those questions require independent evidence or a thorough local test drive.

The dimensions are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee of interior comfort. The T2’s two length figures differ because one includes the spare-wheel cover. The ROXX’s longer wheelbase does not, by itself, prove that its second row or luggage area is more usable.
Powertrains and transmissions
Jetour T2: two turbocharged choices on the global sheet
Jetour’s global specification lists a 1.5TD engine producing 135 kW and 290 N·m, and a 2.0TD producing 187 kW and 390 N·m. Both are shown with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 1.5TD configuration is front-wheel drive, while the listed 2.0TD configurations use real-time 4WD.

Therefore, do not assume that an Indian-market T2, if introduced, would retain these engines, outputs, gearbox, or drivetrain combinations.
Thar ROXX: petrol, diesel, manual and automatic options
Mahindra’s 2024 launch material lists a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel. The release describes six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, but the exact engine, gearbox and driven-wheel combinations depend on the variant.

The broad launch figures are 130 kW and 380 N·m for the petrol, and 128.6 kW and 370 N·m for the diesel. In a separate 4×4 price announcement, Mahindra lists the 4×4 manual at 111.9 kW and 330 N·m, while the 4×4 automatic is listed at 128.6 kW and 370 N·m. These numbers should not be merged into one generic ROXX output: ask the dealer for the specification of the exact variant on the quotation.
What the drivetrains mean in daily use
- A front-wheel-drive T2 is a road-oriented configuration even though the T2 nameplate also includes four-wheel-drive versions.
- The T2’s 2.0TD real-time 4WD is the relevant comparison with a ROXX 4×4, not the 1.5TD.
- A rear-wheel-drive ROXX is not equipped like a 4×4 ROXX. Confirm the axle configuration before paying for a vehicle advertised simply as a Thar ROXX.
- The T2’s dual-clutch gearbox and the ROXX’s manual or automatic choices create different driving preferences. A buyer who specifically wants a clutch pedal, or wants to avoid one, should filter variants before comparing equipment.
Size, seating and practical cabin questions
The T2 has the larger stated exterior footprint in length and width. Its listed length is 4,785 mm with the spare-wheel cover and 4,612 mm without it; width is 2,006 mm. The ROXX is 4,428 mm long and 1,870 mm wide. That difference may matter in a narrow parking garage, on a tight trail, or when judging mirror clearance in city traffic.

The ROXX has the longer stated wheelbase at 2,850 mm, compared with 2,800 mm for the T2. Wheelbase can influence axle clearance and cabin packaging, but it cannot establish actual legroom, seat comfort or luggage capacity. Neither source supplies a like-for-like boot volume measurement, second-row access measurement or child-seat installation result.
How to compare family usability
- Open both rear doors fully and check whether a child seat can be installed without forcing the front seat too far forward.
- Measure the rear-seat cushion and check whether two adults can sit beside a child seat.
- Load the luggage you routinely carry, including the spare wheel’s effect on usable cargo space.
- Check the tailgate opening, sill height and visibility over the shoulder rather than relying on exterior dimensions.
- Drive with all intended occupants. A five-seat label does not describe the comfort of five adults on a long trip.
Off-road equipment and limits
What is listed for the T2
The cited 2.0TD T2 configurations have real-time 4WD and a listed ground clearance of 220 mm. The 1.5TD configuration is front-wheel drive, so it should not be treated as an off-road equivalent to the 2.0TD versions. The global specification does not provide an independent trail test, approach or departure angle assessment, tyre performance test, or recovery-capability result.
What is listed for the Thar ROXX
Mahindra describes 4XPLOR terrain modes, electronic locking differentials on 4×4 variants, Crawl Smart Assist and IntelliTurn. These systems are not universal across every ROXX trim. Mahindra’s launch wording says, “The 4Xplor System provides superior traction through Electronic Locking Differentials, making challenging terrains feel effortless.” That is the manufacturer’s product description, not an independently verified performance finding.

The same release states a 650 mm water-wading depth. Treat that as a manufacturer-stated specification, not permission to enter water at that depth. Water speed, current, surface, tyre condition, vehicle load, air-intake position and the owner’s manual limits all affect whether a crossing is safe.

Choosing for trails, sand and rough access roads
- Occasional gravel and damaged roads: either model’s suitable configuration may work, but tyre specification and local service support deserve as much attention as clearance.
- Rocky or deeply rutted trails: compare the T2 2.0 real-time 4WD with a specific ROXX 4×4 variant and verify locking-differential and terrain-mode availability.
- Sand or mud: ask about the drive-mode procedure, tyre pressures, recovery points and the warranty position before attempting difficult terrain.
- Water crossings: follow the manual and local conditions. A published wading number is not a substitute for preparation or judgment.
Safety equipment is trim-specific
Jetour’s table lists airbags, tyre-pressure monitoring, stability control and braking equipment. Several driver-assistance features appear under the Lux configuration. Confirm whether the vehicle offered to you is that configuration and whether each feature is standard, optional or unavailable in your market.
Mahindra says six airbags are standard on the Thar ROXX and describes Level 2 ADAS among the equipment on applicable variants. “Standard” should still be checked against the exact model year and local price list, especially when a dealer is quoting a different trim or a later production batch.
Feature counts do not establish crash performance. The cited material does not provide equivalent independent crash-test results for both vehicles, so this comparison cannot identify a safer SUV. Before purchase, look for an applicable, independent assessment of the exact body style and equipment level sold in your market.
India availability, price and ownership checks
Jetour T2: global data is not an India launch confirmation
The available T2 page is global and carries a regional-variation warning. It does not establish that the T2 is currently sold in India, that an Indian distributor exists, or that parts, warranty and roadside assistance are available. Do not place a deposit based solely on an international specification sheet.

Ask for a written confirmation of the selling entity, homologation status, warranty terms, service locations, delivery timeline, insurance requirements and the exact equipment list. If the seller cannot provide those documents, treat the T2 as an unconfirmed market option rather than a normal showroom comparison.
Thar ROXX: a historical launch price, not today’s on-road cost
Mahindra’s September 2024 announcement put the starting price for ROXX 4×4 variants at ₹18.79 lakh. That was an introductory figure at launch and is not evidence of the current ex-showroom or on-road price. Taxes, registration, insurance, accessories, financing and later price revisions can materially change the amount you pay.
Request a city-specific quotation showing variant, drivetrain, transmission, ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, taxes, accessories and delivery charges. Compare like-for-like 4×4 and two-wheel-drive versions; a lower headline price may reflect a different drivetrain or equipment level.

Choose the Thar ROXX when these priorities dominate
- You want an India-market product with a documented launch and a local dealer quotation to verify.
- You need a choice between turbo-petrol and diesel rather than the T2’s listed engine family.
- You prefer to select a manual or automatic transmission according to the exact variant.
- You specifically want published 4XPLOR features, terrain modes or electronic locking differentials on a suitable 4×4.
- You are prepared to check current prices and equipment instead of relying on the 2024 launch announcement.
Consider the T2 only when these conditions are satisfied
- Your local market confirms that the T2 is legally sold, supported and warrantied.
- The larger stated body width or length suits your use, and you have checked that parking and trail access are practical.
- You are comparing the 2.0TD real-time 4WD configuration, not the front-wheel-drive 1.5TD, for off-road work.
- The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission matches your preference.
- You have a firm local price and delivery commitment, not only an international specification.
For family buyers
Do not award the practical-space decision from dimensions alone. Bring the child seats, luggage and passengers you use most often to the showroom. Check rear access, seating posture, air-conditioning reach, visibility and the loading height. The supplied specifications do not establish a cabin-space winner.

Start with driven wheels, differential hardware, terrain controls and tyre specification. Then ask how recovery points, underbody protection and the warranty apply to your intended use. Ground clearance and a claimed wading depth are useful reference figures, but neither replaces route assessment or the vehicle manual.

A buyer’s verification checklist
- Identify the exact variant: record engine, gearbox, driven wheels, trim and model year on the quotation.
- Verify equipment: ask which airbags, ADAS functions, locking differentials, terrain modes and tyre-pressure systems are fitted to that vehicle.
- Confirm market support: for the T2, obtain written proof of India-market sale, warranty, parts and service coverage.
- Price the complete vehicle: request an itemised, city-specific on-road quote and check its validity date.
- Inspect the cabin: test rear-seat access, child-seat fit, luggage loading and visibility with your household.
- Drive both configurations you are actually considering: a front-wheel-drive T2, a 2.0 4WD T2, a rear-wheel-drive ROXX and a 4×4 ROXX are not interchangeable test-drive subjects.
- Check independent evidence: search for a crash assessment that matches the exact vehicle sold in your country, and keep reliability and ownership claims separate from manufacturer specifications.
Preparing either SUV for a road or trail trip
A portable 12V tyre inflator for SUVs is a practical general accessory, particularly when checking pressures before leaving paved roads. Verify the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure, the inflator’s connector and power requirements, and any tyre-maker guidance. An inflator is not approved equipment from either manufacturer and cannot repair sidewall damage or replace a proper puncture kit.
Before a trip, inspect tread and sidewalls, check the spare wheel, carry recovery equipment appropriate to the route, and make sure passengers know the vehicle’s drive-mode controls. Use the pressure and water-crossing limits in the owner’s manual rather than copying a number from another SUV.
What the published evidence cannot answer
The available manufacturer material does not establish a current T2 price or India availability, a current ROXX price beyond the historical introductory announcement, independent fuel-economy or acceleration results, comparative ride quality, total ownership cost, reliability, or an independent safety winner. The Jetour T2 is worth investigating only after local availability, warranty, service and price are confirmed; its global 2.0-litre real-time 4WD specification and larger body may then suit a different buyer. Compare exact variants, not model names, and make the final decision only after checking the vehicle in person.
