Short answer: Current independent reliability assessments favor the Toyota 4Runner, but they do not prove that every 4Runner will suffer fewer failures than every Jeep Wrangler on a trail. Consumer Reports rates the redesigned 2025 4Runner much more reliable than other cars from its model year, expects the 2026 4Runner to be much more reliable than average, and expects the 2026 Wrangler to be less reliable than average. Those findings come from owner-survey data and model-year forecasts—not matched, long-term off-road failure testing.
Your best choice depends on the exact model year, trim, four-wheel-drive hardware, modifications, maintenance history and recall status. A carefully maintained Wrangler with suitable equipment can be dependable off-road; a poorly maintained or heavily modified 4Runner can be an expensive recovery project.

What the reliability evidence actually shows
The strongest current signal points to the 4Runner, with an important qualification: the available studies do not isolate trail failures or compare identical trims on identical terrain.
| Vehicle and year | Published finding | What the finding represents |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 Toyota 4Runner | “Much more reliable than other cars from the same model year,” according to Consumer Reports’ 2025 4Runner reliability page. | Result based on the latest owner survey for 2025 4Runner owners. |
| 2026 Toyota 4Runner | Expected to be much more reliable than average. | Forecast based on data from the redesigned 2025 model. |
| 2026 Jeep Wrangler | Expected to be less reliable than the average new car. | Forecast based on 2023, 2024 and 2025 Wrangler models. |
Consumer Reports says its reliability history comes from an annual subscriber survey covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots. That is a broad ownership signal, not a model-specific sample size and not a measurement of breakdowns during rock crawling, mud driving or water crossings. The organization’s 2026 Wrangler forecast uses 2023–2025 model-year information, while the 2026 4Runner forecast is tied to data from the redesigned 2025 model.

The model-year distinction matters. The 2025 4Runner is a redesigned generation, so older 4Runner reputations cannot automatically be transferred to it. Likewise, the 2026 Wrangler prediction is a statistical expectation derived from earlier model years, not a completed durability record for every 2026 vehicle. A buyer should treat both statements as probabilities for a population of vehicles, not a diagnosis of the SUV parked in a dealer’s lot.
How Consumer Reports’ numbers should be read
Consumer Reports’ reliability history is built from its annual subscriber survey. The roughly 380,000-vehicle survey asks about 20 potential trouble spots and summarizes what owners experienced. It is valuable because it reflects real ownership over time, but it is not a laboratory endurance test and does not expose every vehicle to the same trail conditions.
Owner-survey results and forecasts also answer different questions. The statement that the 2025 4Runner was “much more reliable than other cars from the same model year” describes reported experience with that model year. The 2026 4Runner and Wrangler statements are expectations: one projects strong reliability from the 2025 redesign, and the other projects below-average reliability from the preceding three Wrangler years. They should not be presented as equivalent scores or as a direct head-to-head failure rate.
There is no cited matched-trim study that follows a Wrangler and a 4Runner through the same number of rock, mud, snow and water miles. Consequently, it is not defensible to say that one model has a particular percentage chance of breaking on a trail, that one will always last longer off-road, or that either model is immune to damage caused by impacts, contamination or poor modifications.
Why off-road reliability is harder to measure
“Reliable off-road” combines several different questions:
- Does the vehicle’s powertrain and four-wheel-drive system avoid mechanical or electronic failures?
- Can its traction systems keep moving when one or more wheels lose grip?
- Will its suspension, steering and underbody tolerate repeated impacts?
- Can the owner obtain parts and service after trail damage?
- Was the particular vehicle maintained correctly and left close to factory specification?
A vehicle may score well in broad reliability yet suffer damage from a single severe obstacle. Conversely, a vehicle with a less favorable average forecast may complete years of moderate trail use if it is serviced correctly and operated within its design limits. Water crossings, mud and repeated impacts create conditions that an owner survey does not standardize. Tires, wheel size, lift parts, recovery gear and added electrical accessories can change stresses without changing the badge on the hood.
Separate capability from dependability. A low-range gear, traction-control strategy or crawl function can help the driver avoid wheelspin and choose a manageable speed. Those features may reduce driver workload, but their presence does not establish a lower failure rate. Electronic controls, sensors, actuators and mechanical parts all must work together, and the equipment differs by trim.

Four-wheel-drive systems and trail hardware
Reliability comparisons need to start with the hardware on the vehicle you are actually considering. A base trim and a trail-oriented trim can have different transfer cases, different traction aids and different tires.
2025 Wrangler: Command-Trac context
Jeep’s 2025 Wrangler FAQ describes Command-Trac as a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a 2.72:1 low-range ratio. The system provides 2WD, 4Hi, 4Low and Neutral modes. Part-time four-wheel drive is intended for surfaces where extra traction is needed; using locked four-wheel drive on high-grip pavement can create driveline bind. The presence of a low range and selectable modes tells you how the system is configured, but it does not establish a failure rate or prove greater reliability.

When comparing a Wrangler, verify that the vehicle actually has the Command-Trac arrangement described for the configuration under consideration. Do not infer transfer-case equipment solely from a seller’s use of the words “4×4” or “off-road.” Check the build sheet, window sticker or manufacturer specifications, then test the mode selection with an inspector.
2025 4Runner: transfer case and traction aids
Toyota’s 2025 4Runner announcement describes 4WD models with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and Auto LSD. It also says next-generation CRAWL Control is available. CRAWL Control functions as low-speed off-road cruise control, helping manage vehicle speed while the driver concentrates on steering over difficult terrain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese features change how the vehicle negotiates obstacles. They do not, by themselves, establish which model will need fewer repairs. Electronic controls, sensors, actuators and mechanical components all need to work together, and the specific equipment varies by trim and powertrain. Confirm whether a particular 4Runner is two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive and whether the advertised traction aids are standard or optional.
2026 4Runner grades and configuration differences
Toyota lists nine 2026 4Runner grades: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter.
Toyota says Limited offers available full-time four-wheel drive with a center-locking differential on i-FORCE MAX models, while that equipment is standard on Platinum. Confirm the engine, transfer case and option package on a particular vehicle before comparing it with a Wrangler. A 4Runner Limited, a TRD Pro and an SR5 are not interchangeable reference points, just as Wrangler configurations can differ in their four-wheel-drive equipment and intended use.
The nine-grade lineup also means that a reliability conclusion drawn from one test vehicle should not automatically be applied to every 2026 4Runner. Record the powertrain and drive system, then compare vehicles with similar equipment and intended duty. If a listing does not identify the transfer case, differential arrangement or traction features, treat that omission as a reason to obtain documentation rather than as evidence that the vehicles are equivalent.
How to make an apples-to-apples comparison
Use the following checklist for both vehicles. Record the actual equipment rather than relying on the model name.
- Identify the model year and generation. Treat the 2025 4Runner redesign as its own evidence set, and do not use a general reputation as a substitute for year-specific information.
- Record the transfer case. Note whether the vehicle has two-speed gearing, the stated low-range ratio and the available drive modes.
- Check traction and differential equipment. List A-TRAC, Auto LSD, CRAWL Control, a center-locking differential or any other system installed on that exact trim.
- Inspect tires and suspension. Tire type, sidewall strength, wheel size, ride height and suspension changes affect the loads placed on steering and drivetrain components.
- Document modifications. Lift kits, oversized tires, re-gearing, bumpers, winches and electrical accessories can improve capability while adding weight, leverage or new failure points.
- Compare use history. A vehicle used for occasional forest roads has a different duty cycle from one repeatedly used in deep mud, rocks or water.
- Match the service network to your routes. Ask where the vehicle was maintained and where warranty or recall work can be completed. Roadside assistance and dealer access matter more when trips take you far from home.
This approach prevents a fully equipped trail trim from being judged against a base vehicle as though they had identical systems. It also makes a used-vehicle inspection more efficient because the inspector knows which modes, components and modifications to verify.
Recall counts are a safety check, not a reliability score
Recall totals are snapshots from the pages consulted and can change. They indicate known safety or compliance issues, not the total number of mechanical problems a vehicle will experience.

Before buying, run the vehicle identification number through the manufacturer and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall systems, then ask whether every remedy was completed. Do this even when a listing advertises a low recall count; the count can change after a page is updated, and an individual vehicle may have an open campaign that is not obvious from a model-level summary.
For a used SUV, obtain repair orders showing the recall remedy, not merely a seller’s verbal assurance. A recall count of one or six does not tell you how severe each campaign was, whether the vehicle experienced the defect, or whether unrelated maintenance was neglected. Use the VIN result as one ownership check alongside the inspection and service file.
What ownership coverage tells you
Toyota’s 2025 4Runner announcement states a 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty, ToyotaCare scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and two years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. Confirm the terms, exclusions and regional coverage for the exact vehicle and delivery location because warranty programs can vary by market and vehicle configuration.
Warranty coverage is not a forecast of off-road durability. It does, however, affect the financial risk of early defects and the support available when a covered component fails. Compare the actual warranty booklet and in-service date rather than assuming every used example has the same remaining coverage. ToyotaCare’s mileage and time limits also mean a high-mileage owner can reach the scheduled-maintenance limit before two calendar years.
The available ownership information does not establish a comparative repair-cost advantage for either model. Avoid treating the warranty, roadside assistance or recall totals as a promise of lower long-term expenses. Instead, use them to understand what support may be available for the specific vehicle and to identify questions for the dealer or seller.

Road-test results are not trail-reliability results
Consumer Reports’ 2025 road-test report says it purchased a 2025 4Runner SR5 4WD from an area dealer for $44,630. The report says the 4Runner earned a higher road-test score than the Wrangler and Bronco. That is a controlled road-test comparison, not evidence that the 4Runner will have fewer off-road failures or survive harsher trails.
The $44,630 transaction is the price of that particular test vehicle, not a universal 4Runner price or a cost comparison with a Wrangler. Taxes, fees, options, incentives and regional pricing can change what a buyer pays. Use the figure only as context for the tested SR5 4WD and obtain a current quote for the exact configuration.
Use road-test scores to understand on-road performance and usability. Use reliability surveys, service records, inspection findings and recall completion to assess ownership risk. Keep those evidence categories separate: a higher road score measures test performance, while an owner survey summarizes reported trouble spots and a VIN search identifies campaigns affecting one vehicle.
Which one is the safer reliability bet?
Choose the 4Runner when broad reliability confidence is your priority
The 4Runner is the more defensible choice if you want the current independent reliability outlook to carry the most weight. The 2025 owner-survey result is strongly positive, and the 2026 forecast remains much better than average. This is especially relevant to buyers who spend most of their time commuting and use trails occasionally, because broad vehicle reliability covers more of their ownership than extreme trail capability.

Verify the trim and powertrain. A 4Runner’s equipment, hybrid system, transfer case and differential configuration can differ substantially across the nine 2026 grades. A strong model-level forecast cannot eliminate the need to check the individual vehicle’s condition, recall status and maintenance.
Choose the Wrangler when its configuration and use case fit better
The Wrangler remains a rational choice when its specific four-wheel-drive layout, body configuration or trail setup is the deciding factor. The available evidence does not say that every Wrangler is unreliable, nor does it quantify failures by trail severity. A lightly used, unmodified Wrangler with complete maintenance records can be a better purchase than a neglected 4Runner with unknown modifications.
If you are considering a 2026 Wrangler, treat the “less reliable than average” forecast as a reason to inspect carefully and budget for ownership risk—not as proof that a particular vehicle will fail. Ask for evidence of scheduled service, examine the underbody and verify that four-wheel-drive modes operate correctly before committing.
Used-vehicle inspection for either model
Reliability is partly a property of the model and partly a property of the example in front of you. Arrange an independent inspection before purchase, especially when the vehicle has trail modifications. Tell the inspector how the SUV was used and request a written report with photographs where possible.

Do not rely on a clean dashboard alone. Intermittent four-wheel-drive faults, previous impact damage and poorly installed accessories may not appear during a short test drive. A seller who cannot document the modification work or explain water exposure should be evaluated more cautiously than a comparable vehicle with a complete file.

- What is the exact model year, trim, engine and four-wheel-drive configuration?
- Which transfer case and low-range ratio does this vehicle use?
- Has it been used in mud, deep water, rock trails or recovery operations?
- Which parts were modified, who installed them and are the original parts included?
- Are there dated records for fluid changes and other scheduled service?
- Have all VIN-specific recalls been completed, and can you provide the repair documentation?

These questions do not replace an inspection, but they reveal whether the seller understands the vehicle’s configuration and can support the claims being made in the listing.
A practical decision framework
| Your priority | How to weigh the evidence | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest broad reliability risk | Give the current 4Runner owner-survey result and forecast more weight. | Exact model year, redesign-related equipment, warranty status and VIN recalls. |
| Frequent, demanding trail use | Judge the complete drivetrain and modification package; broad survey ratings are not trail-failure tests. | Low range, traction systems, differential equipment, tires, underbody condition and service history. |
| Buying used | Condition and previous use can outweigh the model’s average reputation. | Independent inspection, maintenance records, water or impact damage and accessory installation. |
| Mostly road driving with occasional trails | General reliability and warranty support may matter more than maximum trail hardware. | Comfort, road-test priorities, exact trim and remaining coverage. |
| Comparing new 2025–2026 vehicles | Keep the redesign and forecast years separate rather than blending older reputations. | Window sticker, build sheet, delivery date, current recall status and applicable warranty booklet. |
Bottom line for Wrangler-versus-4Runner shoppers
On the evidence currently available, the Toyota 4Runner is the safer broad reliability bet: Consumer Reports reports a very strong 2025 result and forecasts above-average reliability for 2026, while its 2026 Wrangler forecast is below average. That conclusion is qualified by the evidence boundary. No cited source provides matched-trim, same-terrain off-road failure rates, so neither vehicle can be declared universally more dependable on trails.
Make the final decision using the exact year and trim, transfer-case and traction hardware, modification history, maintenance records, inspection results and VIN-specific recall status. Those details determine whether the particular Wrangler or 4Runner in front of you is ready for the kind of off-road use you actually plan.

Is the Toyota 4Runner more reliable than the Jeep Wrangler off-road?
Current Consumer Reports assessments favor the 4Runner for broad reliability. The 2025 4Runner was described as much more reliable than other cars from its model year, and the 2026 4Runner is expected to be much more reliable than average. The 2026 Wrangler is expected to be less reliable than average. These findings do not measure matched off-road failure rates, so they are a broad ownership signal rather than proof that every 4Runner will outperform every Wrangler on a trail.

- DISPLAY READY: Vibrant exterior finish with contrasting black trim design captures the essence of the real Jeep Wrangler
Does the 2025 4Runner redesign change the comparison?
Yes. The 2025 4Runner is a redesigned model year, and Consumer Reports’ 2026 forecast uses data from that redesign. Older-generation 4Runner reputation should not be transferred automatically; verify the exact year, powertrain, transfer case and trim.
What does Consumer Reports’ reliability information measure?
Consumer Reports says its annual subscriber survey covers about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots. The result reflects owner-reported problems across general use. It is not a controlled test of rock crawling, mud, water crossings or trail breakdowns, and the survey size is not a model-specific sample count.
Which Wrangler four-wheel-drive system is described for 2025?
Jeep’s 2025 Wrangler FAQ describes Command-Trac as part-time four-wheel drive with a 2.72:1 low-range ratio and 2WD, 4Hi, 4Low and Neutral modes. Confirm the actual vehicle’s equipment because Wrangler configurations can differ.
What off-road systems does the 2025 4Runner offer?
Toyota describes 4WD 2025 4Runner models with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case, A-TRAC and Auto LSD. Next-generation CRAWL Control is available. These features affect operation and traction management but do not independently prove a lower failure rate.
How many recalls do these model years have?
The accessed Consumer Reports pages listed three recalls for the 2026 Wrangler, two for the 2026 4Runner, one for the 2025 4Runner and six for the 2025 Wrangler. Counts can change. Check the vehicle identification number with the manufacturer and NHTSA before purchase and confirm that remedies were completed.
What warranty and maintenance coverage is listed for the 2025 4Runner?
Toyota’s 2025 announcement states a 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty, ToyotaCare scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and two years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. Confirm exclusions, regional terms and the remaining coverage on a used vehicle.
What should I inspect on a used Wrangler or 4Runner?
Review dated maintenance records, inspect the underbody and suspension for impact damage, test every four-wheel-drive mode, look for corrosion or contamination from water and mud, check tire wear and alignment, evaluate lift and electrical modifications, and verify VIN-specific recall completion. An independent inspection is especially important for modified vehicles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Does a higher road-test score mean better off-road reliability?
No. Consumer Reports reported that its tested 2025 4Runner SR5 4WD, purchased for $44,630, scored higher in its road test than the Wrangler and Bronco. A road-test score measures test performance and usability; it does not establish trail-failure frequency or long-term off-road durability.
The Bottom Line
Verdict: The Toyota 4Runner has the stronger broad reliability outlook for 2025–2026, but no matched study proves it is universally more dependable off-road. Compare the exact trim and drivetrain, then verify maintenance, modifications, inspection results and VIN-specific recalls before buying.
