The Jeep Wrangler has four main generations in the United States: YJ (1987–1995), TJ (1997–2006), JK (2007–2018), and JL (2018–2026 as of August 11, 2026). There is no standard U.S. 1996 Wrangler model year; that year falls between the YJ and TJ generations.
The quickest way to identify one is by its headlights and suspension: the YJ has rectangular headlights and leaf springs, the TJ returns to round headlights and coil springs, the JK introduces the factory four-door Wrangler Unlimited, and the JL modernizes the platform while adding the 4xe plug-in hybrid and Rubicon 392 in selected years.
Jeep Wrangler generations at a glance
| Generation | U.S. model years | Body styles | Quick identification |
|---|---|---|---|
| YJ | 1987–1995 | Two-door | Rectangular headlights; leaf-spring suspension |
| TJ | 1997–2006 | Two-door; long-wheelbase Unlimited from 2004 | Round headlights; coil-spring suspension |
| JK | 2007–2018 | Two-door; four-door Unlimited | First factory four-door Wrangler generation |
| JL | 2018–2026* | Two-door; four-door Unlimited | Modernized body and interior; available 4xe and 392 variants |
*The JL remains the current generation as of August 11, 2026. Model-year availability can vary by market and trim.
These are U.S. model-year ranges, not necessarily the exact calendar years when production began or ended. Jeep historical material may describe a generation by production or calendar-year dates, which is why some sources show the YJ as “1987–1996.” For buying, registration, insurance, parts lookup, and recalls, use the vehicle’s VIN, title, certification label, and exact model year.

YJ: 1987–1995
The YJ was the first Wrangler generation and replaced the CJ line. Jeep introduced the all-new Wrangler during the 1986 transition, with the first U.S. model-year vehicles sold as 1987 Wranglers. The earliest YJs were developed under American Motors; Chrysler acquired AMC and the Jeep brand in 1987.
The easiest YJ identifier is its pair of rectangular headlights. Jeep departed from the traditional round CJ headlights for the YJ, then reversed course when the TJ arrived. The YJ retained the removable doors, fold-down windshield, open-top body, and conventional four-wheel-drive layout associated with the Jeep lineage.
Compared with the CJ, the YJ used wider axles and revised chassis and suspension engineering. It still relied on leaf springs, however, making its suspension architecture fundamentally different from the coil-spring TJ that followed.
Important YJ developments
- The Sahara package appeared during the YJ run.
- The 4.0-liter inline-six replaced the earlier six-cylinder engine in the early 1990s.
- Safety, emissions equipment, transmissions, axles, and other details changed during the generation.
The regular U.S. YJ model-year run is generally treated as 1987 through 1995. Some YJs were built or sold into calendar 1996, which accounts for conflicting date ranges in historical summaries. That does not make 1996 a normal U.S. Wrangler model year.

In the normal U.S. sequence, a 1995 YJ is followed by a 1997 TJ. The TJ was introduced in 1996 as a 1997 model, creating a transition between the two model-year designations.
A vehicle described as a “1996 Jeep Wrangler” may reflect a production date, registration date, import paperwork, a seller’s mistake, or inconsistent title information. It may also be a late-built YJ or an early TJ identified by a calendar date rather than its official model year.
For a disputed vehicle, check these items before ordering parts:
- Compare the VIN with the title and registration.
- Read the federal certification label, usually found on the driver-side door area or door jamb.
- Confirm whether the vehicle has YJ rectangular headlights and leaf springs or TJ round headlights and coil springs.
- Use the verified VIN and model year in the parts catalog.
Do not assume that a registration date overrides the manufacturer’s model-year designation. For a questionable import, modified vehicle, or “1996 Wrangler,” a VIN and title check is more reliable than a seller’s listing headline.

TJ: 1997–2006
The TJ was the second Wrangler generation. It launched as a 1997 model with round headlights, a redesigned interior, driver and passenger airbags, removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and soft- or removable-hardtop choices.
The TJ’s defining engineering change was its move from leaf springs to a four-link coil-spring suspension. The vehicle retained solid axles and a traditional off-road layout, but the coil-spring design improved ride quality and suspension articulation compared with the YJ.
The 4.0-liter AMC inline-six was a prominent TJ engine, while four-cylinder and later PowerTech engine configurations varied by year. Engine, transmission, emissions, axle, and wiring differences matter when ordering repair parts.
2003: the first Wrangler Rubicon
The Rubicon name debuted on the TJ for the 2003 model year. It was not merely an appearance package. The original Rubicon added equipment intended to improve low-speed traction and off-road durability, including:

- Front and rear Tru-Lok locking differentials
- Rock-Trac four-wheel drive
- 31-inch Goodyear MT/R tires
- Four-wheel disc brakes
- Rock rails
Those components make a TJ Rubicon materially different from many Sport and Sahara models. A part listed for a TJ should not automatically be assumed to fit a TJ Rubicon, particularly around axles, differential components, driveshafts, brakes, wheels, and suspension.
2004: the TJ Wrangler Unlimited, or “LJ”
The long-wheelbase TJ Wrangler Unlimited arrived for the 2004 model year. It remained a two-door Wrangler but stretched the wheelbase to 103 inches, creating more cargo room, additional rear-seat legroom, and improved on-road comfort.
Enthusiasts commonly call this version the LJ. LJ is a widely used informal designation for the long-wheelbase TJ, not a separate primary Wrangler generation.
The 2005 Rubicon Unlimited combined the longer Unlimited body with Rubicon equipment. It is therefore important to distinguish a standard TJ, a TJ Unlimited/LJ, and a Rubicon Unlimited when shopping for body, top, interior, drivetrain, and suspension parts.

JK: 2007–2018
The JK was the third Wrangler generation. Jeep introduced it as an all-new design with a revised frame, exterior, interior, engines, safety systems, and convenience equipment.
Its biggest change was the arrival of the factory four-door Wrangler Unlimited. The JK was sold in both two-door and four-door forms, allowing buyers to choose between the traditional short-wheelbase layout and a much more practical passenger and cargo configuration.
“JK” generally refers to both body styles. Enthusiasts often use JKU as shorthand for the four-door Unlimited, but JKU is not a separate official generation code.
What changed during the JK run?
The JK remained recognizable as a Wrangler: it retained solid axles, removable doors, removable tops, and an open-air design. It also added substantially more modern safety, comfort, and electronic systems than the TJ.

Jeep also made hardtop and equipment changes, including Sahara-specific hardtop updates. Consequently, a part that fits a 2007–2010 JK may not fit a 2011–2018 JK even when the generation, body style, and trim name appear similar.
For parts research, separate the following:
- 2007–2010 versus 2011–2018 model years
- Two-door JK versus four-door JK Unlimited
- Rubicon versus Sport or Sahara axle and suspension equipment
- Engine, transmission, brake, wiring, and production-date differences
JL: 2018–2026 as of August 11, 2026
The JL is the fourth-generation Wrangler and the current generation as of the research date. Jeep first released the JL to the public in 2018, and it continues in two-door and four-door Unlimited configurations.
The JL preserves the Wrangler’s removable doors, fold-down windshield, removable roof options, solid axles, and open-air identity while adding a more modern body, interior, electrical architecture, safety equipment, and convenience technology.
Notable JL features
- Lighter removable doors
- A redesigned three-piece Freedom Top hardtop
- The available Sky One-Touch power top
- Two-door and four-door Unlimited body styles
- Expanded driver-assistance, infotainment, and electronic systems compared with earlier generations
The JL’s doors, tops, electronics, wiring, bumpers, suspension components, and interior parts should not be assumed to interchange with JK equipment simply because both vehicles are four-door Wranglers.

2021: Wrangler 4xe
The Wrangler 4xe arrived for the 2021 model year. It is a plug-in hybrid using a turbocharged gasoline engine, electric motors, and a high-voltage battery. Its selectable driving modes include Electric, eSave, and Hybrid.
The 4xe is still a JL Wrangler, but its high-voltage system, battery packaging, powertrain controls, charging equipment, and some service procedures make it a separate fitment and repair category. A gasoline JL manual or part is not automatically appropriate for a 4xe.
Rubicon 392
The Rubicon 392 is a high-performance JL variant powered by a V8. Its availability is year- and market-dependent. Because it combines a different powertrain with Rubicon-oriented hardware, buyers should verify exact model year and equipment before ordering engine, exhaust, cooling, drivetrain, suspension, or electronic components.
2023 and 2026 milestones
- 2023: Rubicon 20th Anniversary editions commemorated the Rubicon’s 2003 introduction.
- 2025: The Wrangler continued with multiple four-wheel-drive systems, removable/open-air configurations, and the 4xe plug-in hybrid.
- 2026: Jeep continued marketing the JL in two- and four-door forms, including model-specific special editions such as the 85th Anniversary Edition. Exact availability depends on market and trim.

How to identify a Wrangler generation before buying parts
Generation identification is a starting point, not a complete fitment check. Use this sequence:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Confirm the model year. Start with the VIN, title, certification label, and factory parts catalog—not the registration date alone.
- Identify the generation. Rectangular headlights and leaf springs indicate YJ; round headlights and coil springs indicate TJ or later.
- Check the body style. A two-door TJ Unlimited/LJ is different from a standard TJ, while JK and JL parts frequently separate two-door and four-door Unlimited applications.
- Verify the trim and axle package. Rubicon equipment can change differential, axle, brake, wheel, suspension, and driveshaft compatibility.
- Confirm the powertrain. Engine, transmission, diesel availability, 4xe hybrid equipment, and Rubicon 392 hardware can all affect fitment.
- Check the production date where required. Mid-generation updates can create a parts break even when the model-year range appears continuous.

| Rectangular headlights and leaf springs | YJ, 1987–1995 | Exact engine, transmission, axle, and emissions configuration |
| Round headlights and coil springs; two doors | TJ, 1997–2006 | Standard TJ versus Unlimited/LJ and Rubicon equipment |
| Round headlights; factory four doors; JK styling | JK Unlimited, 2007–2018 | 2007–2010 versus 2011–2018, engine, trim, and production date |

Repair manuals and service information
A generation guide can tell you where to begin, but it cannot replace vehicle-specific factory service information. A Jeep Wrangler repair manual can be useful for maintenance, diagnostics, wiring references, torque procedures, and component removal—but select it by generation, model year, engine, and body style.
Haynes lists broad gasoline Wrangler coverage for 1987–2017, separate JK coverage for 2011–2018, and JL manuals covering 2018–2023. The JL manual specifically excludes diesel and 4xe plug-in-hybrid models. That means there is no single book that should be treated as universal coverage for every YJ, TJ, JK, and JL configuration.
Before purchasing a manual, confirm:
- Whether it covers YJ, TJ, JK, or JL
- The exact model-year range
- Gasoline, diesel, or 4xe powertrain coverage
- Two-door versus four-door procedures where relevant
- Whether the manual covers the electrical and diagnostic systems on the vehicle
Accessories, modifications, and recovery equipment
Wrangler-specific products include floor mats, cargo liners, seat covers, tops, recovery gear, winches, lighting, bumpers, suspension components, wheels, tires, and maintenance tools. These are useful categories for restoration and upgrades, but the fitment risk is high.
When shopping for Jeep Wrangler accessories by year, verify the generation, body style, wheelbase, trim, and—in the case of electrical products—whether the vehicle is a gasoline JL, 4xe, or Rubicon 392. A floor mat for a four-door JK is not necessarily correct for a two-door JK; a TJ LJ top is not a standard TJ top; and a JK bumper or roof component should not be presumed to fit a JL.

For recovery gear, winches, bumpers, suspension, and armor, also check the vehicle’s existing modifications. Lift height, axle swaps, wheel backspacing, tire size, aftermarket steering components, and relocated electronics can change what will safely fit. Genuine Mopar accessories and performance parts provide vehicle-specific fitment information, but aftermarket listings still need the same careful checks.
Names that are often confused
- CJ
- The predecessor series. The Wrangler name begins with the YJ; CJ is not a Wrangler generation.
- Unlimited
- A body-style or wheelbase designation, not a separate generation. It identifies the long-wheelbase TJ variant and the four-door JK and JL variants, among other usage contexts.
- Rubicon
- An off-road-oriented trim, not a generation. Rubicon equipment varies by generation and model year.
- LJ
- An enthusiast abbreviation for the long-wheelbase TJ Wrangler Unlimited, especially the 2004–2006 version.
- JKU
- An enthusiast shorthand commonly used for the four-door JK Wrangler Unlimited. It is not a separate official generation.
- 4xe
- A JL plug-in-hybrid powertrain variant introduced for 2021, not a separate Wrangler generation.
- 392
- A V8-powered high-performance JL variant offered in selected years and markets, not a separate generation.
What to remember
For most identification questions, the sequence is simple: YJ, 1987–1995; no normal 1996 model year; TJ, 1997–2006; JK, 2007–2018; JL, 2018–2026 as of August 11, 2026. Use the generation to narrow the search, then confirm model year, body style, wheelbase, engine, transmission, axle package, trim, and production date before buying parts or service information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was there a 1996 Jeep Wrangler?
There was no standard U.S. 1996 Wrangler model year. The YJ normally ended with the 1995 model year, while the TJ was introduced in 1996 as a 1997 model. A vehicle listed as a 1996 Wrangler should be checked against its VIN, title, certification label, and actual design.
Which Wrangler generation has rectangular headlights?
The YJ, sold primarily as a 1987–1995 U.S. model, has rectangular headlights. The TJ returned to round headlights for 1997.
What year did the four-door Wrangler begin?
The four-door Wrangler Unlimited debuted with the JK generation for the 2007 model year. The earlier TJ Unlimited was a stretched two-door.
Is an LJ a separate Wrangler generation?
No. LJ is an enthusiast term for the long-wheelbase TJ Wrangler Unlimited, primarily the 2004–2006 version. The official generation remains TJ.
Is JK the same as JKU?
JK is the generation designation used for both two-door and four-door Wranglers from 2007–2018. JKU is common enthusiast shorthand for the four-door JK Unlimited, not a separate generation.
What is the difference between a JL and a JK?
The JL is the fourth-generation Wrangler introduced for 2018, while the JK is the third generation from 2007–2018. The JL has a more modernized body, interior, electrical systems, and open-air equipment, and it added variants such as the 4xe plug-in hybrid. Parts should be checked by exact fitment rather than assumed interchangeable.
Does every TJ part fit a TJ Rubicon or LJ?
No. Rubicon axles, lockers, brakes, wheels, suspension, and drivetrain components can differ from other TJs, while the long-wheelbase LJ has different body, top, interior, cargo, and wheelbase requirements. Verify the exact configuration.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: U.S. Wrangler generations are YJ (1987–1995), TJ (1997–2006), JK (2007–2018), and JL (2018–2026 as of August 11, 2026). Treat 1996 as a transition-year warning, not a normal model year, and never use the generation code alone for parts or repair decisions.
