For most 2026 Ram 1500 buyers, the standard-output 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six is the better engine. It makes more power and torque than the returning 5.7-liter HEMI V8, accelerates more quickly in independent testing, and carries higher published maximum towing and payload ratings in selected configurations.
The HEMI remains the emotional choice. Its naturally aspirated V8 character, familiar response, and louder exhaust note are compelling reasons to choose it—but not because it is the strongest or most efficient engine. Choose the high-output Hurricane only when acceleration matters more than fuel economy and maximum truck utility.
The short answer
The 2026 Ram 1500 brings back the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 after the engine was absent from the 2025 Ram 1500 lineup. It joins three other gasoline engines: the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, the standard-output 3.0-liter twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six, and the high-output 3.0-liter twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six.
For the meaningful V8-versus-inline-six decision:
- Buy the standard-output Hurricane for the best mix of towing, payload, acceleration, fuel economy, and value.
- Buy the HEMI V8 for its sound, naturally aspirated feel, and traditional Ram V8 character.
- Buy the high-output Hurricane for maximum acceleration, provided you accept higher fuel consumption and lower published maximum towing and payload than the standard-output version.
The engine name alone does not determine a truck’s capability. Cab style, bed length, two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, axle ratio, trim, wheels and tires, options, passengers, and cargo all affect the final rating.

*These are maximum published figures for selected configurations, not guaranteed ratings for every truck. Ram’s separate engine-performance page lists the HEMI at up to 9,590 pounds of towing and 1,630 pounds of payload, and the standard-output Hurricane at up to 11,370 pounds of towing. Those figures are not necessarily contradictory: the pages can represent different configurations and rating scopes. Always use the truck’s door-jamb payload label and the VIN-specific towing information before buying or towing.
What is the Hurricane engine?
In this comparison, Hurricane means Ram’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged gasoline inline-six. It is not a V6. The standard-output and high-output versions share the basic 3.0-liter inline-six architecture but have different calibrations and performance positioning.
The standard-output Hurricane produces 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque. That gives it a 25-horsepower and 59-lb-ft advantage over the HEMI’s 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft.
The high-output Hurricane raises output to 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft. That is a major performance increase, but it should not be interpreted as an automatic towing upgrade. The high-output engine is available in performance-oriented, more highly equipped applications whose published maximum ratings can be lower than those of the standard-output Hurricane.

Acceleration: the Hurricane engines are clearly quicker
Independent instrumented testing gives the Hurricane engines a substantial advantage in acceleration:
| Engine | Tested 0–60 mph |
|---|---|
| 5.7L HEMI V8 | 6.0 seconds |
| 3.0L Hurricane standard output | 4.8 seconds |
| 3.0L Hurricane high output | 4.2 seconds |
These are Car and Driver results from particular test vehicles, not universal factory specifications. A different cab, bed, drivetrain, axle ratio, wheel package, or payload can change the result. Even with that qualification, the direction of the comparison is clear: both Hurricane engines are quicker than the HEMI, and the high-output version is in a different performance class.
The standard-output Hurricane also reaches peak torque earlier than the HEMI in the independent comparison. Its 469 lb-ft gives the engine more reserve for merging, passing, and climbing with a trailer. Throttle calibration, transmission gearing, truck weight, and trailer load still matter, but the Hurricane’s numerical advantage should be noticeable in ordinary driving.
The HEMI’s eTorque mild-hybrid system can provide supplemental launch assistance. That assistance does not change the published peak engine figures: the HEMI remains rated at 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft, below the standard-output Hurricane’s official output.

Towing and payload: choose the standard-output Hurricane
Between the HEMI and the standard-output Hurricane, the Hurricane is the rational capability choice. Ram’s published 2026 capability guide lists up to 11,610 pounds of towing and 1,930 pounds of payload for selected standard-output Hurricane configurations, compared with up to 11,320 pounds of towing and 1,650 pounds of payload for selected HEMI configurations.
Ram’s engine-performance page shows different maximums—up to 11,370 pounds for the standard-output Hurricane and 9,590 pounds for the HEMI. The correct conclusion is not that one Ram source is automatically wrong. Maximum ratings are configuration-specific, and the publications may cover different body styles, drivetrains, axle ratios, trims, or equipment combinations.
The HEMI therefore does not provide a general towing advantage. Independent comparison testing reached the same broad conclusion: the V8’s main advantage was its sound, not a meaningful towing gain.
Why payload can matter more than the advertised tow rating
A truck can have enough maximum tow rating for a trailer and still run out of payload capacity once passengers, cargo, hitch equipment, and trailer tongue weight are included. That is why the payload number on the driver’s door-jamb label matters. It applies to that specific truck, not to every 2026 Ram 1500 with the same engine.
Before signing a purchase order, compare:
- The exact cab and bed configuration.
- 4×2 versus 4×4 drivetrain.
- Axle ratio and factory tow equipment.
- Wheel-and-tire package and other options.
- The door-jamb payload label on the actual truck.
- The VIN-specific Ram towing chart.
- The trailer’s loaded, not empty, weight and expected tongue weight.
Hitch equipment and a trailer brake controller can make a properly matched combination easier and safer to operate, but accessories do not increase the truck’s certified towing or payload rating. If you are shopping for 2026 Ram 1500 towing accessories, confirm the hitch class, wiring, brake-controller compatibility, trailer weight, and vehicle fitment before ordering.
Important fifth-wheel and gooseneck limitation
Ram says the 2026 Ram 1500 is not recommended for fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing. Buyers with those requirements should move up to a Ram 2500 or Ram 3500 rather than trying to make a half-ton configuration serve a heavier-duty role.
Fuel economy and fuel requirements
The standard-output Hurricane has the clearest fuel-economy advantage in the available evidence. Ram lists 17/24 mpg city/highway for 4×4 models with the standard-output engine and 15/20 mpg for 4×4 models with the high-output Hurricane.
Car and Driver reported 16/20 mpg city/highway, or 18 mpg combined, for its HEMI 4×4 test vehicle. Its standard-output Hurricane test vehicle was reported at 17/24 mpg city/highway, or 19 mpg combined. Those results suggest a real but not transformational efficiency advantage for the standard Hurricane. Configuration and driving conditions can narrow or widen the gap.

There is no single universal HEMI fuel-economy number for every 2026 Ram 1500. Treat the official label on the specific truck as the authoritative rating rather than applying one number to all cabs, beds, trims, and drivetrains.
Car and Driver’s high-output Hurricane coverage reported a requirement for 91-octane fuel. Verify the fuel recommendation in the owner’s manual and on the fuel information for the exact truck before publication or purchase. The high-output engine’s 15/20-mpg 4×4 estimate also reflects its performance bias: it is quicker, but it consumes more fuel than the standard-output Hurricane.
Driving character: the HEMI wins the emotional argument
The HEMI’s defining advantage is its sound. Car and Driver measured 81 decibels at wide-open throttle in its HEMI test truck and described the V8 as substantially louder than either Hurricane engine. MotorTrend likewise identified the V8 soundtrack as its principal advantage while ranking the Hurricane ahead for speed, towing, hauling, and fuel economy.
The twin-turbo inline-six is quieter and more subdued. That can be preferable on a long commute, during highway travel, or when passengers need to talk in the cabin. It also delivers its performance in a way that feels more forceful during acceleration.
The HEMI offers a familiar naturally aspirated V8 response and a more pronounced exhaust note. Those traits are not captured by horsepower, torque, or 0–60 numbers. If the sound and feel are the reason you want a Ram, choosing the HEMI is reasonable—even though it gives up objective performance and efficiency.
Owners who want to emphasize that part of the HEMI experience can investigate a 2026 Ram 1500 HEMI exhaust or a cat-back exhaust for the 2026 Ram 1500. Fitment must be checked by cab, bed length, drivetrain, trim, exhaust exit style, and factory exhaust configuration. An aftermarket exhaust may change sound, but it does not change the truck’s certified towing or payload rating.
Trim availability and price: the HEMI is usually a character surcharge
Ram’s official engine FAQ confirms the four-engine lineup but does not provide a complete engine-by-trim pricing table. Independent model-year pricing coverage reports the HEMI as an option on many lower and middle trims, including Tradesman, Express, Warlock, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Rebel, Limited, and Limited Longhorn.
That coverage reports that the HEMI is generally priced above the standard-output Hurricane on lower trims. Where the standard-output Hurricane is otherwise standard on Laramie and Rebel, the HEMI has been reported as costing approximately $1,200 more. On certain upper trims, the HEMI can be a no-cost alternative to the high-output Hurricane.

The value case is therefore straightforward on lower trims: the standard-output Hurricane typically gives you more power and torque for less money. The HEMI is a surcharge for V8 character. On upper trims, the choice is more nuanced: selecting the HEMI instead of the high-output Hurricane may save no money but can provide a different capability balance and a traditional V8 experience.
The HEMI is not offered on the RHO or Tungsten applications identified in current model-year coverage; those use the high-output Hurricane. Confirm availability for the exact trim and build location because Ram’s ordering mix can change.
Reliability and maintenance: what the evidence does—and does not—show
The HEMI has a longer history in Ram trucks, while the Hurricane is the newer engine family. That history may influence buyer confidence, but it does not establish a definitive reliability winner for the 2026 application. The HEMI’s return is a current-model configuration, and there is not enough long-term comparative evidence to responsibly promise that it will outlast either Hurricane.
The Hurricane’s twin-turbo design is mechanically more complex than a naturally aspirated V8, but complexity by itself is not proof of poor durability. Conversely, the HEMI’s established name is not proof that every 2026 truck will have fewer problems. Buyers should compare the warranty, maintenance schedule, service access, and their own tolerance for keeping a new powertrain long term rather than relying on reputation alone.
Ram’s owner handbook confirms that the 5.7L engine uses an engine air cleaner/filter. If routine maintenance is your concern, a 2026 Ram 1500 HEMI air filter should be purchased only after confirming the engine, model year, and VIN-specific fitment. The research does not establish one universal 2026 part number or one definitive listing for every HEMI configuration. The same caution applies to oil filters, spark plugs, fluids, and other service parts.
For exact replacements, use the VIN rather than a generic search. A resource that lets you find parts for a 2026 Ram 1500 by VIN is more responsible than assuming that every 5.7L HEMI truck uses the same cataloged component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where the high-output Hurricane fits
The high-output Hurricane is not merely a stronger version of the standard engine for every truck task. Its 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft make it the acceleration leader, with a tested 0–60-mph time of 4.2 seconds. It is the right choice for a buyer who values rapid acceleration and performance above all else.
Recommended Free Tools
Its published maximums are less favorable for truck work: up to 10,000 pounds of towing and 1,490 pounds of payload in Ram’s capability guide. Those figures reflect the trims and equipment in which the engine is offered. The standard-output Hurricane can tow and carry more in selected configurations while also returning better 4×4 economy estimates.
High-output Hurricane owners who want to personalize the truck’s sound can look at a 2026 Ram 1500 Hurricane exhaust, particularly for the RHO application. Treat that as a fitment-specific accessory decision, not as a reason to select the high-output engine for towing. Verify that the product is designed for the exact RHO, exhaust layout, trim, and model year.

Which 2026 Ram 1500 engine should you buy?
Choose the standard-output Hurricane if you:
- Tow frequently and want the strongest published capability numbers available in the comparison.
- Carry substantial payload in the bed or cab.
- Want quicker merging, passing, and uphill performance.
- Want the clearest fuel-economy advantage over the HEMI.
- Want the strongest numbers-per-dollar case on lower and middle trims.
- Prefer a quieter, less traditional powertrain character.
Choose the HEMI V8 if you:
- Care deeply about V8 sound and a traditional American truck experience.
- Prefer the feel of a naturally aspirated engine.
- Value brand history and emotional satisfaction more than maximum acceleration.
- Accept that the Hurricane generally offers more power, torque, towing capability, and efficiency on paper.
- Have found a specific upper-trim configuration where the HEMI is a no-cost alternative to the high-output Hurricane.
Choose the high-output Hurricane if you:
- Want the quickest 2026 Ram 1500 configuration.
- Prioritize 540 horsepower over fuel economy and payload.
- Are comfortable with its higher-trim availability and potentially higher fuel requirement.
- Do not need the standard-output Hurricane’s maximum published towing or payload figures.
Consider the Pentastar V6 if you:
- Want the lowest-cost powertrain configuration available to you.
- Use the truck for lighter-duty commuting, errands, and occasional hauling.
- Are comparing payload-oriented configurations rather than seeking strong acceleration or maximum towing.
A practical shopping checklist
- Choose the job before choosing the engine. Write down the loaded trailer weight, passengers, bed cargo, and expected tongue weight.
- Reject unsuitable body styles and equipment first. Compare cab, bed, drivetrain, axle ratio, wheels, tires, and factory tow equipment.
- Read the actual door-jamb payload label. Do not substitute a brochure maximum for the payload available on the truck you are buying.
- Check the VIN-specific towing chart. Use it to confirm the exact trailer limit for the selected truck.
- Confirm the fuel requirement. This is especially important for the high-output Hurricane.
- Compare the live build price. Option prices and incentives can change, and the HEMI’s value depends heavily on trim.
- Drive both powertrains if sound matters. A spreadsheet cannot reproduce the HEMI’s V8 soundtrack or the Hurricane’s quieter, stronger acceleration.
- Do not use reliability reputation as a verdict. The available evidence does not establish a definitive long-term winner for the 2026 engines.
Verdict: buy the Hurricane with your head, or the HEMI with your ears
The 2026 HEMI comeback is primarily an emotional victory, not a technical one. The standard-output Hurricane makes more power and torque, is quicker in independent testing, and carries higher published maximum towing and payload figures in selected configurations. It is also the more efficient and generally more compelling value.
The HEMI still earns its place because trucks are not purchased on specifications alone. Its naturally aspirated V8 feel and louder soundtrack matter to buyers who want the traditional Ram experience. If that character is worth the compromise, the HEMI is a legitimate choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2026 Ram 1500 HEMI better for towing than the Hurricane?
No—not generally. Ram’s 2026 capability guide lists up to 11,610 pounds of towing for selected standard-output Hurricane configurations versus up to 11,320 pounds for selected HEMI configurations. Exact ratings vary by cab, bed, drivetrain, axle ratio, trim, and equipment, so check the actual truck’s payload label and VIN-specific towing chart.
Why do Ram’s published towing numbers differ between pages?
Ram’s engine-performance page and separate towing-and-payload guide can represent different configurations or rating scopes. The HEMI is listed at up to 9,590 pounds on one page and 11,320 pounds in the capability guide; the standard-output Hurricane is listed at up to 11,370 and 11,610 pounds, respectively. These numbers should not be combined as though they describe the same truck.
Is the Hurricane a V6 engine?
No. The Hurricane is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged gasoline inline-six, also called an I-6 or straight-six. The 2026 Ram 1500’s separate V6 is the 3.6-liter Pentastar.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Which 2026 Ram 1500 engine is more reliable?
There is not enough long-term comparative evidence to identify a definitive reliability winner. The HEMI has a longer history, while the Hurricane is newer and twin-turbocharged, but neither reputation nor engine layout proves how the current 2026 applications will perform over many years.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The standard-output Hurricane is the best all-around 2026 Ram 1500 engine. The HEMI is worth choosing for its V8 sound and character, while the high-output Hurricane is for buyers who want maximum acceleration and can accept lower economy and truck utility.
