Use 2H for ordinary driving on dry, hard-surfaced roads. Select 4H when a part-time Wrangler is on loose or slippery ground, or use 4H Auto/full-time 4WD when your particular system provides it and conditions are changing. Reserve 4L for slow, difficult terrain that needs maximum gearing and control. Because Wrangler transfer cases and shift procedures vary by model year and equipment, confirm the system in your owner handbook before moving the selector.
What the Wrangler modes actually do
The transfer case changes how engine torque reaches the axles and, in low range, changes the gearing used at the wheels. The labels are similar across Wranglers, but the rules are not identical for every vehicle. The first question is whether your Wrangler has a part-time system, a full-time system, or both through a selector that includes 4H Auto.

On a part-time system, selecting 4H mechanically couples the front and rear drives. That is useful when the tires can slip slightly on a loose surface. On dry, high-grip pavement, the axles cannot easily rotate at different speeds in turns, so the coupled driveline can wind up. The result can be tire scrub, premature wear, difficult shifting and stress on transfer-case or driveline components.
A full-time system manages torque differently and is designed for continuous four-wheel-drive use across changing surfaces. A Wrangler equipped with 4H Auto is not governed by the same dry-pavement restriction as a part-time 4H setting. Not every Wrangler has 4H Auto, however; the mode must be present on your selector and identified in your handbook.

2H: the default for normal roads
When to choose 2H
2H is high-range, two-wheel drive. Jeep describes it as the setting for normal street and highway travel on hard, dry surfaces. Use it for commuting, ordinary city driving, dry motorways and other paved roads where extra wheel drive is not needed.
- Dry asphalt or concrete
- Routine highway and urban driving
- Firm, well-graded roads with no persistent wheel slip
- Any situation in which your part-time 4WD system would be locked on a high-grip surface
Why 2H is usually the efficient choice
With only the selected drive axle powered, 2H avoids unnecessary rotation of front driveline components and avoids the binding risk associated with a part-time 4H lock. It is not a statement that the Wrangler cannot handle rain or cold weather in 2H; it is the correct baseline whenever the surface is firm and the tires maintain normal grip. Slow down and change modes when the surface, rather than the forecast, creates a traction problem.
4H: distinguish part-time from 4H Auto
Part-time 4H
Part-time 4H sends drive to both axles with the front and rear drives coupled. Select it when you need additional traction on a surface that permits some tire slip, such as deep gravel, mud, sand, snow-covered roads, wet grass, rutted tracks or rocky approaches. The exact amount of slip varies by surface, but the important distinction is that the tires are not being forced to follow identical paths on a high-grip road.
Jeep’s off-road guidance warns that driving with 4H on typical paved roads can put unnecessary stress on the tires and drivetrain. In a part-time Wrangler, do not use 4H merely because rain is falling on otherwise normal, dry-grip pavement. If a road alternates between bare pavement and slippery sections, return to 2H when the surface is consistently firm, or use 4H Auto if your Wrangler is equipped with a full-time system and the handbook permits it.

4H Auto and full-time four-wheel drive
4H Auto is a distinct setting, not a different name for part-time 4H. On systems such as available Selec-Trac or Rock-Trac Full-Time, the vehicle can remain in a four-wheel-drive mode while the surface changes. This is the type of setting intended for drivers who encounter alternating dry pavement, rain, snow and loose shoulders without repeatedly stopping to select a locked part-time range.
Equipment varies by Wrangler trim, model year and transfer case. If your selector has only 2H, 4H and 4L, assume 4H is part-time until the handbook says otherwise. If it has 4H Auto, read the system description rather than inferring its behavior from the label alone.
4L: low range for demanding, slow travel
What low range changes
4L uses a reduction gear in the transfer case. The lower gearing multiplies torque at the wheels and gives the driver finer control at low speed. It is intended for rock crawling, steep or badly rutted climbs, controlled descents, deep obstacles and situations where maintaining momentum in a higher range would require too much throttle or clutch work.
Jeep lists a 2.72:1 low-range ratio for the Command-Trac system and a 4:1 ratio for the Rock-Trac system in its 2026 Wrangler information. These are transfer-case specifications, not promises of a particular hill-climbing result. The available ratio depends on the installed system.

When not to use 4L
4L is not a high-speed traction setting and is not a substitute for 4H on a snowy highway. The reduction gearing raises engine speed at a given road speed and is intended for controlled, low-speed operation. Staying in 4L after the obstacle ends can make the vehicle feel over-geared, complicate shifting and increase mechanical stress.
Choosing a mode by surface and task

How to shift from 2H to 4H
The shift range depends on the exact Wrangler, transmission and transfer case. Jeep’s 2026 FAQ says an automatic 2026 Wrangler should be slowed to under 55 mph before shifting from 2H to 4H. An official owner-handbook excerpt gives a preferred 0–45 mph range for certain 2H/4H shifts. Those figures are not interchangeable universal limits. Use the handbook for your vehicle and follow any selector-specific instructions displayed in it.
- Identify the setting. Confirm whether you are selecting part-time 4H or 4H Auto. Do not apply part-time guidance to a full-time setting or vice versa.
- Reduce speed to the limit in your handbook. Do not make the change while the driven wheels are spinning.
- Keep the vehicle pointed straight and maintain light, steady throttle. Sudden throttle changes can make engagement harder on a loose surface.
- Move the transfer-case selector firmly to 4H, or select 4H Auto on a system that provides it. Follow the instrument-panel confirmation procedure described for your model.
- Verify engagement before driving normally. A warning light that flashes, a selector that stops between positions or a drivetrain that remains in an unexpected range means the transfer case may not be fully engaged.
The handbook’s warning is direct: “Do not drive the vehicle unless the transfer case is fully engaged.” Incomplete engagement can cause component damage or loss of control. If the indicator does not confirm the requested position, stop safely and consult the model-specific instructions rather than continuing at road speed.

How to shift into and out of 4L
Low-range engagement requires a more deliberate procedure. In the cited Wrangler handbook procedure, the vehicle rolls at approximately 1–3 mph, the transmission is placed in Neutral and the transfer-case lever is moved firmly. The same handbook cautions against engaging or disengaging 4L above 1–3 mph. A stopped shift may be possible, but the handbook notes that it can be difficult when the gear teeth are not aligned.

- Bring the vehicle to a controlled crawl. Use the speed range and conditions specified for your model; the cited procedure uses 1–3 mph.
- Hold the vehicle straight and stop wheelspin. Front and rear driveshaft speeds must be equal for the shift.
- Place the main transmission in Neutral. An automatic transmission must be in Neutral for the cited procedure.
- Move the transfer-case lever or switch to 4L with a firm, positive motion, following your handbook’s exact path.
- Return the transmission to the appropriate drive range only after 4L is confirmed. Select first gear or a low automatic range as the terrain requires, and proceed at low speed.
- To leave 4L, reverse the same process. Slow to the handbook’s specified crawl, stop wheelspin, select Neutral, move the transfer case to the desired high-range position and verify the indicator before accelerating.
If the lever will not move, do not force it. A slight, controlled vehicle movement may help align the teeth, but the permitted technique is the one printed for your Wrangler. Never keep driving while the transfer case is between positions.

During a range change, the front and rear driveshaft speeds need to be compatible. Jeep’s handbook warns against shifting while only the front or rear wheels are spinning and says that ignoring this condition can damage the transfer case. Before a shift, lift off the throttle, regain control of the vehicle and allow the driveline to settle.
After selecting a mode, watch for the confirmation lamp and pay attention to the vehicle’s response. Clunks, binding in tight turns, a flashing indicator or a selector that will not stay in position are reasons to stop and check the handbook. Do not diagnose an incompletely engaged transfer case by driving faster to “make it click.”
A practical decision process on the trail or road
Dry pavement
Stay in 2H. If your Wrangler has a documented full-time 4H Auto setting, that mode may be used continuously according to the handbook, but locked part-time 4H is not the equivalent.

Snow, ice or slush
Choose based on the actual surface and your system. Part-time 4H is appropriate when the road is sufficiently slippery to allow tire slip; 4H Auto is intended for changing surfaces on equipped vehicles. Reduce speed regardless of the mode, because four-wheel drive helps acceleration and traction but does not eliminate braking distance.
Gravel, mud or sand
Part-time 4H can keep both axles driving when the surface is loose. Select 4L only when the terrain is slow and demanding enough to need low gearing. Avoid abrupt throttle inputs that dig the tires into a soft surface.
Rocks, ledges and steep technical sections
Use 4L when the obstacle requires low-speed control and torque multiplication. Pick a steady line, keep your speed low and use the gearing rather than excess throttle to maintain progress.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Leaving part-time 4H engaged on dry pavement: Return to 2H when the surface is firm and continuous. Tire scrub or binding in turns is a warning, not a normal operating characteristic.
- Assuming every Wrangler has the same 4H rule: Read the transfer-case description for your model year. 4H Auto/full-time and part-time 4H are different systems.
- Using 4L at road speed: Exit low range using the handbook procedure; 4L is for slow, difficult terrain.
- Shifting during wheelspin: Release the throttle, regain traction and equalize driveshaft speeds before attempting the change.
- Driving before engagement is confirmed: Stop if the indicator flashes or the selector is not fully seated. Jeep cautions that the transfer case must be fully engaged before driving.
- Treating a published speed as universal: The 2026 FAQ’s under-55-mph guidance and the cited handbook’s 0–45-mph guidance apply to their stated vehicles and procedures. Your owner handbook takes precedence.
What to check in your owner handbook
Before your first trail trip, locate the transfer-case section and confirm four details: the installed system name, whether 4H is part-time or 4H Auto, the allowed 2H/4H and 4L shift speeds, and the indicator-light behavior. Keep the handbook in the vehicle, because the correct procedure can differ between model years, transmissions and equipment packages.
If the transfer case repeatedly refuses to engage, remains between ranges, or shows a warning after you follow the stated procedure, avoid driving it as though the requested mode is active. Have the system inspected by a qualified technician familiar with the Wrangler’s transfer case.
